  • St. Mira’s Primary School Takes the Pune Metro for World Animal Day

St. Mira’s Primary School took the Pune Metro – for a special reason – the occasion of World Animal Day

PUNE: A group of 100 children from St. Mira’s Primary School took the Pune Metro – for a special reason – on the occasion of World Animal Day, October 4, 2024.

Gathering at Ruby Hall Metro Station, they took the train to Civil Court. The 8 to 9-year-old students displayed colorful placards and chanted heartfelt slogans such as “Birds and animals are our brothers and sisters,” “Save animals, Save Earth,” and “Shoot with a camera, not with guns.”

World Animal Day marks the anniversary of St. Francis. The student rally also remembered Pune’s saint, Sadhu Vaswani, who advocated animal rights.

With unwavering enthusiasm, the children, accompanied by dedicated teachers, engaged the commuters, inviting them to pledge to go meatless for at least one day on November 25, the birthday of Sadhu Vaswani.

One student expressed the motivation behind their efforts: “We should stop killing animals for our meals and taking their skin for our dresses. We should rather take care of them, feed them, and love them. I want everyone to do the same.”

The school principal, Ruby Karna, noted the strategic decision to engage with the public in a place where people often have a moment to pause and listen while waiting for their trains and stops. “This not only helps in spreading awareness but also instills in the children the values of kindness and compassion toward all living beings. When they take the extra effort to convince others, they will themselves remember it for a longer time.” the principal added.

The students’ infectious commitment to this cause has undoubtedly made a significant impact, fostering a greater understanding of the need for animal rights and vegetarianism within the community. As they continue to spread their message, the hope remains that more individuals will join in their efforts to create a more compassionate world for all beings.

PUNE: As many as 65 social organizations have decided to come together to start the ‘Sajag Raho’ campaign against the backdrop of upcoming assembly elections in the state of Maharashtra. This was announced during a Press Conference held in the city today. Representatives of various social organizations including Padmashree Girish Prabhune, Former IAS Officer Avinash Dharmadhikari, Xitij Texas Gaikwad from the Ambedkari Movement, Dalit Literature Scholar Dr Dhananjay Bhise and Adv Abhijit Deshmukh were present during this Press Conference.

It was informed during the Press Conference that the ‘Sajag Raho’ campaign shall be run to make the state of Maharashtra ‘Hatred Free’. For the past 10 years, the country has been making speedy progress on various fronts with the target set for ‘Vikasit Bharat’. It has been observed that caste hatred is being systematically created in the state of Maharashtra, which has the rich history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj uniting people from all castes and creeds in the successful fight for Swarajya. To counter this issue in the poll-bound progressive state of Maharashtra the time has come to take a strong stand against the narratives that spread caste hatred such an awareness campaign is needed, opined the dignitaries present in the Press conference.

During the Press Conference, it was informed that About 200 plus individuals having a strong social work background from over 65 social organizations attended the recent meeting held in Pune where the idea to initiate the ‘Sajag Raho’ campaign was conceived.

Some of them include noted author Padmashree Namdeo Kamble, Veteran Social Worker Padmashree Girish Prabhune, Dr. Dhananjay Bhise from the Matang Sahitya Parishad, Former IAS Officer Avinash Dharmadhikari, Founder of Sudarshan Channel Suresh Chavhanke, Xitij Gaikwad from the Ambedkar movement, renowned television personality Dr. Uday Nirgudkar, Pradeep Rawat from the Vivek Vichar Manch and Jagdish Kadam Trustee of Shivsrushti.

However, some political personalities and hypocritical social institutions are misleading these backward communities with some extremely fake narratives that also had some impact during the recent Loksabha elections.

However, such an effort to disturb the harmony in the state of Maharashtra, which is often referred to as the growth engine of the country needs to be dealt with a strong and informative drive like Sajag Raho so that the attempts to create rifts in the Hindu community are countered felt the dignitaries present during this Press Conference.

  • How Law Can Combat the Rise of Fake News and Misinformation

INDIA: Rest The Case, a premier legal platform dedicated to connecting the public with the legal world by offering easy-to-understand, insightful content, resources, and expert discussions. A panel discussion was held on the topic “Defending Truth: The Role of Law in Countering Fake News and Misinformation”.

The event, moderated by Jyoti Sahu, featured prominent legal experts: Adv Madhav Shankar, Adv. Akanksha Magon, Adv. Vinayak Bhatia, Adv. Syed Rafat Jahan.

It highlighted the critical challenges of misinformation and the legal mechanisms to address them. This event brings together leading legal experts to discuss Defending Truth: The Role of Law in Countering Fake News and Misinformation. The session began with the significant threat fake news and misinformation pose to democracy, public trust, and the Justice system.

Adv. Vinayak Bhatia explained that India has some legal provisions addressing misinformation through civil and criminal remedies. However, there remains a lack of a coherent, overarching law that defines and distinguishes between fake news and misinformation. He noted that while laws like the IT Act and press regulations exist, digital media remains largely unregulated, leaving a significant gap in addressing online misinformation. A recurring theme throughout the discussion was the challenge of legally defining fake news. Adv. Akanksha Magon pointed out that much of the confusion arises from the intentional versus unintentional spread of misinformation. She discussed how digital literacy and responsible Journalism must play a role in preventing the spread of fake news. The panel agreed that a lack of media literacy among the public exacerbates the issue, as many people unknowingly spread false information. Adv. Syed Rafat added a crucial dimension to the debate by emphasizing the political nature of fake news. She pointed out that misinformation often favors certain political agendas and spreads quickly, causing harm before it can be identified and corrected. She called for immediate legal action, highlighting the need for special investigative teams to address fake news cases promptly.

Adv. Madhav Shankar elaborated on the delicate balance between regulating misinformation and protecting free speech. He referenced the ‘Shreya Singhal Case, which emphasized that restrictions on free speech must be reasonable. The panel agreed that while regulating fake news is necessary, care must be taken not to infringe on fundamental rights. He further noted that the Digital India Bill, currently under consideration, includes provisions to address misinformation on digital platforms. However, he criticized the bill for not adequately addressing the issue of harm caused by the rapid spread of misinformation. He suggested that artificial intelligence could be a useful tool in tackling misinformation, although pre-publication censorship, as used for OTT platforms, may not be feasible.

The panelists provided examples of how fake news has caused significant disruptions in India. They referenced the spread of misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic and how it fueled fear and chaos. Adv. Syed Rafat mentioned incidents during the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests and farmers’ protests, where fake news caused public unrest and worsened tensions. Adv. Vinayak Bhatia added that misinformation often targets vulnerable communities and can lead to real-world harm, as seen in incidents of mob violence and lynchings fueled by false information about individuals or groups.

The discussion also covered the legal remedies available to individuals and organizations targeted by fake news. Adv. Bhatia explained that while criminal remedies such as defamation suits and complaints under the IT Act exist, civil damages for victims are not well-developed in Indian Jurisprudence. He called for courts to take a more proactive approach in awarding damages to victims of fake news to deter such behavior. Adv. Rafat outlined practical steps individuals can take when they encounter fake news, including filing online police complaints, reporting misinformation to cyber cells, and sending defamation notices to those responsible. The panelists unanimously agreed that the existing laws are insufficient to combat the growing menace of fake news.

Adv. Akanksha emphasized the need for stricter laws and more accountability for those spreading misinformation. She also highlighted the role of responsible Journalism in curbing the spread of false information. In closing, the panelists reiterated that while legal solutions are essential, a combination of media literacy, responsible journalism, and robust legal frameworks is necessary to counter the complex issue of fake news and misinformation in India.

The panelists emphasized that defending truth in the digital age requires robust legal frameworks, media literacy, and collaboration between tech platforms and governments. Legal measures must balance free speech with accountability, ensuring that misinformation is curbed without stifling legitimate expression. The role of law is crucial, but education and awareness are equally important in empowering individuals to discern truth from falsehoods. Together, these efforts can help mitigate the spread of fake news and misinformation, safeguarding public trust and democratic integrity.Final Takeaways From The Panelist:

Adv. Syed Rafat Jahan – Say that, we need to have special investigation units, with specialized investigative officers and special equipment with stricter laws and immediate arrests to bring in fear and also enhance the conviction rate. Lastly, a special dedicated act with a prescribed procedure to conduct inquiry and trials effectively and speedily for justice to prevail in its natural form to uphold the constitutional essence of our country.

Adv. Akanksha Magon: says that Laws play a vital role in combating fake news and misinformation by imposing liability on perpetrators. They regulate social media platforms, ensuring accountability for disseminated content. Legislation like defamation laws, misinformation acts, Judicial interventions, and data protection laws deter the spread of false information and safeguard against manipulated or fabricated data. We need effective legal frameworks to empower fact-checking initiatives, promoting truth and public trust.

Adv. Vinayak Bhatia: In his views, India’s legal framework addresses misinformation through laws like the BNS and IT Act, but stronger, proportionate penalties based on harm caused, and recognition of personal injury from fake news are needed. Comprehensive reforms should enhance platform accountability, ensure faster enforcement, and maintain a balance between regulation and free speech, with Judicial oversight and international cooperation.

Adv. Madhav Shankar: Says that, The Role of Law in Countering Misinformation. “We explored how legal frameworks and Judicial actions can help combat fake news and hold the media accountable. This meaningful exchange and discussion on fake news reminded me of Winston Churchill’s words which ring true even today,” A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.

  • Vaidehi Dattaji Gaikwad Training Institute for Autism Hosts Second Convocation Ceremony for Autism Diploma Graduates

Autistic children need acceptance, unconditional love and respect – Aarti Deo

PUNE: Vaidehi Dattaji Gaikwad Training Institute for Autism launched by Small Steps Morris Child Development  Centre, Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in collaboration with  Sundarji’s Global Academia on Sunday conducted its second convocation ceremony for 80 trainers completing the Autism Management course. The one-year Post Graduate Diploma in Autism Management and seven months certified foundation course in Autism started in 2023 is accredited by Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU).

The convocation ceremony was held at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital on Sunday in the presence of Chief Guest Aarti Deo, Director of Learning and Development Academy at Mumbai, Guest of Honour Ajinkya Deo, the renowned actor along with Abhay Kudale, HoD Department of Health Sciences at Savitribai Phule Pune University, real estate developer Dattaji Gaikwad,  Course Directors Dr. Suneel Godbole and Masrat Tawawala,  Dr. Rajan Joshi, HoD Paediatrics Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Research Centre and Vaidehi Gaikwad.

Narrating his own experience, Actor Ajinkya Deo said that parents of autistic children should not lose hope. Although the situation is challenging, we can find a way out.

Aarti Deo, Director of the Learning and Development Academy at Mumbai, said that the first and most important step is to accept and give him or her unconditional love and respect. The challenge is to connect with the child, especially since our approach is to prevent the child from doing different things. We need to reconnect with the autistic child through words pictures or other means. The child is intelligent but the intelligence is locked. Give the child a little space. Create the right environment for it to perceive choices, and motivate and the child will come along, even if the path is not easy.

Stressing that parents should not be apologetic about their child, nor be guilty, they need to create an ecosystem around where children can also be looked at and cared for by others. We need to trust them. While taking care of the child, mothers should not neglect their own mental and physical health, she said.

Abhay Kudale, HoD Department of Health Sciences at Savitribai Phule Pune University said that the course is now reaching beyond Pune to the rural parts of Maharashtra. Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Research Centre should apply for a university-affiliated PhD research centre which will pave the way for more research and training programs.

Dr. Rajan Joshi, HoD Paediatrics, Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Research Centre said that at a time when the number of children with autism is growing, there is a need for training centers and this is what our center has been pursuing.

Consultant Paediatrician and course director Dr. Suneel Godbole said that Autism is a growing problem amongst children worldwide. This neurological disorder affects the behavior of an individual and the ability to communicate or interact socially. While there is no cure for this there are medicines and therapies to reduce the severity. We need trained manpower to understand and handle children with autism. The role of parents is also crucial. Recognizing the growing number and need for trained manpower we started these courses in 2023. Any graduate, parent, educator, or caregiver can apply for this course. The course includes 30 expert faculties and hands-on training and on completion of this course, the certified professionals can work as resource room custodians in inclusive schools, shadow teachers for autistic children, or early interventionists.

The trained professionals not only help manage autistic children with a positive attitude but also can help spread awareness about Autism, said Dr Godbole.
