The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued new rules for undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) degree courses starting in the year 2025. This change has been made under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Its aim is to make the urge to learn flexible. Along with this, it should be better for all students. At the same time, the policies regarding the credit system have also been clarified by the UGC. So that there is no confusion among the students.

UGC has made the biggest change in the multiple entry and exit system. This means that students can leave the course after one, two, three or four years. Even after this, they can get a certificate, diploma or degree. Students will get a certificate, diploma or degree based on how many credits they have completed. After this, students can resume their studies from where they left off. This will give students more freedom and new opportunities in studies.

How to get degree and diploma

1 – After one year (40 credits) students will get a certificate.

2 – After two years (80 credits) students will receive a diploma.

3 – After three years (120 credits) they will get a normal degree.

4 – After four years (160 credits) they will get a degree with Honours or Honours with Research.

This will also benefit those students who are forced to leave their studies midway due to some reason.

Admission will be done twice a year

Another big change is that now skill based education will also be included along with studies. Students will have to take 50 percent credits from their main course. They can get the remaining credits from skill development courses, internships or multidisciplinary subjects. Apart from this, now admission opportunity will be available twice a year, i.e. in July/August and January/February. Due to which students will get more opportunities to start studies.

Major changes in the credit system

UGC has made major changes in the credit system to make studies easier. Now students will be given some credits for studying each subject. All these credits will be saved in a digital platform Academic Bank of Credits (ABC). Students can deposit their credits in any college or university in India. Apart from this, they can also transfer them or use them for studies. Students will now also get the facility that they can do two different UG or PG courses simultaneously. Whether they are from different colleges or in different formats (like offline, online or distance learning).
