2 min readDue to heavy rains in Tamil Nadu, schools and colleges were closed in many districts on Wednesday. The administration declared a holiday for educational institutions in nine districts including Villupuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Ramanathapuram and Trichy. Schools were also closed in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Ariyalur, Sivagangai and Pudukottai districts.

Semester examinations postponed
Madras University, Karaikudi-based Alagappa University, Bharathidhasan University and Directorate of Technical Education postponed all semester examinations to be held on Wednesday. New dates will be announced soon.
Cyclone and heavy rain warning
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rains in Tamil Nadu and adjoining areas due to a cyclone forming in the Bay of Bengal. On Wednesday morning, the deep pressure area formed in the southwest of the Bay of Bengal took the form of a cyclonic storm.
This cyclone is moving in a north-northwest direction and is likely to intensify further in the next 12 hours. Due to this, heavy to very heavy rains are expected in Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Karaikal, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu and surrounding areas of Tamil Nadu.
Main affected districts
- Heavy to very heavy rain likely: Chennai, Villupuram, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu.
- Extremely heavy rain likely: Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Karaikal areas.
- Other affected areas: Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Ariyalur, Pudukottai and Pondicherry.
The Meteorological Department has advised the local administration and citizens to remain alert. Officials have appealed to people not to travel unnecessarily and stay in safe places.
