New Delhi, Feb 8: The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has outlined a strategic proposal to establish a pilot air corridor connecting Gurugram, Connaught Place, and Jewar International Airport. This initiative aims to alleviate urban congestion and significantly reduce travel times across the National Capital Region.

Released by Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, the CII report titled ‘Navigating the Future of Advanced Air Mobility in India’ highlights how electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft technology could contribute to India’s Net-Zero 2070 objectives through zero-emission transportation solutions.

The report recommends establishing a specialized Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) regulatory body within the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. This dedicated unit would focus on developing safety protocols, operational standards, and certification processes tailored to next-generation aviation technologies, particularly those operating in urban low-altitude environments.

Through a phased implementation strategy, the proposal seeks to methodically integrate air taxis and other emerging mobility solutions into India’s aviation infrastructure. The roadmap addresses critical aspects including airworthiness certification, urban flight management systems, and vertiport development standards.

Urban planning integration forms a cornerstone of the recommendations. The report advocates for collaboration between aviation regulators and municipal authorities to incorporate vertiport locations into city master plans, ensuring seamless connectivity with existing transit networks while addressing power infrastructure requirements for electric aircraft charging.

The analysis identifies rooftop infrastructure as a practical solution for vertiport development in high-density cities. While current aviation regulations restrict commercial rooftop take-offs and landings, the report suggests leveraging existing structures could provide cost-effective alternatives compared to ground-based developments that require extensive land acquisition.

Commercial hubs, technology parks, and medical complexes emerge as prime candidates for rooftop vertiports due to their strategic locations and connectivity needs. Such installations could dramatically improve transportation efficiency but would require comprehensive regulatory updates and safety frameworks before implementation.

Financial innovation plays a vital role in the proposal, with recommendations for government-backed funding mechanisms through institutions like SIDBI. The plan suggests establishing specialized financing instruments, including venture leasing options and credit enhancement facilities, to catalyze private investment in next-generation aviation infrastructure.

The report emphasizes beginning implementation with cargo-focused drone operations to build operational experience before expanding to passenger services. Priority logistics corridors between 50-100 km could demonstrate the viability of urban air mobility solutions while delivering tangible benefits in medical supply transportation and e-commerce deliveries.

By focusing on the Delhi NCR region as an initial implementation zone, the report provides a framework for gradual expansion across other major urban centers. It serves as a comprehensive reference for policymakers, investors, and industry stakeholders seeking to develop sustainable three-dimensional mobility solutions in India’s rapidly growing cities.
