Moonrider Accelerates Market Expansion of Electric Tractors at Diesel-Competitive Prices
Bengaluru electric tractor manufacturer Moonrider has secured $6 million in Series A financing, led by deep-tech investment firm pi Ventures. Singularity AMC and current backers Advantedge Founders and Micelio Fund also participated. The funding will accelerate the company’s transition from trial phases to nationwide distribution, aiming for first customer deliveries by February 2026 amid India’s agricultural electrification initiatives.
Established in 2023 by former Volvo veterans Anoop Srikantaswamy (CEO) and Ravi Kulkarni (COO), Moonrider produces heavy-duty electric tractors ranging from 27 HP to 75 HP. The company’s vertically integrated approach includes proprietary battery systems, drivetrains, and electronics. These machines match diesel tractor prices while reducing operational expenses by up to 80%, featuring seven-hour operation periods, 30-minute rapid charging, mobile app integration, and over-the-air software enhancements.
The company states its electric tractors are India’s only fully certified, road-legal models across all power categories, enabling swift commercialization. Moonrider has secured commitments for 6,000 units through three-year supply agreements and is conducting field trials with agricultural service providers like EM3 AgriServices in Rajasthan and financial partner Samunnati to drive uptake among farming collectives.
Economic Transformation for Agricultural Operators
With approximately one million diesel tractors sold yearly in India, operators face annual fuel expenditures averaging ₹2.5 lakh per unit. Moonrider’s integrated cooling technology and proprietary battery management reduce operating costs by 70%, achieving immediate economic benefits for users. Company leadership emphasizes farmer-centric design: “Our development prioritizes one metric – does this increase profitability for agricultural operators? Electrification delivers unequivocally.”
pi Ventures Managing Director Sohil Bhagat noted Moonrider’s ground-up engineering strategy: “Rather than retrofitting existing tractors, they’ve created a purpose-built EV platform matching conventional costs while meeting rigorous farm requirements.” Singularity AMC’s Suyash Kela added: “We invest in innovators transforming traditional industries through domain expertise – Moonrider’s technology directly enhances agricultural productivity.”
Growth Drivers and Strategic Vision
The international electric tractor sector expands at over 20% annually, fueled by rising fuel prices and environmental regulations. India’s $10 billion tractor market presents substantial potential, with government programs like FAME-III subsidies accelerating adoption.
Investment funds will enhance powertrain durability across varied terrain and climates, expand manufacturing capabilities to 10,000+ annual units, and prepare for overseas expansion into Southeast Asian and African markets following domestic certification achievements.
Moonrider’s technical team combines expertise from global automotive engineering, agricultural technology, and battery development, with field demonstrations confirming economic benefits across multiple crop types including rice, sugarcane, and horticulture.
This investment underscores Moonrider’s strategy to reshape agricultural economics through electrification, establishing infrastructure for data-enabled farming. As traditional fuel dependence decreases, the company positions itself as an innovator in sustainable agricultural machinery for small-scale farmers.
