The government has taken several steps to enhance cyber security. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has notified the Telecom Cyber Security Rules. Under these, the central government can demand traffic data or any other type of data from any telecom company through any of its agencies.
This data can be any other data except the content of messages, which can be sought in a specific format. After this, the government can ask to establish the necessary infrastructure and equipment for the storage of such data, so that its processing and storage can be strengthened.
Cyber policy will have to be adopted
According to the rules, the government or the agency authorized to collect the data or the people with whom such data is shared will be responsible for storing it with confidentiality. To strengthen cyber security, telecom companies will have to adopt a cyber policy. This will include things like security-related risk management approach, action, training, network testing and risk assessment.
A security officer must be appointed
According to the rule, under this cyber policy, in view of security related incidents, providers will have to take such measures so that such incidents can be curbed. Under this, telecom companies will have to appoint a Chief Telecommunications Security Officer.
The whole process will be like this
In case of any security incident, it is necessary to report the incident to the central government with full details within six hours. Along with this, other important information has to be given in the details of the incident.
Within 24 hours of getting information about the security incident, companies will also have to provide information about the number of users affected by this incident, the location and the impact caused by it.
Registration of IMEI number will be necessary
Apart from this, registration of IMEI number will now be mandatory. Registration of International Mobile Equipment Identity Number (IMEI) of all phone devices manufactured or imported in India should be made mandatory. The government has mentioned this in the new rules so that fake devices and illegal activities can be stopped.
