On Sunday, Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), the primary city‑gas provider, raised CNG rates by one rupee per kilogram throughout the Delhi‑NCR area. This marks the second increase in two days, taking Delhi’s CNG price above the Rs 80 per kilogram threshold for the first time.

After the adjustment, CNG is priced at Rs 80.09 per kilogram in Delhi, whereas in Noida and Ghaziabad it is Rs 88.70 per kilogram. This follows a prior increase of Rs 2 per kilogram announced by IGL on May 15, resulting in a cumulative rise of Rs 3 per kilogram over the last 48 hours.

The successive CNG price hikes are likely to raise travel expenses for private car owners, auto‑rickshaw drivers, taxi operators and commuters who rely on this cleaner fuel.

The update follows a wider fuel price increase announced by the central government on May 15, which lifted petrol and diesel rates by roughly Rs 3 per litre in Delhi. Currently, petrol sells for Rs 97.77 per litre and diesel for Rs 90.67 per litre in the capital.

The price increase is being attributed to rising tensions in West Asia and ongoing disruptions caused by blockades near the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial conduit for about 20 % of global oil and gas flows. This geopolitical instability has driven international crude prices up sharply, with Brent crude reportedly surpassing the $100‑per‑barrel level.

Addressing concerns about higher fuel costs, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju noted that India has kept petrol and diesel price increases modest despite a steep rise in global crude oil prices. He pointed out that while many nations saw fuel costs climb between 20 % and almost 100 %, India’s petrol and diesel prices have risen only 3.2 % and 3.4 % respectively.

Rijiju added that state‑run oil marketing firms absorbed significant losses over several weeks to shield consumers from a larger inflationary effect during turbulent global energy markets.
