Blackstone ties up with Nippon Life on private credit investment
2 min readBlackstone Inc. has signed a deal to deliver investment services to Nippon Life Insurance Co., joining a growing wave of collaborations between private‑equity firms and Japanese insurers.
Under the memorandum of understanding, Japan’s biggest life insurer will commit up to ¥1.5 trillion (about $9.4 billion) over the next five years to private‑credit and credit‑related products managed by Blackstone, the statement released on Wednesday said. Blackstone may also oversee as many as a dozen of Nippon Life’s major urban real‑estate holdings through its real‑estate division.
Leading global investment houses are increasingly targeting Japan’s massive insurance sector to grow their asset bases. Companies such as Apollo Global Management Inc.’s Athene Holding Ltd. have struck reinsurance agreements with life insurers, while firms like Blackstone have pursued third‑party asset‑management arrangements.
Japanese insurers face pressure to broaden their investment portfolios and lift returns as rising inflation reshapes the market environment. In July of last year, KKR & Co.’s insurer Global Atlantic Financial Group secured $2 billion from Japan Post Insurance Co. to fund its operations.
