Sindhudurg Sees Swift Action Against Illegal Cockfighting: Following a tip about an illicit cockfighting event in Kudal, Sindhudurg district, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India (PETA India) sprang into action. Collaborating closely with the Sindhudurg Police, their timely intervention successfully prevented the event from taking place.
The Kudal police not only ensured the cancellation of the event but also registered a first information report (FIR) against eight individuals under Section 12(c) of the Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act, 1887, and Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, for their involvement in the illicit activity.
According to PETA India Lead Cruelty Response Coordinator Saloni Sakaria, “Cockfighting is inherently cruel, and the prevention of this event highlights the importance of public vigilance in protecting animals.” PETA India commends the Sindhudurg police, particularly Dr. Mohan Dahikar IPS, Superintendent of Police, Sindhudurg, for sending a strong message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated.
The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 explicitly prohibits inciting animals to fight each other. A landmark judgment in 2014 by the Supreme Court of India, in favor of PETA India and the Animal Welfare Board of India, ruled that bullfighting, dogfighting, and other staged animal fights for entertainment must be banned.
Roosters used in cockfights are subjected to immense suffering, including punctured lungs, broken bones, and pierced eyes. Their legs are often fitted with razor-sharp steel blades, which can be deadly not only for the birds but also for the fighters and spectators. Illegal cockfighting events are often associated with gambling and liquor consumption, posing a threat to public health and safety.
