  • Google fires 50 workers amid protests over Israeli cloud deal

    NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

APRIL 24, 2024: In the midst of escalating tensions surrounding Google’s cloud-computing contract with the Israeli government, the tech giant has terminated an additional 20 employees, bringing the total number of dismissals to 50, reports CNN. The protests, organized by No Tech for Apartheid, erupted following Google’s controversial business dealings with Israel.

The organizers of the demonstrations disclosed on Monday that Google had axed another 20 workers, on top of the 30 previously let go. No Tech for Apartheid criticized the mass firings, alleging that some of the terminated employees were merely bystanders during the protests and not actively engaged in the activism within Google’s offices in New York and Sunnyvale, California.

Google, in response, declined to specify the exact number of dismissals related to the protests but acknowledged the additional terminations. According to a Google spokesperson, the company conducted an investigation into the disruptions that occurred on April 16 and terminated the employment of individuals directly involved in the disruptive activity.

Despite Google’s assertion that only those directly involved were fired, the organizers of the protests contested this claim, asserting that some of the terminated employees had not caused any disruption within the offices.

“No Tech for Apartheid” condemned Google’s actions as “an aggressive and desperate act of retaliation” and vowed to persist in their workplace activism. They accused Google of reacting harshly due to embarrassment over the strength displayed by workers during the sit-ins and criticized the company’s handling of the protests.

The protests stem from Google’s cloud-computing contract with the Israeli government, amidst ongoing tensions following an attack by Hamas militants that resulted in significant casualties in Israel. The subsequent Israeli counteroffensive in Gaza has further fueled the controversy, with a considerable number of civilian casualties reported.

CEO Sundar Pichai’s recent memo to Google staff urging them to keep “politics” out of the workplace has done little to quell the unrest. Despite Pichai’s plea for employees to refrain from disruptive behavior or political debates, the tensions surrounding Google’s business decisions and their broader societal implications persist.

  • Sanjay Mehrotra led Micron awarded $13.6 billion US grant

Washington, April 26 (IANS) The US government has announced a plan to award Micron Technology up to $6.14 billion in grants and $7.5 billion in loans to support the US chipmaker’s plan to build new factories, as it strives to bolster domestic semiconductor production.

Micron last year started construction of its India semiconductor plant in Sanand, Gujarat. The first ‘Make in India’ chip is all set to arrive in December from the Rs 22,500 crore Micron semiconductor plant.

The White House said that the Commerce Department has reached a non-binding preliminary agreement with the company to provide the proposed funding under the CHIPS and Science Act to back the construction of two leading-edge dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) fabrication plants in Clay, New York, and the development of a high-volume manufacturing fab in Boise, Idaho.

Micron plans to invest up to $125 billion across both states over the next two decades to build a “leading-edge memory manufacturing ecosystem,” it added, noting the company’s total investment will create over 70,000 jobs, including 20,000 direct construction and manufacturing jobs.

“With this proposed investment, we are working to deliver on one of the core objectives of President Biden’s CHIPS program — onshoring the development and production of the most advanced memory semiconductor technology, which is crucial for safeguarding our leadership on artificial intelligence and protecting our economic and national security,” Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said.

The announcement came after the department unveiled a plan last Monday to award Samsung Electronics up to $6.4 billion in grants to support the South Korean tech giant’s chip-making investment in central Texas, reports Yonhap news agency.

In addition to Micron and Samsung, Intel, TSMC Arizona Corporation, GlobalFoundries, the American subsidiary of BAE Systems Plc, and Microchip Technology Inc. have also been selected as subsidy beneficiaries.

The CHIPS Act sets aside $39 billion in incentives to encourage chipmakers to build, expand or modernise semiconductor facilities in the US.

The Commerce Department plans to invest about $28 billion of the total in leading-edge chipmakers, like Samsung.

The Biden administration pushes to deliver on its plan to produce about 20 per cent of the world’s leading-edge logic chips by 2030.

  • West India’s Productivity Is Getting Impacted The Most Due To Disturbed Sleep Caused By Mosquitoes As Per A Study By Goodknight

    GoodKnight
    Study

56% of people in the Western region feel mosquitoes are one of the main reasons they are not able to sleep well

On a national level, more than half of India’s productivity is getting impacted due to disturbed sleep caused by mosquitoes

PUNE:  More than half (58%) of India’s productivity is getting impacted as people feel stressed/drained out because of disturbed sleep due to mosquitoes. As a prelude to the upcoming World Malaria Day (April 25), this crucial revelation emerged from a survey report unveiled by Goodknight, India’s leading household insecticide brand from Godrej Consumer Products Ltd (GCPL). Titled ‘One Mosquito, Countless Threats’, this pan-India survey commissioned by Goodknight, and conducted by market research firm YouGov, examines public attitudes, and assesses the risks of mosquito-borne diseases. The survey report involved respondents across four regions of India – North (including central zone states), South, West and East.

The Goodknight report highlights that 62% of males and 53% females expressed that their productivity is getting impacted because of disturbed sleep due to mosquitoes. This is particularly concerning in the context of India’s recent economic surge, where a healthy workforce is paramount. As per industry reports, the economic burden of India from mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria alone is around INR. 16000 crores. As per various estimates, approximately 75% of the economic burden represents the loss of earnings by Indians and the balance towards treatment expenses.

Geographic zone wise, the West region consisting of states like Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan, seemed the most affected with 67% people in the region feeling their productivity is getting impacted due to disturbed sleep caused by mosquitoes. Southern India comes in at the second spot with 57% people followed by Northern India at 56% and East region at 49%.

Ashwin Moorthy, Chief Marketing Officer – India, Godrej Consumer Products Limited (GCPL), says, “Goodknight’s ‘ONE MOSQUITO, COUNTLESS THREATS’ is a nationwide survey report that delves into public attitudes and evaluates the risks associated with mosquito-borne diseases. By such initiatives, our goal is to heighten awareness regarding the mosquito problem in India, enable families to act, and offer affordable yet innovative solutions to the country. In India, more than 40 million citizens are affected by mosquito-borne diseases like malaria, dengue, annually. Absenteeism from work, school, social and professional commitments due to illness, healthcare expenses, and reduced productivity, all contribute to economic losses. To maintain the productivity of the Indian economy and keep the GDP score ticking, what is needed on the ground is a steady and healthy workforce. One of the pragmatic ways of addressing this will be to resolve the rising trend of mosquito-borne diseases.”

Another noteworthy insight from the Goodnight survey is that mosquitoes significantly contribute to people’s inability to sleep well.  Across India, on average, one out of every two adults (50%) identified mosquitoes as amongst the main reason for their sleep disturbances. Interestingly, West India (56%) agree with this statement the most followed by North (52%), South (47%) and East (42%). Furthermore, men (54%) are more inclined to agree with this sentiment compared to women (46%).

Commenting on the insights from the Goodknight report, Dr. Kirti Sabnis, Infectious Disease Specialist, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, Mumbai, said, “It is critical to understand that a single mosquito possesses the potential to transmit life-threatening diseases. These diminutive, buzzing insects are the silent culprits behind the insidious spread of ailments such as dengue, malaria, and a host of other conditions. They can debilitate the immune system, rendering individuals vulnerable to other illnesses. This persistent threat not only compromises our health but also hampers our ability to lead healthy and productive lives. Safeguarding against mosquito-borne diseases transcends personal responsibility; it is a collective duty we owe to ourselves and our communities.”

Goodknight is actively engaged in raising public awareness about the dangers posed by mosquitoes and contributing to the national fight against these harmful insects. It has a long history of providing innovative mosquito repellent solutions like the Flash vapouriser and the Advanced Fast Card, protecting families from mosquito-borne diseases. Recognizing the recent health risks of illegal, unregulated, and Chinese chemical-laced mosquito repellent incense sticks, Goodknight recently launched India’s first government-approved, anti-mosquito incense stick, the Goodknight Agarbatti. This innovative product offers consumers a safe alternative to chemical-laden Chinese imports. The launch serves as a call to action, urging stakeholders to collaborate in the ongoing battle against mosquitoes and ensure a healthier future for India.

  • Vesavar Art Gallery Celebrates One Year Milestone with Prabhakar kolte’s ‘Saga’

    Vesavar Art Gallery

Known for his mastery in the realms of poetic and metaphysical abstractionism, Prabhakar Kolte brings his distinguished artworks to Vesavar Art Gallery for public view from April 5 to June 9

PUNE: The city’s favorite art hub, Vesavar Art Gallery, marked its inaugural year of creative brilliance with great enthusiasm. The gallery, in collaboration with Treasure Art Gallery from Delhi as co-curator, proudly unveiled ‘Saga’ – a captivating exhibition by one of the greatest abstract painters in India, Prabhakar Kolte.

Known for his mastery in the realms of poetic and metaphysical abstractionism, Prabhakar Kolte, aged 78, brought his distinguished artworks to Vesavar Art Gallery for the first time. His journey from humble beginnings as a freelance illustrator to a renowned artist was nothing short of remarkable. Kolte’s artistic journey was deeply intertwined with meditation, drawing inspiration from the spiritual teachings of Marathi Sant Dnyaneshwar’s Bhagavad Gita commentary.

His paintings embody a vibrant artistic life, pulsating with the essence of existence itself. They resonate with life’s solemn tones and luminosity, captivating the viewer’s inner being through visual engagement. Kolte’s paintings reflect his desire to infuse specific energies into his art. Whether dark, light, or bright, his works demonstrate a shift towards a richer chromatic palette, departing from the stark, pale, monochromatic grounds of his earlier years.

Expressing his happiness to showcase his work after almost two decades, Prabhakar Kolte shared, “My artistic voyage commenced with simple black and white sketches, gradually evolving to embrace a spectrum of colors. Initially, I relied on rudimentary canvas tools. With three decades in the industry, my art revolves solely around expression; the idea is never preconceived before it meets the canvas.

I’m very happy to be back in this city after so long. And feel grateful to the founders of the gallery who have created such a beautiful space for art lovers.”

The prestigious exhibition was inaugurated by Sabina Sanghvi, the multifaceted entrepreneur and media personality, who has championed many social causes. “Team Vesavar’s unwavering belief in art, the city, and the artists is truly commendable. I’m delighted to inaugurate this exhibition and I’m committed to promoting young artists, musicians, and dancers from Pune as it is known as the cultural capital. Prabhakar Sir’s paintings are truly remarkable, and I anticipate enjoying them for years to come. The art of this stature cannot be consumed and understood in just one visit. It’s powerful and requires multiple viewings to fully appreciate. Kudos to the team,” Sanghvi expressed.

The founder of Vesavar, Kavita Bhandari said, “On this remarkable occasion of our one-year anniversary, we’re thrilled to announce that Vesavar Art Gallery has completed 10 exhibitions. It’s been an incredible journey for us, filled with growth and achievement.”
