  • NEP-2020- Jasudben ML School Organizes Culminat

Mumbai, 19 September 2024: Following NEP-2020, Jasudben ML School recently held culmination activities, ‘Rewind’ for Class 1 and ‘Flipped Out’ for Class 2, to mark the successful completion of the Integrated Units for the first term. These assessments provide a platform to 104 students from Class 1 and 108 students from Class 2 to demonstrate their learning in front of their parents, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP-2020) which promotes thematic learning and holistic development for young minds.

In the culmination event, students led interactive activities such as riddles in Gujarati and Hindi, quizzes where children tested their parent’s knowledge, and taught certain concepts to them which was then followed by a student-led panel discussion, where parents participated by asking questions through a chit system.

Damayanti Bhattacharya, Principal of Jasudben ML School, said, “Our school is one of the few who have implemented NEP-2020, and these integrated units aim to promote holistic education by allowing students to explore concepts beyond the traditional textbook approach. This not only improves their topic knowledge, but also helps to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication abilities among others.”

Throughout the term, students studied under many themes, with three broad topics chosen for culmination- The Food We Eat, the World of Animals, and People, Places, and Safety. Each theme was thoughtfully integrated into the curriculum covering subjects such as English, Mathematics, Hindi, Marathi, Music, Gujarati, Environmental Science (EVS), and Art. The Food We Eat unit focused on the origins and significance of food, distinguishing between healthy and unhealthy food, and identifying plants and animals as food sources. Similarly, the World of Animals unit taught students about pets, domestic and wild animals, animal sounds, habitats, and their classification as herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. The People, Places, and Safety focused on neighborhood awareness, practicing safety at school, home, and road, and the role of community helpers. This integration enabled students to explore and comprehend these topics and apply them in real life.

A parent of a Grade 1 student stated, “Watching our children’s regular assessments helps us understand what they are learning in class. This culmination of integrated units provides us with a more in-depth knowledge of their growth, allowing us to see how students learn and implement concepts in real-time.”

The culmination events concluded with students performing a short skit on road safety, bringing their lessons to life through drama.

  • Singapore: Education Minister tells teachers not to respond to work-related messages outside of school hours

Singapore’s Education Minister Chan Chun Sing has told teachers not to respond to work-related texts after their duty hours. The lawmaker made the comment while speaking at the annual Schools Work Plan Seminar.

As per reports, Singapore’s Ministry of Education (MOE) will protect teachers from “unreasonable expectations”. It will also monitor conducts that can affect their well-being, the MOE said on Wednesday.

The minister urged MOE to “set boundaries and recalibrate expectations” for educators, which will consider what teachers should do and what they need to refrain from.

Speaking about responses to work-related messages, the minister said exceptions can be made in cases of emergencies.

Highlighting school hours, he said teachers start work at about 7.30am. “Within a normal work day, if it’s not an emergency, beyond 5pm, you don’t have to respond to whether tomorrow the (parent’s) son must wear a brown or yellow T-shirt, right? Those are not important,” the minister said, as quoted by CNA.

The lawmaker also urged teachers to use their official emails and office numbers when talking to parents. He said he doesn’t expect teachers to share their personal numbers with parents.

Measures to streamline non-teaching duties, reduce teachers’ workload

From 2026, schools will have the option to either offer both an applied learning programme and a learning for life programme, or just one. Minister Chan said educational institutions will have the autonomy. This move will enable schools to free staffers for other priorities.

The two aforementioned programmes were introduced in Singaporean schools in 2014. While an applied learning programme helps students apply their thinking skills and using the knowledge across subjects, a learning for life programme is more hands on, incorporating real-life experimental learning.

So far, MOE’s efforts to streamline non-teaching duties have been successful, bringing down teachers’ exam administrative load by 10 percent.

The city-state is likely to witness further drop in these loads — invigilation load by up to 15 percent, exam session by half — when it introduces the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate from 2027.

University of Southampton commemorates plan to establish institute in Delhi NCRNew Delhi, 19th September 2024:  The University of Southampton celebrated the announcement of its new campus in India at a reception held at the British High Commissioner’s Residence in New Delhi.

The event was attended by British High Commissioner to India, Lindy Cameron, and was an opportunity to commemorate the long-standing positive relationship between the UK and India.

The University of Southampton has become the first international university to be granted a licence by the Indian government to establish a comprehensive campus in the country under the new National Education Policy (NEP). This noteworthy accomplishment highlights the University’s commitment to expand its global reach and foster international academic collaborations.

The new campus will be in Gurugram, within the National Capital Region, with an initial offering of four undergraduate and two postgraduate programmes. The four undergraduate programmes will be in computer science, business management, economics, and accounts and finance. The postgraduate programmes will be in international management and finance. New programmes will be introduced each year, with a wide portfolio soon on offer.

Professor Andrew Atherton, Vice-President International and Engagement at the University of Southampton, said: “India is a great country, the world’s largest democracy and one of the fastest growing superpowers. Its emergence economically, culturally and as a scientific and entrepreneurial powerhouse is tremendous and the pace of achievement is outstanding.

“Setting up an outstanding campus in Delhi NCR is a top priority for the University of Southampton. It marks a major milestone in our ambitious strategy to become a global university, a gateway to the world and an inclusive institution, with people at the heart of our mission.

“Our campus in India will enable us to offer the same Southampton degree as we provide in the UK in Delhi NCR, where we will establish the campus, in a world-class environment that provides an outstanding student experience. This means that University of Southampton Delhi will be as much part of the University and its vibrant and inclusive student community as any other campus.”

Lindy Cameron, British High Commissioner to India, said: “The University of Southampton’s new campus in India is a landmark moment in the UK-India educational partnership.

“As the first international university to establish a comprehensive campus in India, this collaboration will deepen the bonds between our two nations, ensuring that students from both the UK and India benefit.

“This initiative underscores our shared commitment to fostering academic excellence, innovation, and cultural exchange.”
The University of Southampton was issued a Letter of Intent on August 29 under the Universities Grants Commission regulations for setting up Indian campuses of foreign universities. This now paves the way for planning to progress, with the University of Southampton Delhi delivering education, research and knowledge exchange and enterprise activity in the country.

Alison Barrett MBE, Director India, British Council, said: “I congratulate the University of Southampton on being the first UK institution to secure a licence to establish a full campus in India under the UGC regulations – a testament to the enduring strength of India-UK educational ties.

“It gives me great pleasure to witness this partnership come to fruition. This milestone marks a significant step forward in realising the National Education Policy’s vision of internationalisation, ushering in a new era of world-class education and cultural exchange. The exciting opportunities from this partnership will advance the shared ambitions of both governments and shape a brighter future for young people from both countries.”

The University has been active in India for more than 50 years and has developed deep and mutually beneficial partnerships. The upcoming campus will enable the University of Southampton to build on these links by amplifying research collaboration and impact, extending teaching partnerships, creating two-way student and staff mobility, and ensuring local civic and community engagement.

The application process for those wanting to study at the new campus is expected to launch in October, with details publicised through the website: southampton.ac.uk/delhi

For fans of Gladiator! Flavius Belisarius is a man’ s man, a young and brilliant general who stands out amongst the other tyrannical and conniving men in his class. Unlike the others, he seeks the glory and restoration of Rome and needs little for himself. Or so he thought. All at once, he is enamored by a startlingly beautiful and famously promiscuous woman, Antonina. Despite his awkwardness around women, he wins her heart. But her heart does not stay in the same place for too long. Belisarius is called upon to reconquer an ancient Roman colony. Fueled by the greatness of his mission, he completely loses sight of his wife, until he finds her in the enemy’s cellar tangled in the arms of another man. The scene is more wretched, gorier than any he had seen on the battlefield. And it is one that he cannot shake. Will the great man of Rome, Belisarius General of the East, buckle under a broken heart? Or will he have the courage to stand, even wounded?
