  • Amid annual political blame game, toxic smog engulfs Delhi, over 200 flights delayed

Like an annual ritual, Delhi is engulfed by toxic smog as air quality remained in the “severe” category at the onset of winter in the national capital as people struggled to breathe and flights were delayed, media reports said.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi was 432, which falls in the 'severe' category, at 6 am on Thursday.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi was 432, which falls in the ‘severe’ category, at 6 am on Thursday.

It has slightly improved since it was recorded ‘very severe’ at 452 at 11 pm on Wednesday.

More than 200 flights have been delayed owing to the poor visibility at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, which houses the residence of the Prime Minister.

Entrepreneur Aman Bansal, who seems frustrated at the situation, writes on X, “Delhi is choking. I don’t know who is going to save us. People in power should be made to stand outside in this air to make them understand the effects.”

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who returned from Wayanad elections to Delhi, posted on X, “Coming back to Delhi from Wayanad where the air is beautiful and the AQI is 35, was like entering a gas chamber. The blanket of smog is even more shocking when seen from the air. Delhi’s pollution gets worse every year.

“We really should put our heads together and find a solution for cleaner air. It’s beyond this party or that, it’s practically impossible to breathe especially for kids, elders and those with respiratory issues. We just have to do something about it.”

    Political slugfest over Delhi pollution

Though the residents of Delhi are in no respite from the pollution for years, political slugfest between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which governs the city and country respectively, has seen no pause.

Slamming the AAP government, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said as quoted by India Today, “We are standing at Kartavya Path, and the AQI here is 474. We can’t even see India Gate. “This is due to the inefficiency of the AAP government, which is focused only on event management, not environmental planning.”

Delhi’s Environment Minister Gopal Rai said on Thursday, “The central government will have to take action to control pollution. Releasing a press release from the party won’t help.”
Earlier, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi had blamed the BJP-ruled states- Haryana and Uttar Pradesh- for allegedly polluting Yamuna river deliberately

‘We should not become most polluted city of the world’

“We should not become the most polluted city in the world,” the Supreme Court was told during a hearing on the air pollution that has choked the national capital Delhi.

Amicus curiae and senior advocate Aparajita Singh told this to the top court bench comprising Justice Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih.

“We are in severe mode today. They (Delhi government) have not yet taken any pre-emptive measures yet. Nothing has been done. We should not become the most polluted city in the world,” advocate Singh told the top court as quoted by Bar and Bench.

    ‘No religion promotes pollution’

During a hearing on the Diwali firecrackers ban violation, the Supreme Court had wailed on the authorities’ failure to take measures to curb bursting of crackers. The court had said every citizen has the right to live in a pollution-free environment. The right has been guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution, asserted the top court.

“Prima facie we are of the view that no religion promotes any activity which promotes pollution or compromises with health of people,” the Supreme Court had said as quoted by Bar and Bench.

  • Study shows carbon emissions touch record high in 2024

Study finds carbon emissions have touch record highs in 2024.

A new research has shown global carbon emissions from fossil fuel have reached a record high figure in 2024.

The research was conducted by the Global Carbon Project science team.

The 2024 Global Carbon Budget projects fossil carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions of 37.4 billion tonnes, up 0.8% from 2023.

Despite the urgent need to cut emissions to slow climate change, the researchers say there is still “no sign” that the world has reached a peak in fossil CO2 emissions.

With projected emissions from land-use change (such as deforestation) of 4.2 billion tonnes, total CO2 emissions are projected to be 41.6 billion tonnes in 2024, up from 40.6 billion tonnes last year, read the University of Exeter website.

Over the last 10 years, fossil CO2 emissions have risen while land-use change CO2 emissions have declined on average – leaving overall emissions roughly level over that period.

This year, both fossil and land-use change CO2 emissions are set to rise, with drought conditions exacerbating emissions from deforestation and forest degradation fires during the El Niño climate event of 2023-2024.

With over 40 billion tonnes released each year at present, the level of CO2 in the atmosphere continues to rise – driving increasingly dangerous global warming.

The research team included the University of Exeter, the University of East Anglia (UEA), CICERO Center for International Climate Research, Ludwig-Maximilian-University Munich, Alfred-Wegener-Institut and 80 other institutions around the world.

“The impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly dramatic, yet we still see no sign that burning of fossil fuels has peaked,” said Professor Pierre Friedlingstein, of Exeter’s Global Systems Institute, who led the study.

“Time is running out to meet the Paris Agreement goals – and world leaders meeting at COP29 must bring about rapid and deep cuts to fossil fuel emissions to give us a chance of staying well below 2°C warming above pre-industrial levels.”

Professor Corinne Le Quéré, Royal Society Research Professor at UEA’s School of Environmental Sciences, said: “Despite another rise in global emissions this year, the latest data shows evidence of widespread climate action, with the growing penetration of renewables and electric cars displacing fossil fuels, and decreasing deforestation emissions in the past decades confirmed for the first time.”

Dr Glen Peters, of the CICERO Center for International Climate Research in Oslo, said: “There are many signs of positive progress at the country level, and a feeling that a peak in global fossil CO2 emissions is imminent, but the global peak remains elusive.

“Climate action is a collective problem, and while gradual emission reductions are occurring in some countries, increases continue in others.

“Progress in all countries needs to accelerate fast enough to put global emissions on a downward trajectory towards net zero.”

Professor Friedlingstein added: “Until we reach net zero CO2 emissions globally, world temperatures will continue to rise and cause increasingly severe impacts.”

How long until we pass 1.5°C of global warming?

This study estimates the remaining “carbon budget” before the 1.5°C target is breached consistently over multiple years, not just for a single year. At the current rate of emissions, the Global Carbon Budget team estimates a 50% chance global warming will exceed 1.5°C consistently in about six years.

This estimate is subject to large uncertainties, primarily due to the uncertainty of the additional warming coming from non-CO2 agents (e.g., CH4, N2O, aerosols).

However, it’s clear that the remaining carbon budget – and therefore the time left to meet the 1.5°C target and avoid the worst impacts of climate change – has almost run out.

At least 35 people died and 43 others were injured after a man rammed his car into people in Zhuhai city of China on Tuesday, media reports said on Tuesday.

The incident took place around 7:48 p.m. Monday, when citizens were exercising at the sports centre, reported Xinhua news agency.

The driver of the car was identified as a 62-year-old man. His surname was identified as Fan.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident was allegedly triggered by Fan’s dissatisfaction with the property division outcomes over his divorce, according to media reports.

“Officers found Fan self-harming with a knife in the vehicle, immediately stopped him and sent him to hospital for treatment. Due to severe neck injuries, Fan is currently unconscious, still undergoing emergency treatment and unable to be interrogated,” police said in the statement as quoted by CNN.
Fan has been detained on suspicion of “endangering public safety,” according to the statement.

The incident occurred ahead of the civil and military airshow which is scheduled to be held in the city from November 12 to November 17.

In October, police arrested a man after he stabbed and injured five people outside an elementary school in Beijing.

  • Exposure to air pollutants in pregnancy, early childhood could raise autism risk: Study

Exposure to air pollution during periods critical for brain development — the latter trimester of pregnancy or early childhood — could significantly heighten autism risk, according to a study. Researchers reviewed previously published studies and found that common air pollutants, including fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen oxides, can trigger complex biological processes that could affect brain development.

Notably, the number of pregnancies fathered was not associated with biological aging among same-aged cohort men, which implies that it is something about pregnancy or breastfeeding specifically that accelerates biological aging.
    Representational image. Photo Courtesy: Unsplash

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder in which a child displays repetitive behaviour and affected social skills. Early signs, such as difficulty in non-verbal communication and avoiding eye contact, can show as early as between one and two years of age.

“Different kinds of neurological disorders, including autism spectrum disorder, can be associated with this environmental factor,” Haitham Amal, from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and senior author of the study published in the journal Brain Medicine, said.

“The timing of exposure appears crucial, with heightened vulnerability during prenatal development and early childhood when critical neurodevelopmental processes occur,” Amal said.

The study also suggested that “individuals with genetic predisposition to (autism) may be more vulnerable to the harmful effects of air pollution exposure”, according to Amal.

The researchers identified key biological routes through which air pollution can influence the risk of developing autism, including nitrosative stress triggered by exposure to nitric oxide.

Other such biological routes involved inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain, and an interference with the endocrine (hormone) system, according to the study.

The team also found that smaller particles, especially PM2.5 as well as nitric oxide products, can cross the placenta and affect the brain development of the foetus — a result that was of “particular concern”.

The finding raised important questions about protective measures for pregnant women in highly polluted areas, the authors said.

A 2021 study, by Harvard University’s School of Public Health and published in the journal Environmental Research Letters, found that the risk of autism spiked by 64 percent with exposure to 10 micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic metre of air during early childhood. The risk was found to heighten by 31 percent for the same exposure during pre-birth periods, especially during the third trimester of pregnancy.
