Mahindra Overtakes Hyundai as India’s No. 2 Car Seller in April

Mahindra & Mahindra has surpassed Hyundai Motor to become the second-highest seller in the Indian passenger vehicle segment in April 2025, as per retail data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

The reshuffling of rankings pushed Hyundai to fourth place, marking a significant change in the domestic automotive landscape. Mahindra’s market share climbed to 13.83% in April 2025, up from 11.23 per cent in April 2024. Hyundai, on the other hand, saw its share drop to 12.47 per cent from 14.29 per cent over the same period.

Despite the decline in numbers, Tata Motors held on to third position. Tata’s passenger vehicle retail sales fell to 44,065 units in April 2025 from 46,915 in April 2024. The company’s market share narrowed from 13.61 per cent to 12.59 per cent year-on-year.

Maruti Suzuki retained the top spot in the domestic passenger vehicle segment, but with a reduced market share. Sales dipped slightly to 1.38 lakh units in April 2025 compared to 1.39 lakh units in April 2024. The company’s overall share decreased from 40.39 per cent to 39.44 per cent.

Industry-wide, retail sales in April 2025 grew by 3 per cent year-on-year, totaling 22.8 lakh units. Growth was observed across all vehicle categories except commercial vehicles.

According to FADA President C S Vigneshwar, improved investor confidence due to easing of global economic tensions and seasonal festivals like Chaitra Navratri, Akshay Tritiya, Baisakhi, Vishu, and Bengali New Year contributed to the sales recovery.
