    There will be a change in the rules of the bank

    The Reserve Bank of India has allowed banks to increase the ATM interchange fee, due to which any withdrawal or balance check from an ATM outside the home bank network will cost you a little more than before. Earlier you had to pay Rs 17 while withdrawing money from an ATM, but now it has become Rs 19. On the other hand, earlier you had to pay Rs 6 for checking balance from a bank’s ATM, now it has been increased to Rs 7.

    Digital Banking

    Banks are constantly adding new features to promote digital banking. But now customers can avail better services than before through online banking. For this, banks are also introducing chatbots powered by artificial intelligence. To make digital transactions safe, security like two-factor authentication and biometric verification will be introduced.

    Minimum Balance Rules

    Let us tell you that the rules related to minimum balance of many banks like SBI, Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank have been changed. This balance depends on whether your account is in urban, semi-urban or rural area. At the same time, you may have to pay a penalty for keeping a balance less than the fixed amount.

    Changes in interest rates

    Many banks are now changing the interest rates on savings accounts and FDs. Now the interest on savings accounts will depend on the account balance. That is, the more the balance, the better the return.

    USA: The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) will recognize five individuals for professional and business achievement and three individuals for community service. at its Convention 2025 celebrating its 36th Anniversary from March 28th to 30th at Brisbane Marriott in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. They will be honored at the Finale Awards Banquet of the convention on March 29th.

    Dignitaries at the conference inauguration include Queensland Premier David Crisafulli, Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner of Brisbane, and India’s Consul General Neetu M. Bhagotia.     The Convention theme is “The Indian Diaspora’s Role in Shaping Future Technologies.” The convention will start with a welcome reception/dinner inauguration on Friday, March 28th. There are eight conference sessions on Saturday,y March 29th. Discussion topics are Artificial Intelligence (AI), Quantum Computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT); Nanotechnology, Advanced Materials, and Electronic/Photonic Devices; Pharmaceutical, Food Supplements, and Biomedical Innovations; and Energy Generation and Storage Devices.

    A second track of conference sessions will cover NRIs and PIOs Working Closer to Achieve Common Goals; Diaspora Women and their Growing Contributions in Various Sectors; and Diaspora Youth & Young Achievers: The role they can play in the Diaspora Movement. The last session will be a plenary session “GOPIO Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Worldwide Networking of the Diaspora Businesses and SMEs in India.’

    There will be entertainment after the welcome dinner on Friday and again after the Award Ceremony on Saturday evening.

    Founded in 1989, GOPIO is a non-partisan, not-for-profit, secular organization with Individual Life Members and chapter delegates from over 100 chapters in 36 countries.     Mr. Peter Varghese has served as Chancellor of The University of Queensland since 2016. A distinguished public servant, he has served as Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, High Commissioner to India and Malaysia, and Director-General of the Office of National Assessments, Australia’s peak intelligence agency. He is also the author of the 2018 India Economic Strategy to 2035, commissioned by the then Australian Prime Minister. Mr. Varghese received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters in 2013 from The University of Queensland. He sits on the boards of CARE Australia and North Queensland Airports, chairs Asialink’s advisory council, and sits on the governing board of the Rajaratnam School of International Studies. 

    Achievement in Entrepreneurship – Maha Sinnathambi, Founder and Chairman, Springfield City Group, Brisbane, Australia

    Mr. Maha Sinnathamby, Chairman, of Springfield City Group is the visionary founder of Greater Springfield, Australia’s fastest emerging new city.  In 2010 he was recognized as the World’s Best Master Community Planner by the International Real Estate Federation. An iconic entrepreneur, he was declared one of Queensland, Australia’s 50 greatest thinkers of all time, by Newscorp in 2014. Maha, supported by three levels of Government and private capital, has invested nearly 12 billion dollars in Greater Springfield’s infrastructure and construction. His city-building project grows by $600 million annually, while contributing social and economic value to the Queensland and Australian economies.

    Mr. Shaheen Majeed, Shaheen has held diverse roles, including sales, supply chain management, manufacturing, regulatory compliance, and global marketing.     Prof. Prasad KDV Yarlagadda worked in industry and university for over 40 years in several countries.  He is currently Dean of Engineering at the University of Southern Queensland.  He is an outstanding researcher with global recognition in the field of Bio-Manufacturing.  His track record of 700 publications, 62 Ph.D successful supervisions,  $20M research funding, and several awards including the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) and Researcher of the Year in 2020 are true reflections of his accomplishments.  In addition to several Presidential roles in various community organizations, he served as Chairperson, of the Science and Technology Council, GOPIO International for a decade.

    Media Achievement – Rohit Vyas, International Broadcast Journalist and Documentary Filmmaker, New Jersey, USA

    Mr. Rohit Vyas is currently the longest-serving broadcast and print journalist of Indian origin in the United States. His nearly five decades-long career has focused on the Indian Diaspora community worldwide as well as international affairs and global diplomacy. Most recently he was the News Director, Principal News Anchor, and Senior Vice President of TV ASIA (USA).  He is now also an acclaimed documentary filmmaker.

    Prof. Rajasekhar R. Vangapaty, an academic advisor and professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology, SUNY, has over four decades of global higher education experience at various universities and colleges, focusing on domestic and international student success, mentorship, and community empowerment. As Executive Vice President of GOPIO Manhattan, he leads community service programs in the U.S. and India, supporting Indian students in the US and training hundreds of teachers and women in leadership, technology, spoken English, and fashion design skills.

    Harmohan Singh Walia is an engineer, politician, radio news-reader, poet, author, community leader, Olympic torch-bearer, and now voluntary community photographer, who brings smiles to people’s faces.     Bangladesh Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman has rejected all speculation about a state of emergency in the South Asian country that witnessed the sudden fall of its former PM Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League government amid a major protest over a job quota issue on August 5, 2024.

    The Army Chief has warned people about misinformation and said rumours should not cause distraction.

    General Waker made these comments on Monday during the “Officer’s Address” at Dhaka Cantonment, reported local Dhaka Tribune.

    The meeting took place amid speculation that a possible martial law will be imposed or a state of emergency will be declared in the current political situation.

    Key issues discussed

    Sources at the meeting told Dhaka Tribune that the army chief addressed several key issues, including law and order, the spread of misinformation, and provocative rhetoric.  

    “The country and its people remain the army’s highest priority,” General Waker, whose forces have been deployed with magistracy powers for over six months to assist the civil administration, was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

    “Do not react to provocation. We must stay focused on our duty to support the country’s stability. Instruct your soldiers to do the same. Work with wisdom. The nation expects a lot from us, and fulfilling those expectations is our sacred duty,” he said.

    The meeting took place at a time when an Indian news channel claimed the country’s military would soon take over by removing the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

    Yunus has been heading the government ever since Hasina’s government collapsed last year.

    Sources told India Today that the army may pressure the President to declare a state of emergency or stage a coup against Yunus.

    Bangladesh Army rejects India report

    Issuing a statement, the Bangladesh army clarified that the article, which lacks credible sources or verifiable evidence, is a blatant attempt to spread baseless rumours. 

    “It is deeply troubling that India Today continues to publish sensationalist narratives without due diligence or a responsible commitment to journalistic integrity,” the statement read.

    Banks must prioritize digital transformation that connects every area of their organization if they are to compete and thrive in today’s retail banking industry. As the Capgemini report found, 70% of bank CXOs plan on increasing digital transformation investment by up to 10%. The advisory firm notes that banks are enhancing their data management capabilities and modernizing legacy systems first and foremost, migrating core functions to the cloud where necessary to establish an agile, cost-effective foundation for future digitalization in banking.

    This modernization strategy enables banks to eliminate operational silos and allow employees across all offices by secure digital methods to access the same data — what’s known as a single source of truth. This way, banking professionals can make faster, better-informed decisions. Unified insights allow front office staff to provide a higher standard of customer care, for example, by implementing analytics tools to unearth valuable customer insights. Banks can also tap workflow solutions like robotic process automation (RPA), artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to enhance middle-office risk management and back-office processing.

    Bangladeshi security officials have arrested the top leader of a Rohingya insurgent group on charges of illegally entering, sabotaging and terrorist activities in the South Asian nation which is facing political instability since the exit of former PM Sheikh Hasina on August 5 last year.

    The arrested leader was identified as Ataullah Abu Ammar Jununi.

    He is the commander-in-chief of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army.

    Apart from Jununi, police arrested 10 others while conducting a raid in Narayanganj and Mymensingh regions of Bangladesh.

    More than 1 million Rohingyas, who fled from neighbouring Myanmar, are currently staying in Bangladesh as refugees.

    Remand

    Bangladeshi law enforcers had produced Jununi and six others before the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court of Narayanganj and sought a 10-day remand in two separate cases.

    After the hearing, the court granted a 10-day remand for interrogation, five days in each case, Kayum Khan, Narayanganj court police inspector, told Bangladesh’s leading newspaper The Daily Star.

    The five others arrested were identified as Mostak Ahmed, 66; Salimullah, 27; Asmatullah, 24; Md Hasan, 43; and Moniruzzaman, 26.

    RAB also arrested three women and a child along with the six. The four were also shown arrested in the two cases and the court sent the arrestees to jail, reported The Daily Star.

    Based on intelligence, a team of RAB-11 conducted a drive at the Siddhirganj area of Narayanganj, and Natun Bazar area of Mymensingh on March 16 and arrested the ten, AHM Sazzad Hossain, the commanding officer of Rab-11, told The Daily Star.

    A First Information Report was filed with Siddhirganj police station which reportedly mentioned that the arrested people had gathered in the districts and held secret meetings to conduct grievous crimes.

    Rab seized Tk 21.39 lakh in cash, a knife, a sharp steel chain and four wristwatches from their possessions,  Shahinur Alam, the officer-in-charge of Siddhirganj Police Station, told the newspaper.

    ARSA

    ARSA is a group that operates from Myanmar’s Rakhine region.

    In the region, mostly Muslim Rohingya people have faced persecution.

    The group came to light on August 25, 2017 after attacking around 30 police and army posts in Rakhine state, killing 12 people.

    The incident triggered a ruthless military counter-attack that forced 740,000 Rohingya to escape to neighbouring Bangladesh.

    After the prosecuted Rohingyas took shelter in the squalid camps of Ukhiya and Teknaf, ARSA members have been continuing their targeted killing missions in the camp directed by its commander, reported The Daily Star.

    The outlook for microfinance institutions (MFIs) in India is improving after months of stress caused by overleveraging of borrowers, a new report said on Wednesday.

    According to the report by HSBC Research, better loan collections and higher disbursements in February helped boost sentiment in the sector.

    While the global brokerage firm expects a positive turnaround for MFIs in 2025, it also noted that some challenges still need to be addressed.

    The report highlighted that “X bucket” collection efficiency in most states improved to 98.5-99.5 per cent in February. “X bucket” refers to accounts that had no overdue payments at the end of the previous month.

    “X bucket” collection efficiency measures the percentage of EMIs collected from these accounts during a given month, compared to the total EMIs due from all such accounts in that period.

    This improvement has also contributed to a reduction in high employee attrition rates, which had been a concern for the sector over the past year.

    However, in Karnataka, a government ordinance caused significant disruptions in MFI operations in February.

    The state government’s proposed bill aims to completely exempt borrowers from repaying loans, including interest, taken from unlicensed and unregistered MFIs.

    HSBC Research noted that individual microfinance institutions have taken steps to minimise the impact and stabilise their operations.

    Looking ahead, credit costs for MFIs are expected to decline in the April-June quarter due to improving asset quality.

    However, new regulations set to take effect on April 1, which cap lending to borrowers, are likely to push credit costs higher again.

    However, HSBC Research believes banks with microfinance exposure have a stronger long-term growth potential.

    These banks are better placed due to their improving asset quality and attractive valuations, which could lead to better returns for investors.

    “Banks, with their diversified portfolios and stronger earnings resilience, are expected to be in a better position than standalone MFIs in the long run,” the report said.

    Let us tell you that if a number is not used for voice calls, SMS or data for 90 days, then it becomes inactive. Such numbers are again given to new users. In such a situation, when these numbers are linked to your bank and other financial services, then it can cause problems.

    After April 1, such bank accounts will be deleted every week

    Mobile number is necessary for any payment. If there is any problem with your number, the transaction may fail. Many users link multiple numbers to their bank accounts or UPI apps. If any of these numbers remains inactive for months, it will be deleted.

    To prevent transaction-related issues, NPCI has mandated that banks and UPI apps update the list of deleted numbers every week. Any inactive or recycled number after April 1 will be removed from the bank’s system immediately. If you want to keep your bank account or UPI ID active, recharge it immediately.
