Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will arrive in India on December 15, marking his maiden visit to the neighbouring country after winning the polls a few months ago.

The Sri Lankan leader will be visiting India from December 15 to 17.

“This will be the first bilateral visit of President Disanayaka to India after the recently concluded presidential and parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka,” read a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs.

The Sri Lankan President will meet his Indian counterpart Droupadi Murmu, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and discuss bilateral issues of mutual interest.

“President Disanayaka will also participate in a business event in Delhi to promote investment and commercial linkages between India and Sri Lanka. Further, he will visit Bodh Gaya as part of the visit,” read the MEA statement.

The Indian government described Sri Lanka as the country’s closest maritime neighbour in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and said it holds a central place in Prime Minister Modi’s vision of ‘SAGAR’ (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.

During India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s visit to Sri Lanka in October, he invited President Dissanayake to India.

Jaishankar also met Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya during his trip to the Island Nation.

The EAM also met former President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Leader of SJB, Sajith Premadasa.

  • South Korea’s Parliament votes to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over martial law imposition

South Korea’s Parliament on Saturday voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol, just days after he triggered a political crisis in the country by imposing the short-lived martial law.

This is the second time Yoon Suk Yeol faced the impeachment proceedings on the same issue.

Following his impeachment, he will not be able to exercise his powers until the decision is adjudicated by the country’s Constitutional Court.

Yoon’s People Power Party (PPP) decided shortly before the proceeding to take part in the vote but opposed the impeachment. The result, however, showed 12 PPP lawmakers likely broke from their party line to vote in favour of impeachment, reported Yonhap News agency.

The first attempt to impeach the President failed last week when nearly all PPP lawmakers boycotted the vote.

The second impeachment motion against him was introduced on Thursday.

The impeachment resolution was sent to the Constitutional Court, which will decide whether to reinstate Yoon or remove him from office, the news agency reported.

The impeachment trial could take up to 180 days.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who will take over as the acting President, said he will try to stably manage the state affairs.

“I will give all my strength and effort to stably manage state affairs in this difficult time,” he was quoted as saying by Yonhap.

Kang Sun-woo, a lawmaker with the Democratic Party, told CNN Saturday that the “great democracy of South Korea will survive and will be born again” after the impeachment.

South Korea witnessed political instability on December 3 when Yoon Suk Yeol had imposed martial law and even sent soldiers to the parliament.

The lawmakers fought past troops to enter the parliament building and vote down the decree.

A large number of people celebrated on the streets of Seoul after the National Assembly voted to impeach Yoon Suk Yeol.

“I am relieved that some votes in favour of the motion were cast by members of the ruling People Power Party,” a citizen in his 50s told Yonhap News Agency.

“Having this many people in Daegu come out on the streets and demand impeachment means that its passage was just a matter of time, if it hadn’t been passed today,” he said.

The Indian government recently shared that 86 nationals were either attacked or murdered in different countries in 2023, a significant rise from the data recorded in 2022.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the highest number of attacks on Indians occurred in the USA.

The data was shared by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh in the Parliament while giving his reply to a question raised by Lok Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak.

MoS Kirti Vardhan Singh said the number of Indians attacked in 2021 was 29 and spiked to 57 in 2022.

“The safety and security of Indians abroad is one of the foremost priorities for the Government of India. Our Missions and Posts remain vigilant and closely monitor any untoward incident. Such incidents are immediately taken up with the concerned authorities of the host country to ensure that the cases are properly investigated and the perpetrators are punished. These issues are also raised during meetings with Government officials of the countries concerned, including at the highest levels as appropriate,” the MEA quoted the lawmaker as saying.

The data shared by the Indian government showed the highest number of attacks were reported from the US at 12, while Saudi Arabia and the UK accounted for 10 each.

Singh provided the figure while answering a question from Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Kumar Pathak.

  • IndiGo flights to Mumbai, Delhi depart with 400 passengers stranded at Istanbul Airport for 2 days

As per latest reports, flights to India’s national capital, Delhi, and financial capital, Mumbai, have finally departed. While IndiGo officials have apologised for the delay, passengers have come hard on the airline company.

The delay was a result of a technical snag, reports said. The Istanbul to Delhi flight, which was scheduled to take off at 8.10 pm on December 12, was initially delayed to December 13 at 1.30 pm. Passengers complained they were left at the facility with little information or support from IndiGo staff.

Similarly, the Istanbul-Mumbai flight was originally set to depart at 8.15 pm on December 12. This was later pushed to 11.00 pm on the same day, and revised further to 10 am on December 13.

Soon, angry passengers took to social media to report the issue and vent their anger.

Many also called for refunds, which some questioned the airline’s behaviour, stating that the airline’s customer care wasn’t reachable.

IndiGo, on its part, blamed everything on the technical issue, while stating that stuck customers were provided with refreshments and accommodation, where possible. In its official statement, the airline said: “Due to technical issues, IndiGo flights from Mumbai and Delhi to Istanbul experienced delays. This led to cascading delays in the return sectors. All necessary steps were taken to ensure customers were apprised, and they were provided with refreshments and accommodation, where possible. We regret the inconvenience caused to customers and appreciate their understanding and patience.”

This incident doesn’t bode well for the India’s largest airline. In the 2024 global rankings released by AirHelp, a European Union claims processing agency, IndiGo ranked 103rd out of 109 airlines.
