Taking an important decision, the Government of India has suspended the exchange of all types of postal and parcel services coming from Pakistan with immediate effect. This decision will be applicable for both air and land routes.

India has taken many big decisions against Pakistan today, including a complete ban on all types of imports and a ban on the entry of Pakistani flagged ships to Indian ports. Now a public notice issued by the Department of Posts says, “The Government of India has decided to suspend the exchange of all categories of mail and parcels coming from Pakistan through air and land routes.”

History of postal services with Pakistan

The exchange of postal services between India and Pakistan had been going on at a limited level for a long time. However, after the removal of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019, Pakistan had suspended postal services for some time, which were later restored after three months. But now, the Indian government has decided to completely stop all postal and parcel services in view of the current tense situation.

What will be its effect?

This suspension will completely halt the exchange of correspondence, mail, and personal parcels between the two countries. Experts believe that this will have the greatest impact on those who depend on family or business correspondence between the two countries. Apart from this, this move can also affect Pakistan’s economy, as some of the goods imported from India were transported through postal services.

Ban on import from Pakistan with immediate effect

Earlier today, India has banned all direct or indirect imports of goods from Pakistan with immediate effect in the interest of national security and public policy. This information was given in a government order. This decision will completely stop all imports of goods from Pakistan to India. India’s exports to Pakistan from April last year to January this year were $ 44.76 crore, while imports were only $ 4.2 lakh.

In a notification dated May 2, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said that “In this regard, a provision has been added in the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023, under which all direct or indirect import or transit of goods originating in or exported from Pakistan will be prohibited with immediate effect till further orders.”

It said the ban was imposed in the interest of national security and public policy. The order said any exception to the ban would require the approval of the Indian government. Inserting a provision under the heading ‘Ban on Imports from Pakistan’ in the FTP, it said, “The direct or indirect import or transit of all goods imported or exported from Pakistan, whether freely importable or otherwise permitted, shall remain prohibited with immediate effect until further orders.”

The main imports from the neighbouring country during April-January 2024-25 included fruits and nuts ($ 80 thousand), some oilseeds and medicinal plants ($ 2.6 lakh) and organic chemicals. This decision has been taken after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, in which 26 people were killed.

Pakistan flagged ships barred from entering the port

India on Saturday officially announced its decision to ban Pakistan-flagged ships from entering any port in India. The ban has come into effect immediately. According to an official directive issued by the government on Saturday, any ship with a Pakistan flag has been barred from visiting Indian ports, while Indian-flagged ships have also been barred from docking at Pakistan ports.

Citing national security concerns, the government said the order was implemented ‘in the public interest and to ensure the safety of Indian assets, cargo and related infrastructure in the interest of Indian shipping.’ The directive has come into effect immediately and will remain in force until further notice.

India’s swift action on Pakistan

Following the terror attack, India took a number of steps, including the immediate closure of the Attari border crossing, which is used for the movement of certain goods. In addition, India has announced the expulsion of the Pakistani military attache and the suspension of the 1960 Indus Water Treaty.

Due to this, trade between India and Pakistan has already come to a complete standstill. Two-way trade between the two countries had become negligible following the steps taken by both sides after the Pulwama terror attack in 2019. In retaliation, Pakistan has also announced the suspension of all trade with India, including trade with any third country through Pakistan. Exports in the financial year 2023-24 were $ 1.18 billion and imports were $ 28.8 million. Earlier in 2022-23 and 2021-22, India exported goods worth $ 627.1 million and $ 513.8 million respectively and imported products worth $ 20.1 million and $ 25.4 million.
