Kotak Mahindra Bank announced a higher‑than‑expected rise in its fourth‑quarter profit on Saturday, driven by robust loan growth and reduced provisions for possible bad loans.

The country’s third‑biggest private bank saw its standalone net profit climb 13% to ₹4,027 crore for the quarter ending March 31, up from the same period a year earlier. Analysts, per LSEG data, had forecast a profit of ₹3,737 crore.

Loan demand in India picked up during the second half of the fiscal year that ended in March, helped by falling inflation and tax cuts that boosted consumer spending and corporate borrowing.

The bank’s net advances grew 16% year‑on‑year in the quarter, largely due to higher retail and corporate lending. Total deposits also increased by 15%.

Last month, larger rivals HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank also surpassed profit expectations, thanks to strong loan growth.

Net interest income – the gap between interest earned on loans and interest paid on deposits – rose 8% to ₹7,876 crore.

Provisions and contingencies dropped 36% quarter‑on‑quarter and 43% year‑on‑year to ₹516 crore.

The bank’s gross non‑performing asset ratio slipped to 1.2% at the end of March, down from 1.42% a year earlier.
