Apple has confirmed that it will permanently close its Infinite Loop retail store in Cupertino, US on January 20.

According to MacRumors, citing sources, the tech giant will be offering all employees at the store the opportunity to continue working with the company, with some employees being able to relocate to nearby stores, including the Apple Park Visitor Center and Apple Valley Fair.

Infinite Loop served as Apple’s headquarters from the mid-1990s until 2017, when its current headquarters opened in Apple Park.

“After many years of serving customers at our stores in the Bay Area, we plan to close our store at Infinite Loop,” an Apple spokesperson was quoted as saying.

“All of our valued team members will have the opportunity to continue their roles with Apple. We look forward to welcoming our customers at our nearby Apple Park Visitor Center and other locations, on Apple.com, and the Apple Store app,” it added.

Moreover, the tech giant is also permanently closing its Royal Hawaiian store in Honolulu on January 20.

Apple stated that it remains committed to “providing an excellent experience for our customers,” and that it has built new stores in the US, China, India, South Korea, and the UK this year, as well as expanded its online store to Chile and Vietnam, the report mentioned.

The offices at the Infinite Loop campus will continue to be used by Apple’s corporate employees, with only the store closing, the report added.

Meanwhile, Apple has pulled its latest flagship smartwatches, the Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2, from the company’s online store in the US due to a forthcoming import ban imposed by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) over a patent dispute with medical device maker Masimo.

  • Parliament passes Telecom Bill, paving way for Musk’s Starlink & others [details]

Use Starlink carefully as Russia can hit network, Musk warns Ukrainians

The Rajya Sabha on Thursday passed the Telecommunications Bill 2023 through a voice vote, just a day after it was passed in the Lok Sabha.

According to TechCrunch, the new bill allows spectrum allocation for satellite-based services without the need to participate in auctions — a move to favour companies such as OneWeb, Elon Musk’s Starlink, and Amazon’s Kuiper.

These companies are all keen to launch satellite broadband services in the world’s largest country and have long favoured an administrative process instead of auctions for spectrum allocation.

The bill, which eliminates the regulations that have been in place since the telegraph era dating back to 1885, provides the government with the authority to use and manage telecommunications services and networks, as well as track traffic data in the interest of national security, the report said.

The legislation also maintains the provision for the government to intercept communications.

The Bill, introduced by Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, includes a focus on creating robust telecom networks through a well-defined Chapter on RoW, including granting of RoW in a non-discriminatory manner and clarifying that this network shall not be considered for the purposes of tax, levy, cess, fees or duties on that property.

To reduce fraud, the bill also mandates biometric authentication for customers and limits the amount of SIM cards any subscriber can use.

It also includes civil penalties of up to $12,000 for violating specified sections and up to $6,00,400 for violating the terms and circumstances defined in the law.

  • WhatsApp rolling out channel alerts, search messages by date features on Android [details]

    whatsappIANS

Meta-owned WhatsApp is rolling out a feature to search messages by date, channel alerts, and hidden navigation labels on Android.

According to WABetaInfo, these new features are presently available to some beta testers and will be rolling out to more users over the coming days.

The “channel alerts” feature was designed to improve the overall user experience for channel administrators by providing real-time insights about the suspension of their channels, along with the ability to restore the channel by sending a request to WhatsApp.

If someone owns a channel, the report noted that it would be worth opening “channel alerts” within the channel info screen to see if there is any violation.

    WhatsApp

The introduction of a channel alerts feature adds a new layer of transparency to the platform.

In addition, the communication platform is also rolling out other two features after installing the latest update of the app — new improvements for the user interface by implementing a feature to automatically hide navigation labels and the top app bar while scrolling down the screen, and the ability to search messages by date.

The feature to search messages by date will offer users an efficient and convenient way to navigate through their chat history, retrieving specific messages from a particular date and helping them save time, the report mentioned.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp has introduced disappearing voice messages, that will allow users to send a voice message that can only be listened to once before it disappears. It is similar to the “View Once” option for photos and videos introduced in 2021, to add another layer of privacy to your messages.

  • Who is Emmett Shear, the new interim CEO of OpenAI? The controversy that led him to take up former CEO Sam Altman’s spot [details]

In a little over 48 hours of Sam Altman’s chaotic, dramatic sacking from OpenAI, the AI’s poster boy is joining Microsoft. The tech-giant announced the same on Monday, debunking all the speculative reports that he might return to OpenAI in a reinvented position. Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella wrote in a post on X saying that Altman would be joining the company to lead, “a new advanced AI research team.”

    The backstory

Almost every step and progress made by artificial intelligence has been controversial and concerning from the word go. Only now the controversy entered the boardroom of OpenAI. On Friday, the American artificial intelligence research organization ousted CEO Sam Altman and despite his aggressive bid to return, the board refused to give the nod of approval to the proposed terms of Altman’s reinstatement. In a huge twist to the tale, the board instead found someone else to step in Altman’s shoes. Emmett Shear, former chief executive and co-founder of Twitch, will be taking Altman’s spot for the interim period. Reports of Sam Altman being shocked with the development made the rounds of the financial and corporate world.

    Who is Emmett Shear?

The new CEO of OpenAI is the co-founder of video streaming site Twitch. He will take over as the interim CEO of the company that has had Altman as its poster boy transforming OpenAI from a non-profit into an organization with a lot of commercial clout and success. Shear confirmed the development on X and called his new role at OpenAI, “once in a lifetime opportunity.” He also added that the way Altman had been sacked was, “handled very badly.”

Shear reportedly has links to the altruism movement, which is cautious of the risks posed by artificial intelligence. A Wall Street Journal report quotes Shear’s take on AI as, “It’s like a universe destroying bomb. It’s bad in a way that makes global warming not a problem.”

Hired for skill, fired for ethics?

An influential figure in the AI industry, Sam Altman helped the firm launch the very popular and generic ChatGPT bot in 2015. Soon after Altman shared a picture with a guest card on social media announcing, “first and last time I ever wear one of these,” there have been speculations about the reason for his ouster.

Altman, 38, reportedly, has been ousted from the company for not being, “candid in his conversations.” He is also said to have clashed with board members and company officials who think Altman was moving too quickly and without sufficient cautionary measures in place when it comes to the safety implications of AI technology. However, in a statement explaining the development, OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap clarified that safety was not the main reason for Altman being fired, but credited the decision to, “breakdown in communications,” and loss of confidence in him. The news was soon followed by reports of some board officials trying to bring back Altman in a reinvented capacity since his ouster received immense backlash from investors and staff.

    Speculations galore

Parallel to the news of Sam Altman not returning as CEO, there were speculations that Microsoft Corp, with more than $10 billion stake in the company, is working with investors to bring Altman back. All that now stays put to rest, unless another twist in the tale awaits.
