SMFG India Credit’s digital business hits 25% of total portfolio

2 min read

SMFG India Credit’s digital business now comprises nearly 25% of its total operations, representing approximately ₹15,000 crore in assets under management as of September 2025.

The non-banking financial company revealed this achievement on Wednesday while detailing its accelerated technology transformation strategy.

This digital segment has expanded at a 45% compound annual growth rate over the past two years, fueled mainly through collaborations with fintech firms serving small merchants, gig workers, and self-employed borrowers.

The institution has earmarked nearly ₹400 crore for technological upgrades during FY25-26 to facilitate this growth trajectory.

Initiatives include implementing machine learning systems for instant credit assessments, adaptive risk profiling, and fraud prevention. Digital infrastructure enhancements feature CKYC compliance, Digilocker verification protocols, e-sign functionality, and biometric authentication with safeguards against deepfake manipulation – all enabling accelerated loan approvals and fully digital onboarding.

Operating Chief Swaminathan Subramanian noted that this expansion demonstrates the effectiveness of automated decision systems and API-powered partner ecosystems in expediting fund disbursements. The technological upgrades aim to enhance operational efficiency while enabling innovative product development across retail, small business, affordable housing, and digital lending verticals.

As the Indian subsidiary of Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, SMFG India Credit maintains 989 branches nationwide supported by more than 22,000 staff members. The organization caters to underbanked retail customers and small enterprises through diversified loan offerings.
