Language Learning Platform Preply Secures $150 Million Series D at $1.2 Billion Valuation
January 23, 2026
Language learning has emerged as one of the most rapidly expanding sectors in global education, yet many learners continue to encounter impersonal digital platforms. Preply addresses this gap by offering live human tutoring enhanced by artificial intelligence.
The company operates the world’s largest marketplace for live language instruction, linking over 100,000 tutors with students across 180 countries. Lessons are available in more than 90 languages, combining the expertise of educators with AI tools that monitor progress, organize materials, and provide performance insights—freeing tutors to focus on personalized instruction and meaningful interactions.
Today, Preply closed a $150 million Series D funding round led by investment firm WestCap, securing a $1.2 billion valuation.
Personalized Learning Through Human Connection
Founded in 2012 by Kirill Bigai and Dmytro Voloshyn, Preply was born from the founders’ own struggles to find quality online language tutoring. “When I first arrived in the U.S., I could grasp only 60% of real conversations,” recalls Bigai. “Traditional methods prioritized exams over practical communication. Our vision was to make flexible, affordable, personalized tutoring accessible globally.”
Bigai emphasizes Preply’s dual focus: “Our mission is to foster connection and belonging through language. We’ve remained committed to enhancing—not replacing—human relationships with responsible technology.” The platform’s AI acts as a behind-the-scenes assistant, analyzing learner data to customize feedback while tutors drive engagement.
A 2025 LeanLab Education study reinforced this approach, revealing that 97% of learners credit human interaction for their progress and confidence. Participants advanced up to three times faster than industry benchmarks.
Unlike competitors focusing solely on gamified apps or unstructured conversation practice, Preply combines structured one-on-one tutoring with AI-driven personalization. “We prioritize privacy and transparency,” notes Bigai. “Data collection adheres strictly to GDPR guidelines, and we minimize information gathering to optimize learning outcomes.”
Commitment to Inclusion
Preply’s team of 750+ employees spans 60 countries. “Diversity is embedded in our DNA,” says Bigai.
Expansion and Innovation Ahead
The new funding will fuel global growth, AI development, and engineering team expansion. Preply aims to hire 100 engineers this year to refine its recommendation algorithms and deepen lesson customization.
“We’re doubling down on R&D to empower millions more learners,” concludes Bigai. “Every lesson should feel uniquely tailored—that’s how we help people unlock opportunity through language.”
