₹2,000 notes worth ₹5,817 crore still in circulation: RBI

₹2,000 denomination notes worth ₹5,817 crore remain in circulation according to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data issued on Saturday.

The RBI initially announced the withdrawal of these high-value banknotes from circulation on May 19, 2023. Despite this step, ₹2,000 notes continue to retain their status as legal tender.

Central bank records show the total value of ₹2,000 notes in circulation stood at ₹3.56 lakh crore when the withdrawal was announced. This figure has progressively reduced to ₹5,817 crore as of October 31, 2025.

“Approximately 98.37% of the ₹2,000 banknotes circulated as of May 19, 2023, have now been returned to the banking system,” the RBI confirmed.

Since the announcement date, the RBI’s 19 designated issue offices have facilitated currency exchange services. Starting October 9, 2023, these offices also began accepting ₹2,000 notes for direct deposit into individual and entity bank accounts.

Additionally, the public can utilize India Post services to send ₹2,000 banknotes from any post office nationwide to RBI issue offices for account credit purposes.

The RBI’s exchange facilities operate from these locations: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram.

The central bank maintains regular updates regarding the withdrawal progress of ₹2,000 banknotes.
