India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has unveiled draft revisions to the Information Technology Rules of 2021, targeting the growing risks posed by generative AI and digitally altered media. The initiative responds to increasing global anxieties about synthetic content’s potential to undermine privacy, national security, and societal trust.
Under the proposed rules, platforms utilizing AI to create or distribute content must enforce robust safety protocols. These include mechanisms to verify authenticity, clear labeling of AI-generated material, and measures to hold users accountable for malicious activity. The regulations explicitly aim to curb the spread of deceptive or harmful synthetic media, such as hyper-realistic deepfakes used for disinformation campaigns, financial scams, or harassment.
The ministry also advocates for the adoption of advanced detection tools to automatically identify manipulated content. Officials clarified that the framework seeks to support AI advancements while prioritizing ethical safeguards and public welfare.
Industry analysts note that these amendments could establish India’s leadership in AI governance, offering a model for responsibly integrating generative AI into social media, news platforms, and other digital services.
MeitY plans to consult stakeholders—including technology firms, legal experts, and civil society groups—to refine the draft rules, ensuring they promote innovation while minimizing risks.
