BYD Launches e7 Electric Sedan, Offers Affordable Alternative to Tesla
Chinese automaker BYD has introduced its newest electric vehicle, the e7 sedan, a mid-size EV positioned to compete with the Tesla Model 3 in size but at a significantly lower price point.
The e7 is available in three variants, with prices starting at 103,800 yuan (approximately $14,500), making it nearly half the cost of the entry-level Tesla Model 3, which begins at 235,500 yuan ($32,700).
The BYD e7 measures 4,780mm in length, 1,900mm in width, and 1,515mm in height, with a 2,820mm wheelbase. Buyers can choose between two battery configurations: a 48kWh pack in the standard model and a larger 57.8kWh battery for extended range.
The smaller battery supports a CLTC-rated driving range of up to 450 kilometers, while the extended battery variant increases range to approximately 520 kilometers.
The e7 sedan features a front fascia characterized by BYD’s “Smiling and high-spirited” design language, full LED headlights, and a rear ducktail spoiler. The interior adopts a straightforward yet contemporary approach, highlighted by a 15.6-inch central touchscreen infotainment system and a 5-inch digital driver display.
Additional cabin amenities include BYD’s DiLink100 smart cockpit system, ergonomic cloud-sensing seats, an integrated gear controller, and a panoramic sunroof, enhancing driver and passenger comfort.
Initially launched as part of BYD’s budget-friendly e-series targeting younger customers and fleet operators, the e7 has now been repositioned under the Ocean series alongside models like the Dolphin and Seagull.
While the e7 offers a compelling price-to-feature ratio, it trails the Tesla Model 3 in range, with the latter’s rear-wheel-drive variant delivering a CLTC range of up to 634 kilometers.
