The Indian physicist who discovered how stars live and die while on a ship voyageIANS

It was a cosmic conundrum that had left the world’s foremost physicist puzzled, while a leading astronomer’s efforts to help him complicated matters further, but this teenage Indian student, using just pen and paper, devised a solution to the issue while sailing to the UK in 1930 to take up a scholarship to study physics.

The issue was of the life — and death — of stars, and led to the development of the concept of black holes, long before their existence was confirmed by observation. Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, who would go on to become a prominent theoretical physicist and a Nobel Laureate, was among those involved in determining the fate of the celestial bodies across the universe — when their internal reactions come to a halt.

The issue arose when Albert Einstein formulated his Theory of General Relativity, his geometric construct of the fundamental force of gravitation, refining Isaac Newton’s laws of gravity. However, he was not able to reconcile the field equations with the theory’s mathematical implications. Reading his published papers in 1915 in a trench on the Eastern Front amid World War 1, astronomer Karl Schwarzchild sought to help his colleague — ending with the unsettling idea that the universe did not run in a clockwork fashion, as long believed, but more severely with stars and planets warping spacetime. There could also be some stars, tiny but massively dense, he contended, that could warp the spacetime fabric to such an extent of generating a strong gravitational pull that could even prevent light from escaping.

Third of NASA’s four space-based “Great Observatories” was named after him and is still scanning the cosmosIANS

Schwarzchild’s theory, which postulated the theoretical possibility of a “singularity”, a point of all-powerful spacetime due to a minute but hugely dense mass, languished for years as it seemed too outlandish for the scientists of the time.

Chandrasekhar (1910-95), born on this day (October 19) in Lahore, would go on to solve the issue, though established scientists — including some he looked up to — disputed and scorned his theory, but he would be finally vindicated. In the process, he would not achieve fame in this world only, but his name would go on to be associated with happenings spanning the sub-atomic world to the infinite cosmic expanse.

On his ship voyage in July 1930, Chandrasekhar had no interest in the majestic oceans but chose to dwell on the question of a star’s fate. This did not entail the observation of the heavens, but going deep into the equations of Einstein and Schwarzchild, amid the current knowledge about white dwarfs – the extinguished but dense remnants of long-dead stars.

Beginning with their physical characteristics, he began to try to work out the eventual fate of different-sized stars after their collapse. While the Sun would collapse and turn into a white dwarf, things changed dramatically when it came to bigger stars. His calculations suggested that during their collapse, the immense gravitational force would lead to their atoms falling inwards at velocities nearing the speed of light, crushing each other irredeemably to the extent that matter would vanish into its own gravitational well!

This, Chandrasekhar held, would be the fate of any star whose mass was 1.44 times that of the Sun.

He published his model in 1930, and presented a full solution at the Royal Astronomical Society meeting in 1935. However, renowned English astronomer Arthur Eddington openly criticised and mocked Chandrasekhar’s models, including just after his Royal Astronomical Society speech. Years later, Chandrasekhar, who always respected his senior colleague despite their academic acrimony, confessed that Eddington felt “that nature must conform to what he thought was right.”

Chandrasekhar’s theory eventually gained acceptance, leading to the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1983, “for his theoretical studies of the physical processes of importance to the structure and evolution of the stars.”

He was not only among the handful of Indian or Indian-origin Nobel Laureates, but also the relative of an earlier winner. Sir C. V. Raman, who won the Physics Nobel in 1930, was his paternal uncle. While there are seven cases of father and son Nobel Laureates and one mother and daughter, Sir C. V. and Chandrasekhar are the only uncle-nephew pair.

Chandrasekhar would go on to recite India’s first Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore’s “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high..” at the Nobel Banquet.

His name also lives on in the star stability — which also became supporting evidence for the existence of black holes — and is known as the “Chandrasekhar Limit”, as well as in Chandrasekhar Friction, Chandrasekhar Polarisation, Chandrasekhar’s H-function, Velikhov–Chandrasekhar instability, Chandrasekhar–Fermi method, Chandrasekhar Tensor, Chandrasekhar’s X- and Y-function, Chandrasekhar’s Variational Principle and several others, given his contribution to other areas of physics.

And then, the third of NASA’s four space-based “Great Observatories” was named after him and is still scanning the cosmos.

Long-term outlook for Indian stock market remains robust amid geopolitical risksIANS

Despite a sustained selling pressure from the foreign institutional investors (FIIs) amid geo-political tensions this week, the long-term outlook for the domestic market remains robust with a stability in growth and a pickup in capex, experts said on Saturday.

Apart from heavy FII selling, muted Q2 earnings expectations and elevated valuations also acted as a headwind for the market this week.

The market watchers said they expect the market to be range-bound in the short term with mixed bias, while investors should turn more sector- and stock-specific in such a time.

Focus will be on large caps and growth areas like staples, agriculture, FMCG, consumption, power, digital, and infra. Buy-on dips will be the strategy on a short- to medium-term basis.

According to Rajesh Bhosale, equity technical analyst, Angel One, the market remains in a consolidation phase, with little change in chart structure.

“While prices tested the lower end of the trading range and closed near it, a break below 24,900 could open doors for further weakness, potentially testing the 24,700 level. On the upside, resistance is seen around 25,100 followed by the 25,250 level; only a move beyond this range might spark some bullish momentum on the hourly charts,” he explained.

Traders are advised to avoid aggressive bets and be selectiveIANS

On Friday, the Indian stock market bucked the negative trend, as both the Sensex and Nifty indices jumped upwards.

The Sensex closed at 81,224.75 after gaining 218.14 points, or 0.27 per cent, at the end of trading. At the same time, the NSE Nifty closed at 24,854.05 after gaining 104.20 points or 0.42 per cent.

The Nifty Midcap 100 index closed in green at 58,649.15 after gaining 183.20 points or 0.31 per cent at the end of trading. The Nifty Smallcap 100 index closed at 19,077.80 after gaining 11.85 points or 0.06 per cent.

For next week, traders are advised to avoid aggressive bets and be selective.

“It’s also crucial to monitor global factors closely, as they could influence market direction ahead of the weekly expiry,” they added.

Geopolitical tensions and uncertainty ahead of the US presidential election paved the way for haven asset gold to climb a new record high.

Gold prices continued their strong upward momentum, with a sharp rise of Rs 500 in MCX, taking the price to Rs 77,600, supported by Comex gold surging above $2,710.

This robust strength is largely driven by the expectation of ongoing interest rate cuts in the US, with further reductions anticipated in the near future, the experts noted.

The rupee remained flat at 84.05 as the dollar index also held steady around $103.50.

“Despite the broader strength in the dollar, the rupee has managed to stay stable for the time being. Although crude weakness provides some support, the heavy fund outflows are expected to push the rupee further down towards the 84.15-84.25 range in the coming days,” said Jateen Trivedi from LKP Securities.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) increased their selling on Monday and sold equities worth Rs 3,731.59 crore. On the other hand, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) also increased their buying and they bought equities worth Rs 2,278.09 crore on the same day.

According to market experts, “the domestic market experienced a downturn, influenced by a mixed global trend and partial profit-booking”.

“Although declining crude prices are beneficial for the domestic economy, they signal weakening global demand. Additionally, India’s CPI surged driven by food prices, which will delay expected rate cuts,” they noted.

“The India VIX increased by 0.06% to 13.0025, indicating a slight rise in market volatility. While this reflects some caution, the overall low level suggests that market stability persists.” said analysts.

    Indian Designer

15th October 2024: Russia, Moscow Moscow Fashion Week took place from October 4 to 9, showcasing collections from more than 80 designers from different countries, including Russia, India, China, the UAE, Indonesia, Brazil, Costa Rica, and South Africa. One of the highlights was the New Delhi-based brand NITIN BAL CHAUHAN presented by the Fashion Design Council of India, whose show drew considerable attention from the audience.

NITIN BAL CHAUHAN presented by the Fashion Design Council of India, first showcased his work in Moscow in March. His return to Russia underscores the strengthening partnership between Moscow Fashion Week and the Fashion Design Council of India. We can look forward to seeing more Indian designers in upcoming seasons of Moscow Fashion Week.

Sunil Sethi, Chairman of the Fashion Design Council of India, shared, “India’s presence in the Russian fashion market presents immense potential. Russian consumers are increasingly gravitating towards unique, handcrafted fashion pieces that tell a story, and India’s rich heritage of textiles, embroidery, and design perfectly aligns with this trend. Indian designers can leverage platforms like the BRICS+ Fashion Summit to enter the Russian market with collections that blend tradition and contemporary appeal.”

NITIN BAL CHAUHAN, presented by the Fashion Design Council of India, showcased a collection at Moscow Fashion Week that prominently featured a variety of folds, pressed fabrics, and intricate designs. The trending colors included pale yellow, coral, and vibrant blue. Like many other participants of Moscow Fashion Week, the Indian brand embraced futurism and avant-garde styles, creating a collection that was both edgy and elegant. The models’ makeup was especially striking, they walked the runway with bold red lips and blue paint flowing from their eyes.

The Indonesian brand RAEGITAZORO made its appearance at Moscow Fashion Week, with a collection crafted from recycled industrial fabric remnants. Russian brands enchanted the audience, with St. Petersburg’s IANIS CHAMALIDY embracing grunge aesthetics and Moscow’s Loom by Rodina reinterpreting Russian traditions for contemporary fashion trends.

In addition to the runway shows, guests at Moscow Fashion Week had the chance to explore a market featuring local brands, attend educational lectures, and enjoy the World Fashion Shorts festival – a showcase of short films about fashion. The film marathon featured selections from the USA, the Philippines, Mexico, and other countries.

Running parallel to Moscow Fashion Week, the BRICS+ Fashion Summit took place in the Russian capital, attracting delegates from over 100 countries. At the conclusion of the BRICS+ Fashion Summit, leaders from fashion associations across more than 50 countries signed a memorandum to form the BRICS International Fashion Federation. The new federation seeks to establish new centers of influence, strengthen international connections, boost industry sustainability, and provide a new generation of fashion talents with opportunities for growth.

The new fashion season has reinforced Moscow’s status as a key hub for fashion communications. Moscow Fashion Week offered a platform for both emerging and established designers to showcase their work, while the BRICS+ Fashion Summit served as a significant venue for sharing insights among emerging markets.

Goyal said that in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mission to make India a developed nation by 2047,  as the Indian economy grows from US$3.5 trillion to US$35 trillion, it offers European businesses the chance to participate and benefit.

He congratulated FEBI for taking the initiative for being a voice of Europe and added that FEBI should act as a two way bridge between EU and India. The Minister highlighted the role of FEBI as a body to take trade engagement between the two sides to the next level by ensuring that the concerns of businesses of both parties are addressed.

Speaking about the EU-India Trade and Technology Council (TTC),  Goyal called for mutual support in business practices and trade. He identified key areas of engagement for the council including green technology, clean energy, global value chains, strategic technology missions, and semiconductor missions.

The Minister cited the successful business expansions of Tata Group under his leadership. The Minister noted that he was a true friend of expanding business between the countries.

The Federation of European Business in India (FEBI) was launched on Saturday, highlighting the strong economic ties between India and the European Union.

According to the Ambassador of the EU to India, Herve Delphin, the European bloc remains India’s largest trading partner, with over 4,000 European companies operating in India.
