HSBC India, Vrutti partners to launch FPO Shakti financing facility

2 min read

Vrutti, a member of the Catalyst Platform, has introduced FPO Shakti—a blended stage-based financing initiative designed to connect Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) with timely and targeted funding solutions.

The program, backed by HSBC India and implemented by Friends of Women’s World Banking (FWWB) India, addresses systemic credit barriers that hinder FPOs from scaling beyond initial developmental stages.

Despite over 44,000 registered FPOs across India, less than 30% qualify for formal credit. Restrictive collateral requirements and rigid lending criteria often trap organizations in a “missing middle” phase, limiting rural economic growth and keeping smallholder incomes stagnant.

FPO Shakti bridges this gap through an integrated funding model that unites financiers, impact investors, agricultural buyers, and capacity-building experts. The facility will initially support 15 emerging FPOs before expanding to 100+ organizations.

Its methodology merges flexible financial instruments—including revolving funds, borrower guarantees, and revenue-based financing—with digital accounting tools and customized mentorship. Participating FPOs will undergo a 24-month transformation program to enhance governance, financial management, and commercial partnerships, preparing them for long-term market integration.

Aloka Majumdar, MD and Head of Sustainability at HSBC India, emphasized: “FPOs drive rural prosperity yet remain underserved by traditional finance. This facility combines capacity-building with catalytic funding to convert high-potential organizations into bankable enterprises capable of sustaining market relationships.”

Raghini Badhrinarayanan, CEO of Vrutti, added: “FPO Shakti transitions from temporary subsidies to enduring institutional support. By balancing commercial discipline with farmer-centric values, we’re enabling FPOs to operate as viable businesses without compromising their community roots.”
