  • Apollo Institute of Medical Sciences Hosts ‘White Coat Ceremony’ for Class of 2024

Hyderabad, 25 November 2024Apollo Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (AIMSR) Hyderabad; hosted the White Coat Ceremony, for the MBBS Class of 2024 students, at the RNR Auditorium, Jubilee Hills, today. Chief Guest Dr. Rooma Sinha, Honorary Professor, Gynecology, Apollo Hospitals; presented the White Coats to students on the occasion. Ms. Aparna Reddy, COO, AIMSR; Dr. K. Manohar, Dean, Apollo Institute of Medical Sciences & Research; along with the faculty from the Institute and parents of students, were present to catch a glimpse of the momentous occasion.

Speaking on the occasion Dr. Rooma Sinha said, being a medical student is a life changing event, the two most important attributes to be a doctor are intelligence and hard work, and you have both, because of which you are here. One thing I believe very much, and you must inculcate from today that you are the best advocate for your patient, you need to live up to the trust your patient comes to you with. You need to give him the best advice that you can, if you can’t collaborate with someone and give the best advice, which leaves an impression that you are their best advocate. When you converse with the patient be calm and confident for the patient to trust in what you are doing. Patients don’t need sympathy, they want someone who empathizes with their problem and tries to find a solution for it, therefore empathy with the patient is critical. Honesty is an attribute we need to imbibe, if you don’t know what the patient is suffering from, don’t do what you know, make sure the patient gets the right treatment, the right advice, your honesty will come back to you, if the patient gets better with your advice, they will remember you for life time, that’s the respect a doctor earns in his life, no other profession has that privilege. Be passionate about what you are doing, medicine won’t work without passion.

White Coat Ceremony is a memorable experience for students taking their initial steps into the noble profession of Medicine, by joining the medical school. One hundred and fifty students of the 2024 batch of the Apollo Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, were welcomed into the medical fraternity by the faculty and were ceremonially cloaked with their white aprons. The students dressed elegantly in white, later took the Hippocrates oath, traditionally sworn at graduation.

Dr. K. Manohar said, the white coat ceremony marks the beginning of a student’s medical career. This phase needs the utmost attention from each student to lay a strong foundation for the medical career ahead. What we are doing at Apollo is different from any other college in the state. We are the first and the only institute to comply with the CBME curriculum in India and we introduced last year the taking up of proposal of research by the students in the first year itself, they go for data collection with the help of the mentor in the second phase and write the paper in the third year, so that you have good experience of doing some original research work in the field, this will be helpful in the wonderful program designed by NMC called family adoption program. Right from the first phase you are exposed to the society and people and develop a rich experience of communicating and understanding the disease profile in the society, which helps to formulate the problems the society is facing. These experiences will pave the way for brighter future for the students. Medicine is not like other streams, the day when you cease to read, your practice may come to an end, studying is an ongoing process, learning doesn’t stop with fetching a degree, till we die we need to continue updating our knowledge.

Ms. Aparna Reddy said, as you begin your medical journey I urge you to remember the oath you take today, remember the commitment you make to uphold the high standards of professionalism, to respect the autonomy and dignity of the patients and to provide compassionate and evidence based care.

  • Innovative Biodiversity Initiative Announced by NTU Experimental Forest and BioPlus at COP29

    National Taiwan University

BAKU, AZERBAIJAN,25th November 2024 — The 29th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP29) opened in Baku, Azerbaijan, focusing on climate financing to support developing nations in their transition to net-zero emissions. Representing Taiwan, the National Taiwan University Experimental Forest (NTUEF), led by Director Professor Ming-Jer Tsai and Professor Chun-Han Ko, was once again invited by the World Climate Foundation (WCF) to host a landmark announcement on the “Coalition for Rainforest Nations” stage in the COP29 Blue Zone. This event marked a pivotal moment for the Asian Biodiversity Credit Scheme – BioPlus, reaffirming its leadership in biodiversity conservation and innovative financing solutions.

The Call to Action: Addressing Biodiversity Loss:
Biodiversity loss is accelerating at an alarming rate. According to the WWF’s 2024 Living Planet Report, global wildlife populations have declined by 73% since 1970. These staggering figures underscore the urgency of addressing the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity degradation.

To tackle these challenges, NTUEF, WCF, and BioPlus Co. signed an International Strategic Cooperation Agreement on November 16, 2024. This partnership aims to develop commercially viable ecosystem solutions for the global climate financing market. During the signing ceremony, Jens Nielsen, Chairman of the WCF, praised the BioPlus initiative: “The Asian Biodiversity Credit Scheme – BioPlus sets a new global benchmark with its scientific rigor, transparency, and international certification. It represents the future of biodiversity action and financing.”

The announcement was met with resounding applause, highlighting the collaboration’s potential to deliver impactful biodiversity conservation outcomes.

Leveraging 120 Years of Scientific Data:
Nielsen emphasized that NTUEF’s extensive database, spanning over a century, provides a solid foundation for business engagement in biodiversity preservation. This collaboration focuses on meeting international MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification) standards, ensuring businesses have access to reliable data for informed decision-making. The partnership demonstrates the essential role of science in addressing global environmental challenges.

Inspirational Keynote at the World Climate Summit (WCS):
On November 17, Professor Tsai delivered a keynote address at the World Climate Summit (WCS) titled “Asian Biodiversity Credit Scheme – BioPlus.” His presentation emphasized the urgent need for scientifically validated methods to monitor, report, and verify biodiversity conservation efforts. Tsai also highlighted the importance of engaging Indigenous Peoples, Local Communities (IPLCs), and academic institutions in advancing biodiversity research and fostering business applications.

The keynote was widely acclaimed as one of COP29’s most impactful contributions, resonating deeply with leaders from industry, government, academia, and civil society.

A Collaborative Vision for the Future:
Professor Tsai expressed gratitude to the stakeholders who supported the initiative after COP28 in Dubai, including early adopters such as E.Sun Financial Institution, Cathay Financial Institution, and conservation organizations like the Hima Foundation and Pure Green Foundation. He announced plans to collaborate with six experimental forests across Asia to develop innovative solutions to the interconnected crises of climate change and biodiversity loss.

Concluding his speech with the rallying cry, “Asian Biodiversity Credit Scheme – BioPlus, Go, Go, Go!” Professor Tsai called on the global community to unite in building a sustainable future.

  • Eco-Philosophy & Eco-Dharma Provide Pathways For A Sustainable Future

The World Eco-Philosophy Summit coinciding with the 34thWorld Environment Congress  was organised at India International Centre New Delhi on November 21, 2024 by the Indian Institute of Ecology and Environment, New Delhi jointly with World Academy of Higher Education and Development, World-AHEAD and Global Peace Foundation India with the theme “Harmonizing Humanity and Nature: Wisdom, Practice, and Pathways for a Sustainable Future”. The Summit was aimed to emphasize the need for a holistic approach that integrates intellectual inquiry, ethical frameworks, and actionable strategies for ecological restoration.

    Eco-Philosophy & Eco-Dharma Provide Pathways For A Sustainable Future

The Summit was inaugurated by Her Excellency Ms. Harisoa Lalatiana Accouche, the High Commissioner of Seychelles and was graced by the honoured presence of Mr. Ulrik Jorgensen, Head of Chancery from the Embassy of the Kingdom of Denmark and Ms. Shivani Wazir Pasrich, Chairperson Commonwealth Society of India and was attended by a large gathering of intellectuals and young inspired students of colleges and international schools.

In his opening remarks the Summit Chairman Prof. Priyaranjan Trivedi said “This Summit aims to create a transformative dialogue between ancient wisdom and modern ecological consciousness. This convergence of ideas, rooted in ethical living and sustainable development, seeks to explore how philosophical traditions and spiritual practices can address the pressing environmental challenges of the 21st century”. Interconnectedness is one of its central tenets of Eco-philosophy, asserting that all life on Earth is bound in an intricate web of relationships. Eco-Philosophy emphasizes the intrinsic value of nature, reminding us that the well-being of each organism depends on the health of the entire ecosystem encouraging us to respect rivers, mountains, forests, and wildlife not merely for their utility to us but for their inherent role in the ecological balance. Finally, eco-philosophy promotes an ethic of responsibility, suggesting that as sentient beings with the capacity for foresight, humans have a moral duty to protect and preserve the ecosystems that support all life.

Eco-Dharma builds upon eco-philosophy by bringing ethical and spiritual dimensions into the way we live and act in relation to nature. Drawing from the concept of dharma — a term in Indian spiritual traditions that refers to one’s moral duty, responsible behaviour and conduct or purpose, Eco-Dharma defines an ecological duty that encompasses not only human beings but also all living entities and the planet Mother Earth itself. Eco-Dharma encourages us to adopt a path of non-violence (ahimsa) toward the natural world, minimizing harm to other beings and ecosystems and ordains us to use the natural resources most judiciously and with a sense of responsibility towards conservation and protection of natural harmony and ecological balance, akin to Aparigriha, meaning there by consuming only as much as required and possessing as much as necessary and no more. By practicing eco-dharma, we are called upon to align our daily choices with an ethic of compassion, mindfulness, and reverence for life.

Emphasising the importance of the Summit eminent academician Vice Chancellor of Amity University Gurugram Prof. P.B. Sharma, who is also the President of W-AHEAD and the past President of AIU said “The current ecological crisis is a result of our mindful exploitation of natural resources, unsustainable lifestyles, rampant consumerism, and a disconnection from the natural world. While technological advancements and policy interventions are essential, they must be underpinned by a deeper philosophical reorientation to make our policies and technological advancement, in true sense protector of the interest of man and Mother Nature”. We need science and technology innovations that integrate the ethical and moral dimensions to create technologies of conscience and reorient advancement of science towards creating a more responsible human society.

The Summit was being organized at a time when the whole world community is looking for lasting solutions for peace, harmony, happiness and good health for all along with sustainable development that should protect the interest of man and that of Mother Nature. We all are called upon to submit to the clarion calls of Net Zero Emission compliance by 2050 or even earlier and to take the global challenge of climate change head on and with utmost sincerity and human consciousness work to accomplish the 17 SDGs by 2030. This tall order of our commitment requires us to be the noble citizens of Planet Mother Earth and work with devotion and unconditional commitment to the practice of Eco-Dharma as our guiding force and Echo-Philosophy as our guiding principle, said Prof. Sharma while presenting his Keynote on the theme of the Summit.

Eco-philosophy and Eco-Dharma are to be the foundations for a sustainable future of the global humanity, opined the experts who included Dr. Markandey Rai, Chairman of Global Peace Foundation-India, Prof. S.N. Pandey, Chancellor, International University Nagaland, Dr. Abdul Kalam and Dr Sunil Abrol Chairman and Vice Chairman of World Confederation of Productivity Sciences (India), Dr HRP Yadav, Professor and Head Environmental Engineering at Amity University Gurugram. Dr. AK Merchant, Managing Trustee of Lotus Temple Delhi, Principals of Delhi University that included Gargi College, Maitreyi College and a good number of teachers and students from international schools in Delhi and NCR of Delhi.

Let us lead by example and together embark upon the path of peace, harmony and hope built upon the founding principles of Eco-Philosophy and Eco-Dharma, forging a sustainable future for generations to come.
