Hamas is likely to release 33 hostages during the first phase of the emerging ceasefire agreement between Israel and Palestine that is being finalised by negotiators in Qatar, media reports said, a move that may halt the violence in the region ongoing for the past 15 months.

Hamas reportedly holds 94 hostages out of the 251 people it had taken from Israel during its October 7, 2023 attacks.

Israel believes that most of the 33 hostages to be released in the first phase of the deal are alive, a senior Israeli official told reporters as quoted by CNN on Monday.

The senior Israeli official said the parties appear to be on the verge of an agreement and that Israel is prepared to implement the deal once it has been inked.

A Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations told BBC that the terms of a deal between Israel and Hamas for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages are being finalised.

Meanwhile, US President Joe President, whose term will end soon, said his administration is working hard to try and reach a deal to bring hostages home.

“My Administration is working hard to try and reach a deal to bring hostages home, end this war, and bring immediate relief to Palestinians in Gaza,” Biden posted on X.

Biden recently held a discussion with both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani over the deal recently.

According to reports, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani is meditating on the negotiations.

As per a White House released statement, during his discussion with Netanyahu, Biden stressed the immediate need for a ceasefire in Gaza and the return of the hostages with a surge in humanitarian aid enabled by a stoppage in the fighting under the deal.

Biden thanked Qatari Emir Thani for his leadership and praised Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani for his mediating role throughout the process.

A diplomat close to the negotiations told CNN a final round of proximity talks to finalise any issues was scheduled to take place in Doha on Tuesday.

The UN Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory called on Sunday for an end to the war in Gaza to ensure a better future for children there and the entire region.

Muhannad Hadi, who is also the Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, made the appeal during a visit to Gaza City, where he met with representatives from non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

The senior official also visited Holy Family Church, where he recorded a video message on the church steps, surrounded by displaced children.

“Needless to say that churches, mosques, civilians, and all civilian infrastructure, must be protected. They can only be protected by the end of this war; by a ceasefire,” he stressed.

Parents of Captain Anshuman Singh, who died in a fire incident in Siachen in July 2023, have asked the government to consider changes in the Indian Army’s ‘next of kin’ (NOK) policy. As per the policy, financial assistance is provided to the family members in case of an Army personnel’s death.

According to reports, after a cadet or officer joins the Indian Army, his parents or guardians’ names are then recorded in the NOK but after the cadet or officer gets married, under Army rules, the name of the person’s spouse is recorded as the person’s next of kin instead of the parents.

Singh received the posthumous Kirti Chakra, the country’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award.

Singh’s parents Ravi Pratap Singh and Manju Singh said their daughter-in-law has left their home and received most of the entitlements following the death of their son.

Ravi Pratap Singh said the only thing he has is the photo of their son.

“The criteria of the NOK is not correct. It should be changed. I have spoken to Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh over the issue,” he told TV9 Bharatvarsh.

“In our case, our daughter-in-law does not stay with us anymore. The marriage lasted for five months and they did not have a child. We only have a photo of our son which is hanging on the wall. We have nothing else,” he said.

The deceased soldier’s wife Smriti Singh and mother Manju Singh recently received the posthumous Kirti Chakra from President Droupadi Murmu.

Ravi Pratap Singh said Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has said he will raise the issue with Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

“I don’t want parents to suffer like us in future,” Manju Singh told the news channel.

Captain Anshuman Singh was posted with the 26 Punjab as a medical officer in the Siachen Glacier area.

He died in a fire tragedy in Siachen last year.

GENAI

About 73 per cent of Indian organisations plan to harness generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) within the next 12 months to enhance security measures and align IT objectives with broader business goals, a new reportsaid on Monday.

However, only 8 per cent of organisations showed high confidence in effectively implementing GenAI technologies, according to the exposure management company Tenable.

“Despite the rise of AI, many Indian businesses are still developing their technology maturity and often lack the resources or skills needed to properly create, train, and implement AI, as well as maintain high standards of data governance,” said Nigel Ng, Senior VP, Tenable APJ.

The report surveyed 826 IT and cybersecurity professionals, including 52 Indian respondents conducted in October 2023.

Moreover, the report identified two major challenges hindering Indian organisations from utilising or optimising AI technologies — a lack of technological maturity (71 per cent) and uncertainty about the applicability of AI within their operations (54 per cent).

An aspect of concern highlighted by the report was the perception of GenAI as a greater security threat than an opportunity among 40 per cent of Indian organisations.

Internal misuse of GenAI emerged as a major concern, with 67 per cent expressing worry about potential misuse within their organisations. Additionally, 60 per cent said that providing sensitive data to open-source GenAI puts them at risk of intellectual property theft.

Despite facing significant challenges in adopting AI technologies, cybersecurity and IT leaders in India were optimistic about the potential benefits of GenAI.

Around 31 per cent believe GenAI can enhance preventive threat response, 42 per cent think it can automate security measures, and 40 per cent feel it can improve actionability, according to the report.

“The future holds great promise in leveraging GenAI’s evolutionary capabilities for preventive cybersecurity measures. This shift moves the needle on merging IT and security objectives and places importance on prioritising AI governance and using the technology responsibly,” Ng said.

Shah is the third very high-profile persona to be featured in a fake video in latest days. Bollywood superstars Aamir Khan and Ranveer Singh have both been victims of AI-generated deepfake videos, during which they have been seen to be making political statements for or towards a political get together. Both have clarified that they made no such statements.

As the Union Ministry of Home Affairs sought motion on the particular person(s) who circulated the fake Amit Shah video, Delhi Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) yesterday.

Reportedly, within the video, Shah is seen talking in favour of scrapping reservation quotas for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to which Shah belongs, alleged that the video was doctored by the Congress, the highest Opposition get together, with a purpose to distort what the house minister had stated at a political rally.

Media stories quoted BJP spokesperson Amit Malviya as saying, “Congress is spreading an edited video which is totally fake and has the potential to trigger large-scale violence. Home Minister Amit Shah spoke about eradicating the unconstitutional reservation given to Muslims, on the premise of faith, after decreasing the share of SCs/STs and OBCs. This fake video has been posted by a number of Congress spokespersons. They should be ready for authorized penalties.”

The video was extensively shared, together with on official accounts linked with the Congress. The Home Ministry criticism to the police has recognized all or a lot of the accounts that shared the video, giving hyperlinks and handles for the aim of police investigation.

Now the case is reportedly within the arms of the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) Unit of the Delhi Police Special Cell.
