Netflix Starts Using GenAI To Speed Up Movie Production And Launch New Features

Companies developing AI video technology often explore partnerships with film studios to enhance production workflows. Netflix confirmed this trend on Thursday by revealing its integration of generative AI into its original films and television series.

Co-CEO Ted Sarandos shared during a post-earnings conference call that the platform featured “the inaugural use of generative AI in final footage” in the Argentine series “El Atonata.” Netflix’s internal production team reportedly worked with filmmakers to recreate a building collapse sequence using AI tools.

Sarandos emphasized that the AI-assisted scene was completed ten times faster and at a significantly lower cost compared to traditional visual effects methods.

“We strongly believe AI offers creators transformative opportunities to elevate storytelling, not merely reduce expenses,” Sarandos stated. “These are advanced tools empowering real artists—our teams already benefit from AI in pre-visualization, scene planning, and visual effects. Previously, sophisticated techniques like digital de-aging were limited to high-budget productions.”

Co-CEO Greg Peters added that Netflix is expanding generative AI applications beyond production, including search optimization, content recommendations, and advertising innovation. Interactive advertising features are slated for launch later this year following the company’s recent introduction of AI-enhanced search capabilities.

The streaming giant reported $11.08 billion in Q2 revenue, marking a 16% year-over-year increase, with profits reaching $3.13 billion. Viewership data highlighted over 95 billion hours of content consumed during the first half of the year, with non-English titles representing one-third of total viewing activity.
