  • Honeywell Research: Industrial AI Insights

9 out of 10 companies in India are open to paying more to attract AI engineers

BENGALURU: Honeywell (Nasdaq: HON) today released the findings of its Industrial AI Insights global research study, which captures the state of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the sector. While only 17% of AI decision-makers around the world have fully implemented their initial AI plans, more than 9 in 10 say they are uncovering unexpected new use cases whether they are in the prototyping, launch, or scaling stages of AI implementation.

The research also finds they’re “sold” on AI for industrial applications. The enthusiasm for a deeper commitment to AI investment is nearly universal, with 94% of those surveyed saying they have plans to expand their utilization of AI.

“There is no question that AI is currently at a pivotal moment,” said Kevin Dehoff, Honeywell’s Chief Strategy Officer. “With the advent of Gen AI and more sources of data from advanced analytics, Industrial AI is poised to grow exponentially, and the possibilities are endless for revenue growth and employee satisfaction.”

    AI adoption in India

As per the research findings, 29%of the Indian companies have already fully launched their AI strategy, and 27%see data as their most important asset. In terms of the use cases offered by the advanced technologies, 79%see improved efficiency/productivity and data availability—to help decision-making—as the most promising use cases for AI. The report further highlights that almost 9 out of 10 (88%) Indian enterprises expect to pay more to attract the right talent pool of AI engineers.

    AI Unlocks Workplace Benefits

When asked for their thoughts on the impact of AI on industries, nearly two-thirds (64%) of AI leaders cited efficiency and productivity gains as the most promising benefits. Sixty percent say improved cybersecurity and threat detection result from AI and 59% report better decision-making due to real-time data generation.

Several other benefits of AI for workers were also cited by respondents, including:

    Increased work flexibility (49%)

    Greater job satisfaction (45%)

More time for skills development and creative thinking (44%)

    Increased workplace safety (39%)

Skills development is crucial in today’s economy with baby boomers retiring and fewer replacements entering the workforce. Through AI, employers can more quickly upskill and reskill workers. AI will transform industries as it enables workers to perform jobs at higher levels, providing greater job satisfaction while increasing productivity and addressing the skills shortage.

Lucian Boldea, President and CEO of Honeywell Industrial Automation, offered one direct example: “There can be tens of thousands of instruments, equipment, and valves needed to process and manufacture a product and many of the parts we supply manufacturers require highly experienced technicians for operation and maintenance — and there are fewer and fewer of those experienced technicians available. With AI training and AI as a “co-pilot” the skills of less experienced technicians can more quickly be upgraded, turning them into more elite experts that perform tasks based on enterprise knowledge and best practices. In turn, plant operations can run more safely and reliably by dramatically reducing human error.”

    What’s Next for AI

While the enthusiasm for AI to expand is palpable, there are still some challenges in the way of full adoption. More than a third of survey respondents (37%) feel that their C-Suite fully doesn’t understand how AI works and almost half (48%) say they have to continually justify, or request resources needed to implement AI plans.

“Businesses of all types recognize that AI is transforming our world and creating new possibilities. For building operations – such as hospitals, campuses, and offices – it is the future. As AI orchestrates controls that regulate HVAC, lighting, and electricity usage, it helps to improve safety, operational, and sustainability outcomes,” said Billal Hammoud, President and CEO of Honeywell Building Automation.

All of this suggests the pace of change will be driven by compelling use cases that can be measured in terms of improved business performance. As new solutions demonstrate clear benefits to workforce productivity, safety, and reliability, AI adoption will dramatically increase with the potential to transform industrial operations.

    Methodology

Honeywell commissioned Wakefield Research to survey AI leaders around the world. The online survey, which was conducted from April 22 through May 2, 2024, involved 1,600 executives in 12 global markets (US, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan Mexico, United Kingdom, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates.) Each respondent works at a company with at least 1,000 employees that is currently using AI to automate processes and tasks. All respondents are influencers or decision-makers related to the use of AI within their departments or across their organizations.

  • Eveready’s Siren Torch An Innovation Empowering Women’s Safety

A market disruptor, Eveready’s Siren Torch is a revolutionary product, that can emit a powerful 100dbA safety alarm while flashing, when its attached key chain is pulled, allowing the user in distress situations to alert passers-by and seek help

Eveready’s #AwaazUthaneyKaPower campaign, to promote the awareness of this new Siren Torch, is driven by deaf and verbally challenged women, aiming to empower women and people at large with enhanced safety and security tools, encouraging them to take charge of their safety.

MUMBAI:  Eveready Industries India Ltd (EIIL), India’s No.1 battery brand synonymous with power, performance, and reliability along with India’s First Woman IPS Officer, Dr. Kiran Bedi unveiled a first-of-its-kind flashlight with safety alarm – the Eveready Siren Torch. This market disruptor and pioneering siren flashlight emits a loud 100dbA safety alarm when the user pulls the attached key chain in a distressing situation. Designed to empower women and people at large, the newly launched siren flashlight aims to enhance safety and security in daily life. This innovative product is backed by the brand’s latest campaign, #AwaazUthaneyKaPower, which is led by deaf and verbally challenged people to highlight the need for this product to ensure safety and security for all.

For the #AwaazUthaneyKaPower campaign, Eveready collaborated with India Signing Hands, an organization dedicated to providing solutions to “accessibility” issues faced by the deaf community in India. To dispel the silence around women’s safety, the campaign connects with the deafening power of non-verbal communication through a powerful film crafted by Ogilvy India. The film features deaf and verbally challenged women, alone in different locations, narrating their traumatic experiences in sign language. They recount being very close to danger sometimes or being subjected to eve-teasing. Eveready Siren Torch empowers women to make noise even without a voice, with 100-decibel SOS alarms to prevent abuse and alert passersby. The film encourages others to stand up for themselves, feeling empowered by the message: “Ab awaaz main bhi uthaungi” – I will make my voice heard too.

Speaking on the occasion Dr. Kiran Bedi, Social Activist and first woman IPS officer said, “A woman’s physical and inner feeling of safety empowers her; it is essential for her mental health. Sometimes an external tool is needed to feel safe in all circumstances—whether moving out at odd hours or traveling distances to fulfill their dreams. Eveready’s unique Siren Torch is a significant step in empowering women to feel safe with an assurance to go that extra mile without hesitation or apprehensions about safety.”

“I am proud to support the #AwaazUthaneyKaPower campaign and look forward to extending this partnership with my NGOs, Navjyoti India Foundation and India Vision Foundation, to further our shared goal of women’s empowerment and create a safer society for all,” she added.

Anirban Banerjee, Senior Vice President & SBU Head (batteries & flashlights), Eveready Industries India Ltd. stated “Eveready is a tireless champion of infinite power. This spirit has inspired us to design Siren Torch – a transformative solution beyond mere functionality, offering hope and empowerment for women across India. With women’s safety at its core, our commitment to excellence and innovation has led to the creation of a game-changing device that empowers women to make noise even without a voice. It’s 100-decibel SOS alarms to prevent abuse and alert passersby. Affordable, compact, and feature-rich, we believe this product will significantly impact women’s lives. From the often deserted farmlands of rural India at night to the solitary late nights of Urban India, Siren will empower women to unlock their power of self-defense, build confidence, and shape a safer future for themselves and their communities”.

“Giving voice to the voiceless is not an easy task. But the path ahead was simple enough when Sujoy and his team came up with the idea of using non-verbal actors for the campaign. The involuntary silence of the actors on screen drives home the impossibility of the situation that women face daily. Through their mute gestures, the characters in the films speak for women who suffer shame, indignity, and crude violence without a word. Now everyone will get to make a noise, even if they don’t have a voice.”, remarked Sukesh Nayak, Chief Creative Officer, Ogilvy India.

The Eveready Siren Torch is more than just a product; it is a symbol of safety, empowerment, and the ability to raise one’s voice in critical moments. At 120 x 32 cm the Siren is a very compact and handbag-friendly torch. The product now in 3 modern colors, is equipped with USB TYPE-B charging, offering three versatile lighting modes that make it a multifunctional device for various scenarios. The product is a market disruptor as it is priced affordably at INR 225, making the Siren accessible and indispensable for women and people in vulnerable situations. Through the #AwaazUthaneyKaPower campaign and partnerships with inspiring figures and organizations, Eveready is committed to making a lasting impact on women’s safety and security.

  • Rising Cases Of Pulmonary Embolism Linked To International Travel

Doctors from Sahyadri Hospitals in Pune observe

PUNE: Over the last two years, Sahyadri Hospitals in Pune have observed a troubling trend: an increase in cases of pulmonary embolism (PE) associated with long-haul international travel. Recently, a 42-year-old patient was diagnosed with PE after presenting symptoms of chest discomfort and breathlessness, exacerbated by a history of recent international flights.

Dr. Kaurabhi Zade, Interventional Radiologist at Sahyadri Hospitals, Pune, emphasized the heightened risks associated with prolonged immobility during flights. “Flights longer than four hours can triple the risk of blood clotting, primarily due to cramped seating, dehydration, and lower cabin oxygen levels,” Dr. Zade explained. This insight comes after the successful treatment of 17 cases of PE through mechanical thrombectomy at the hospital—a procedure chosen for its efficacy when traditional clot-dissolving medications are unsuitable.

One of the recent research further underscores these observations. A study titled “Travel-Associated Venous Thromboembolism” highlights a mild to moderate association between VTE and the length of travel, with the risk increasing by 26% for every additional 2 hours of air travel starting after 4 hours. The study also noted the effectiveness of low-risk prophylactic measures like graduated compression stockings in preventing VTE, particularly during flights.

The patients, ranging from 21 to 72 years old, displayed varied health backgrounds, indicating that younger populations are increasingly at risk. “Pulmonary embolism is a high mortality condition, ranking as the third most common cause of cardiovascular death. Immediate treatment is crucial,” Dr. Zade added.

Dr. Kapil Borawake, the leader of the Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT) at Sahyadri Hospitals, Pune, highlighted preventive measures, especially with the holiday season in full swing. “As people increasingly embark on long air travels, it’s crucial to be mindful of dos and don’ts to prevent health risks such as pulmonary embolism. Simple actions like taking brisk walks every half-hour, staying hydrated, and avoiding alcohol, which can further dehydrate you, are essential,” Dr. Borawake advised.

Mechanical thrombectomy involves physically removing blood clots from the patient’s arteries, an approach that was necessary when clot burdens were high or when initial medical treatments failed. Despite the procedure’s challenges, such as managing complications from massive clots, the long-term outcomes have been promising, with significant survival benefits.

The public should be aware of the risks posed by extended periods of travel. This ongoing issue of travel-associated PE stresses the importance of vigilance and prompt medical intervention, reinforcing Sahyadri Hospitals’ commitment to leading-edge cardiovascular care.
