Nissan eyes Indian comeback with two new launches to rival segment leaders

Nissan is gearing up for a strong comeback in the Indian automotive market with plans to launch two all-new models by FY 2026. One of these will be an SUV that could very well be a rebadged version of the next-gen Renault Duster, while the other is a new MPV based on the Renault Triber.

The SUV: Ready to Rival the Segment Leaders

The upcoming Nissan SUV is designed to take on tough competition like the Hyundai Creta, Honda Elevate, Skoda Kushaq, and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. It will likely launch alongside Renault’s new SUV, as part of the continued Renault-Nissan alliance, ensuring shared platforms and faster go-to-market strategies.

Expected Powertrain:

According to online reports, the SUV will be petrol-only, featuring a 1.3-litre turbocharged engine producing 154 HP and 250 Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. There’s no official word yet on a manual option.

The MPV: Nissan’s Take on the Triber

In addition to the SUV, Nissan is also planning to introduce a compact MPV, expected to debut in December 2026. This new model will borrow heavily from the Renault Triber, known for offering three-row seating at an affordable price.

Engine & Transmission:

Like the Triber, the Nissan MPV will likely be powered by a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder engine making 72 HP and 96 Nm of torque, paired with a 5-speed manual or AMT gearbox. Both vehicles will be built at the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s joint manufacturing plant.

A Badge-Engineering Strategy

While Nissan hasn’t officially confirmed the SUV as a rebadged Duster, industry insiders believe it’s a strong possibility. With both models sharing platforms and features with Renault counterparts, Nissan is clearly betting on badge engineering to re-establish its footprint in India.
