The Income Tax Department wrote on the social media platform X that the Excel facility for ITR-1 and ITR-4 for the assessment year 2025-26 is available to taxpayers.

The Income Tax Department on Friday said it has made available Excel tools for ITR -1 and ITR-4 for the assessment year 2025-26, allowing taxpayers to file their income tax returns. The Income Tax Department wrote on the social media platform X-Excel facility for ITR-1 and ITR-4 for the assessment year 2025-26 is available to taxpayers. With the availability of these facilities, taxpayers can start filing their ITR for income earned in 2024-25.

Deadline is 15 September

Let us tell you that this year the last date for filing income tax returns in ITR-1 and ITR-4 has been extended from July 31 to September 15. Recently, CBDT had issued a statement saying that in order to make the document filing experience smooth and convenient for the taxpayers, it has been decided that the last date for filing ITR which was originally 31st July has been extended to 15th September 2025.

Which form for whom?

Apart from ITR-1, ITR-4 form is filled by individuals, HQFs and institutions whose annual income is up to Rs 50 lakh and who do not have to get their accounts audited. Those who have long-term capital gains up to Rs 1.25 lakh from listed shares can show this income in ITR-1 and ITR-4. Earlier they had to fill ITR-2 form also.

When were the forms notified

This year, the ITR forms for assessment year 2025-26 were notified in late April and early May. Usually, ITR forms are notified around February/March before the end of the financial year. However, this time the facility to file ITR forms and documents was delayed as revenue department officials were busy with the new Income Tax Bill which was introduced in Parliament in February.
