  • Samagra’s Flagship Event ‘DPG Dialogues’ Unveils 2024 DPG SCoRe to Empower Developer Communities

New Delhi, 09th October 2024: The second edition of ‘DPG Dialogues’, a flagship event by Samagra, a mission-driven governance consulting firm, is currently underway in New Delhi.

The event, themed ‘Thinking, Building & Sustaining Digital Public Goods and Digital Public Infrastructure’, is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Omidyar Network India and conducted in partnership with the global DPG Alliance (knowledge partner) and GitHub (community partner). This year it is bringing together a host of distinguished government and industry leaders and stakeholders from the Digital Public Goods (DPG) & Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) ecosystem for an engaging series of panels and talks.

Sharing his reflections on DPG Dialogues – via video, Sh. Nandan Nilekani said that “This gathering is very important because it brings together practitioners, different points of view—how to create supply, how to create demand, how to make a difference, and how to do things at population scale. Together, we aim to design solutions that are low-cost, frugal in innovation, interoperable, and built for global impact.”

Notable panellists & speakers include Sh. Amitabh Kant (India’s G20 Sherpa), Dr. R.S. Sharma (Chairperson of ONDC and former CEO of NHA and UIDAI), Sh. Abhishek Singh (Additional Secretary MeitY), Sh. Samuel Praveen (Joint Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare), Sh. Saurabh Gaur (Principal Secretary, IT, Andhra Pradesh), Smt. Kavita Bhatia (Senior Scientist, MeitY), Sh. Nand Kumarum (CEO, NeGD), Venkatesh Hariharan (India Representative at Open Innovation Network), Prof. Ramesh Loganathan (IIIT Hyderabad and State Innovation Cell, Telangana), Steve Haley (Partnerships Director, Mojaloop), Tanuj Bhojwani (Head, People+AI), Hemant Adarkar (Tech Advisor, Artha Global), Supriya Sankaran (Co-founder, Agami), among others.

Given that long-term sustainability of DPGs is heavily reliant on the presence of healthy, vibrant, and engaged developer communities, this year the event is also seeing the release of the first DPG SCoRe 2024 – Annual DPG State of the Community Report, which provides a holistic overview of the current state of community-building efforts across India’s DPG landscape, based on surveys with 25 organizations and 300 developers. The report lays out a framework, based on which the participating organizations were benchmarked across various parameters of inputs, outputs and outcomes and can serve as a point-in-time snapshot of the community on which the ecosystem and DPG builders can track the evolution of communities annually.

Among its key findings, the report reveals 64% non-contributors cite lack of awareness as the biggest obstacle to participation. The report also points to the critical need for mentoring support, with 56% of contributors requiring regular guidance. Only 16% of the surveyed organizations meet the criteria for “Community Champions” criteria, i.e. they meet the benchmarks on community size, active contributors, community growth and community contributions to codebase. This reiterates the need for stronger community-building efforts within the ecosystem.

Finally, the event is also showcasing the work of 100+ contributors – both college students and working professionals – selected from 3,000+ applicants from across the breadth and width of the country, who participated over the last 3 months in the one of it’s kind ‘Dedicated Mentoring Programme’ for GovTech and DPG projects sourced from 42 organisations, spanning both coding and design problem statements with population-scale impact.

The event will conclude with an insightful fireside chat featuring Dr. R.S. Sharma (Chairperson of ONDC and former CEO of NHA and UIDAI), who will be sharing insights on the value propositions and motivations of the DPG/DPI ecosystem and the role of the developer communities in addressing global challenges and creating impact at scale.

Gaurav Goel, Founder and CEO of Samagra, emphasised the transformative role of Digital Public Goods in India’s digital revolution, saying, “India has made significant strides in developing DPGs and DPIs. While setting new benchmarks, it is equally important to ensure wide-scale adoption and sustainability. DPG Dialogues is our humble contribution to advancing this movement.”

Remain in London to avenge her husband’s death or reunite with the son she left behind in the Cherokee mountains. Helena Ostenaco Timberlake steps into history in 1786 when she petitions the British crown to return to newly independent America. Was she really the wife of a white soldier, Lt. Henry Timberlake, who had visited the Cherokee in 1762 and the daughter of the Cherokee war chief Ostenaco who had visited King George III? Widely researched and deeply imagined, The Woman with the Stone Knife follows the life of this mysterious woman. She was born Skitty in the Overhills towns of the Cherokee. Following Timberlake, Skitty leaves behind her infant son and makes the arduous Atlantic crossing, only to find herself abandoned in England after Timberlake’s death in debtor’s prison in 1765.

Terry Roberts, author of The Sky Club and That Bright Land says “With authentic and precise historical detail, Dale Neal has brought to life Mrs. Helena Ostenaco Timberlake, a Cherokee woman who is exiled in England after following her British husband back to London. • VTU Transforms Engineering Education in Karnataka with Reconfigurable Instrumentation from Liquid Instruments

VTU Transforms Engineering Education in Karnataka with Reconfigurable Instrumentation from Liquid Instruments

October 08, 2024,Bengaluru, Karnataka, India : Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), one of the largest technological universities in India, established by the government of Karnataka, will begin to integrate reconfigurable instrumentation from Liquid Instruments into its engineering curriculum across more than 150 affiliated colleges, starting this fall. This initiative aims to enhance the learning experience for thousands of engineering students by giving them access to modern tools and technology that encourage hands-on learning.

Liquid Instruments’ Moku platform is built on technology originally developed at NASA for space-based gravitational wave detection. Each compact device uses a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) to deliver a reconfigurable suite of 14 test and measurement instruments, from benchtop essentials like an oscilloscope to advanced tools like a lock-in amplifier. This flexible, digital-first approach enables students to use multiple instruments to engage in real-time experimentation across diverse topics, from digital signal processing to control systems.

Dr. R. Sundaraguru, head of electronics and communication engineering at Sir M. Visveshwaraiah College of Engineering in Bengaluru, praised the adaptability and efficiency of the Moku platform.

“It is excellent in all functions,” he said. “It will be easy to operate and very much useful to students.”

Traditionally, such instruments have been limited to advanced research labs due to space and cost constraints, leaving undergraduate students to rely on simulation tools. With comprehensive API support and the ability to configure a range of multi-instrument test setups in a single device, Moku technology helps bridge the gap between theory and practice.

“We’re excited to equip Indian students with state-of-the-art tools to accelerate their education,” said Daniel Shaddock, co-founder and CEO of Liquid Instruments. “With access to advanced equipment normally restricted to high-end R&D labs, students are now free to fully explore how signals take form, evolve, and interact with the physical world. This approach helps students gain practical skills that are essential in today’s workforce, especially in India, where the growing technology sector continues to drive the economy.”

To ensure a smooth adoption, Liquid Instruments and regional partners Tessolve and Spruha Solutions will provide educational sessions for faculty members at each college and work to set up learning labs. This training will help professors deploy the new technology while supporting their goal to prepare students for internships and employment opportunities.

“Integrating the Moku platform into VTU’s curriculum will empower the next generation of engineers with cutting-edge tools for a hands-on learning experience,” said Srini Chinamilli, co-founder and CEO of Tessolve. “At Tessolve, we are committed to fostering innovation in education by supporting academia and industry. The collaboration with Liquid Instruments will help both faculty and students unlock new learning opportunities.”

Mahesh Vella, managing partner at Spruha Solutions, echoed Chinamilli’s sentiments.

“Spruha Solutions is dedicated to driving educational advancements powered by technology,” he said. “This collaboration will deliver industry-grade tools to students that will greatly improve their learning experience and prepare them for future challenges.”

The integration of Moku technology at VTU marks a milestone in Liquid Instruments’ goal to equip students with the tools they need to succeed in fast-growing engineering fields. Following the adoption of the Moku platform in Karnataka — also known as the Silicon Valley of India — discussions are underway with universities in the neighbouring states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to further expand the platform’s reach.

  • Manasthali’s 5-Day Annual Festival Launches, Highlighting Mental Health in Schools

Manasthali’s 5-Day Annual Festival Kicks Off; Inaugural Session Emphasizes Importance of Mental Health at School LevelNew Delhi, 7th October 2024: Manasthali, one of the city-based leading mental health and wellness organizations, has launched its 3rd edition of Mannotsava-Mann Ka Utsav online by bringing together educators, mental health professionals, and community leaders to address the critical topic of mental well-being for five consecutive days. The inaugural session, held on 5th October, emphasized the growing need for mental health awareness and support at the school level, aiming to foster a more supportive environment for students across all age groups.

The festival kicked off with the auspicious lamp-lighting ceremony and set the tone for the Mannotsava with a keynote address that underlined the growing need to integrate mental health support right from the school to the workplace. The event opened with a warm welcome by Manasthali’s Founder and Director, Dr Jyoti Kapoor, who emphasized the urgency of creating a robust framework for mental health awareness from an early age.

Speaking at the session, Dr. Kapoor remarked, “When we talk of mental health at workplace, we somehow focus on corporate work places and miss out on the very foundation of our society’s work culture which are educational institutions especially schools. Schools are where young minds are nurtured, yet mental health is often overlooked. Schools can play a vital role in promoting mental health and well-being by providing a safe and supportive environment not just to students but also teachers and non teaching staff .With rising stress levels, teachers are not in happiest work environment which has a direct impact on quality of education being imparted. We must prioritize mental well-being and create safe spaces for teachers as well to express their emotions, seek help, and thrive holistically.”

Mrs Neetu Pahuja, who has been in the education field for over two decades, was the panellist of the inaugural session. She said, “Students come from varied backgrounds in schools and to have a safe and supportive environment, teachers should ensure that they develop a bond with their students. Schools have started taking many initiatives for the happiness of the students. We have prohibited corporal punishment in the school, banned certain words (which were earlier used by teachers), and introduced a child-centric teaching & learning process. We are making sure that in any activity, students’ participation is more so that a child shouldn’t lose his/her enthusiasm and can stay away from stress. Schools are organising PTMs more frequently to understand parents’ mindset also. But a gap exists when it comes to giving support to the supporter, in this case the teacher who is under constant scrutiny from parents as well as school administration , at times making it difficult for them to do their job well.

Apart from daily live sessions with stalwarts in various professional fields, Manasthali is organising an online panel discussion upholding the World Mental Health Day theme of prioritising mental health at workplace, bringing together illustrious panelists including Dr Rajiv Gupta, Director cum CEO, Institute of Mental Health, UHS Rohtak; Dr Hitesh Khurana, Professor and Unit Head, PGIMS, Rohtak; Ms Aishwarya Raj, Clinical Psychologist, AIIMS, New Delhi; Dr. Shambhavi Das, Music therapist, mental health Coach, Founder – MANONAAD centre for music therapy; Dr Richa Dhamija, Dental Surgeon, Clinical Hypnotherapist, Founder HopeNest; Ms. Preeti Singh, Asst Director General at NARDECO, Founder- Sattva Nation and Ms. Aashima Madan, Principal Consultant, Professional Services at SAP, Bengaluru who will share their views on the psychological trials and triumphs at workplace. The insights from session will be made available on various online portals which will help in developing strategies to create happier work spaces.

Manasthali is committed to raising awareness about mental health and providing support services for individuals and organizations. Every year, they organise Manotsava to provide a platform for the stakeholders of the mental health ecosystem to share their thoughts about the pressing issue of mental health. Through various initiatives, including counseling, workshops, and public events, Manasthali aims to break the stigma surrounding mental health and foster a culture of understanding and empathy. With a mission to inspire meaningful change and promote healthier work environments, Manasthali’s festival is open to individuals, companies, and mental health professionals alike.
