Trentar Energy Solutions to commercialize KPIT’s Sodium-Ion battery technology • EVreporter
KPIT Technologies, a company focused on mobility solutions, has partnered with Trentar Energy Solutions Pvt. Ltd., which operates in the electric mobility and energy storage sectors, to develop sodium-ion battery technology. Under this agreement, KPIT will transfer its sodium-ion battery technology to Trentar for commercialization.
Sodium-ion batteries retain 80% of their capacity for 3,000 to 6,000 cycles and charge faster than lithium-ion batteries. The technology relies on widely available raw materials, potentially lowering costs for electric mobility in India. It has applications in mobility (including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, and public transport), stationary energy storage (such as UPS backups and grid storage), and sectors like marine and defense.
Through this partnership, KPIT and Trentar will continue to develop sodium-ion-based battery technology. The agreement includes Trentar’s investment in a 3GWh manufacturing facility for sodium-ion batteries. KPIT will receive an upfront technology transfer fee and additional royalty payments over eight years.
In December 2023, KPIT Technologies introduced sodium-ion battery technology designed to reduce dependence on lithium. This technology offers a longer lifespan and faster charging times. Trentar Energy Solutions Pvt. Ltd. will handle its commercialization, utilizing its research, manufacturing, and distribution capabilities.
“Building sustainable mobility technologies is at the heart of KPITs vision. Sodium-ion battery technology was born from the team’s passion, perseverance, and synergetic collaboration with leading research institutes. We are pleased to have this agreement with Trentar, who will further operationalise and commercialise this technology for multiple market opportunities. KPIT will continue to work on several other sustainable technology solutions”, said Mr. Ravi Pandit, Chairman, KPIT Technologies.
“With its cost-effectiveness, simplified supply chain, and enhanced safety, Sodium-ion technology represents a strategic focus for our organization. We are committed to developing a robust technological product line in this space, catering to diverse customers across mobility and energy storage verticals. This marks a significant step towards a more sustainable and scalable energy for the future.” said Mr. Subodh Menon, Founder & Vice Chairman, Trentar.
