  • UNICEF assessment shows 2024 was one of the worst years in history for children in conflict

The impact of armed conflicts on children around the world reached devastating and likely record levels in 2024, as per an assessment by the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The study, released on Friday, found that the rights of a record number of children were being violated, including by being killed and injured, missing out of school and life-saving vaccines, and being critically malnourished; the number was expected to grow.

From Palestine to Myanmar, Haiti to Sudan, the world is experiencing the highest number of conflicts since World War II. Almost 19 percent of the world’s children – over 473 million – now live in conflict zones, and 47.2 million have been displaced by conflict and violence.

Thousands of children have been killed and injured in Gaza, and in Ukraine, the UN verified more child casualties during the first nine months of 2024 than during all of 2023.

There have been widespread reports of rape and sexual violence against women and girls in conflict settings.

In Haiti, so far this year, there has been a 1,000 percent increase in reported incidents of sexual violence against children. In situations of armed conflict, children with disabilities also tend to be disproportionately exposed to violence and rights violations.

    Education severely disrupted

More than 52 million children in countries affected by conflict are estimated to be out of school.

Children in the Gaza Strip, and a significant portion of children in Sudan, have missed out on more than a year of education, while in countries such as Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Syria, schools have been damaged, destroyed or repurposed, leaving millions of children without access to learning.

The destruction of educational infrastructure and insecurity near schools have exacerbated an already dire situation for children’s education in these regions.

    Malnutrition and famine

Malnutrition among children in conflict zones has also risen to alarming levels, as conflict and armed violence continue to be the primary drivers of hunger in numerous hotspots, disrupting food systems, displacing populations, and obstructing humanitarian access.

For example, in Sudan, famine was declared in North Darfur, the first famine determination since 2017. In 2024, more than half a million people in five conflict-affected countries are estimated to be living in the most extreme food insecurity situations.

    Healthcare threatened

Conflicts are also having a devastating effect on children’s access to critical healthcare.

Around 40 percent of unvaccinated and under-vaccinated children live in countries that are either partially or entirely affected by conflict.

These children are often the most vulnerable to disease outbreaks like measles and polio, because of disruptions and lack of access to security, nutrition, and health services.

The impact on children’s mental health is also huge; exposure to violence, destruction and the loss of loved ones can result in reactions such as depression, nightmares and difficulty sleeping, aggressive or withdrawn behaviour, sadness and fear, among others.

This must not be the new normal

“By almost every measure, 2024 has been one of the worst years on record for children in conflict in UNICEF’s history – both in terms of the number of children affected and the level of impact on their lives,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell.

“A child growing up in a conflict zone is far more likely to be out of school, malnourished, or forced from their home – too often repeatedly – compared to a child living in places of peace. This must not be the new normal. We cannot allow a generation of children to become collateral damage to the world’s unchecked wars.”

  • Children could face eight-times more heatwaves in 2050 than in 2000, warns UNICEF report

UNICEF releases new report alerting about tough impact of heatwave on children in 2050
UNICEF issues new alert on heatwave and its impact on children in its latest report. Photo Courtesy: Unsplash

UNICEF has warned in its latest report that children could face eight times more heatwaves in 2050 than what was faced in 2000.

The future of childhood hangs in the balance if urgent action is not taken to safeguard children’s rights in a changing world, UNICEF warned in its flagship report released on World Children’s Day today.

The State of the World’s Children 2024: The Future of Childhood in a Changing World, projects how three major global forces – or megatrends – will impact children’s lives by 2050 and beyond.

The megatrends – demographic change, climate and environmental crises, and breakthrough technologies – provide key indications of the challenges and opportunities children may face in the future.

“Children are experiencing a myriad of crises, from climate shocks to online dangers, and these are set to intensify in the years to come,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell.

“The projections in this report demonstrate that the decisions world leaders make today – or fail to make – define the world children will inherit. Creating a better future in 2050 requires more than just imagination, it requires action. Decades of progress, particularly for girls, are under threat,” Russell said.

The climate crisis is already dire, with 2023 being the hottest year on record.

According to the report, in the decade of 2050-2059, climate and environmental crises are expected to become even more widespread, with eight times as many children exposed to extreme heatwaves, three times as many exposed to extreme river floods, and nearly twice as many exposed to extreme wildfires, compared to the 2000s.

How these climate hazards impact children will be determined by their age, health, socioeconomic setting, and access to resources.

For example, a child with access to climate-resilient shelter, cooling infrastructure, health care, education, and clean water has a greater chance of surviving climatic shocks compared to a child without access.

The report underscores the urgent need for targeted environmental action to protect all children and mitigate the risks they face.

Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia are projected to have the largest child populations in the 2050s.

They also indicate an aging population, with the share of children expected to decrease in every region of the world. While still high, the child population drops below 40 per cent in Africa – down from 50 percent in the 2000s.

It falls below 17 percent in East Asia and Western Europe – where children made up 29 percent and 20 percent of the populations, respectively, in the 2000s.

These demographic shifts create challenges, with some countries under pressure to expand services for large child populations, while others balance the needs of a growing elderly population.

Meanwhile, the report acknowledges that frontier technologies – like Artificial Intelligence (AI) – offer both promise and peril for children, who are already interacting with AI embedded in apps, toys, virtual assistants, games, and learning software.

But the digital divide remains stark.

In 2024, over 95 percent of people in high-income countries are connected to the internet, compared to nearly 26 percent in low-income countries.

The report notes that a large percentage of youth in low-and middle-income countries have difficulty accessing digital skills, and this will impact their ability to effectively and responsibly use digital tools in education and future workplaces.

These barriers are often linked to socio-economic settings, gender, linguistics, and accessibility.

The report contains some good news. Life expectancy at birth is projected to increase.

Gains in children’s access to education over the last 100 years are also projected to continue, with nearly 96 percent of children globally expected to have at least a primary education in the 2050s, up from 80 percent in the 2000s.

Likewise, with increased investment in education and public health, and more stringent environmental protection, the report states that outcomes for children could improve significantly.

For example, the gender gap in educational attainment would narrow, and exposure to environmental hazards would be reduced.

  • Good news for children! School holidays will be held on the second Saturday of every month…government order

Whether you attend a government school or a private school, you are going to have fun on the second Saturday of every month. Because schools will be closed on the second Saturday of every month from now on. This decision of the state government is no less than a great news for children. Naib Singh Saini’s government has issued orders in this regard.

According to this, there will be a holiday on the second Saturday of the month in the government and private schools of Haryana. The education department’s order clearly states that it is being implemented in all government and private schools of the state from November 9, 2024.

If you open the school, you will have to pay the penalty!

In the instructions issued by the Haryana Education Directorate, it has been said that such orders were issued earlier as well. But most of the schools are not following it. It has been observed that during gazetted or other holidays some schools call students to school for activities other than studies, which is wrong. Therefore, all the district education officials have been ordered not to call the students to school during the holidays under any pretext. Otherwise action will be taken by the Education Department.

The directorate has also said that if any school violates the order, the matter will be referred to higher authorities for departmental action. If any action is taken in this matter, the head and management of the school concerned will be responsible for it.
