  • Battery swapping can be a game changer for Indian commercial vehicles

SUN Mobility’s solution stands out with its modular and scalable battery packs, designed to cater to a wide range of commercial vehicles—from 7-metre buses to 13.5-metre buses and commercial vehicles ranging from three tonnes to 55 tonnes.

India aspires to be energy-independent by 2047, the centenary year of its freedom. In this pursuit, decarbonisation of the commercial vehicle segment, especially heavy-duty buses and trucks, will be imperative. Occupying less than five per cent of the total vehicle fleet, heavy-duty buses and trucks account for about half of transport-related emissions.

Electric vehicles (EVs) have emerged as a leading technology in decarbonization, particularly in smaller segments like two and three-wheelers. However, the challenge of electrifying heavy commercial vehicles (HCVs) remains formidable due to their demanding energy requirements and operational complexities.

Globally, battery swapping has emerged as a promising solution for electrifying heavy electric vehicles (HEVs).

Electric buses have seen significant traction in regions like China and Kenya. BasiGo in Kenya and Shenzen bus group in China procured buses without pre-fitted batteries. In Germany, the eHaul project while Ample and Yamato in Japan are also conducting dedicated swapping pilots for HEVs.

In India, electrification of vehicles has been driven by a suite of policy support, fiscal subsidies, and the entry of new-age startups. However, the focus on HEV electrification has been limited. The recently launched PM E-bus Sewa and the State Transport Undertaking (STU) focused bus electrification through FAME subsidy is concentrating on the urban bus fleet, which has a miniscule share of the Indian bus market. Fleet operators in India face several challenges in transitioning to electric vehicles as around 90 per cent of the country’s overall bus market is operated by fragmented private fleet owners, the majority of who have less than five buses and do not have access to subsidies and finance.

For commercial vehicles ranging from three tonnes to 55 tonnes, electrification is hindered owing to challenges like high upfront cost, longer charging times, battery obsolescence, and range anxiety.

There is a limited and uneven distribution of charging and battery-swapping stations across India, particularly outside major urban areas. This limits the practicality of EVs for long-distance or intercity travel, where reliable access to charging is critical.

Battery Swapping is the best bet:

To this end, battery swapping can be a game-changing opportunity for electrification for buses and trucks. It provides myriad benefits namely: zero downtime, increased productivity by 30 per cent, alleviated battery obsolescence concerns, reduced anxiety about battery performance and vehicle range, and improved affordability of HEVs.

First, battery swapping improves the affordability of heavy electric vehicles (HEVs) by significantly reducing the upfront cost.

Second, it alleviates the customers’ challenge of battery obsolescence by disassociating the battery from the vehicle. The customer need not worry about the high battery replacement cost over time, the battery performance, and the evolving battery technologies itself.

Third, battery swapping offers a transformative solution to one of the most significant challenges in the adoption of electric vehicles: long charging times and the associated high-power demand from the grid.

Fourth, the ability to quickly swap batteries eliminates concerns like longer waiting time and a dense battery swapping network will eliminate range anxiety. The flexibility to swap the vehicle at ease is crucial for the heavy-duty segment, where reliability and uptime are paramount.

Fifth, once the battery is disassociated from the vehicle, the upfront cost is reduced, and the obsolescence related to technology and its performance is also mitigated as it is taken care of by the battery swap operator. This makes it a lucrative option for financial institutions to fund at par with the ICE vehicles.

In addition to the above benefits, SUN Mobility’s solution stands out with its modular and scalable battery packs, designed to cater to a wide range of commercial vehicles—from 7-metre buses to 13.5-metre buses and commercial vehicles ranging from three tonnes to 55 tonnes. This versatility offers fleet operators a unified energy solution across their diverse vehicle portfolio, reducing the need for multiple battery types and simplifying maintenance and logistics.

These measures backed by appropriate policy push will open the floodgates for EVs in India. By integrating battery swapping into the electrification strategy for heavy-duty trucks and buses, India can significantly reduce its carbon footprint, enhance energy security, and position itself as a global leader in green mobility.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who came to the United States of America on a State Visit in June 2023, is set to return in September 2024 and address a huge gathering of the Indian diaspora.

To be held on September 22 at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Uniondale, New York state, the event is titled ‘Modi & US Progress Together’.

The venue has a capacity of 15,000, but more than 24,000 Indian Americans have signed up for the event, which is being organised by the Indo-American Community of USA (IACU).

PM Modi is also scheduled to address the high-level UN General Assembly session in New York on September 26, according to a provisional list of speakers issued by the UN.

The IACU said in a statement that registrations for the event in Uniondale, Long Island, had come through 590 community organisations — all of them had signed up as ‘Welcome Partners’ — from across the United States.

While Indian Americans from at least 42 states were expected to attend, the response had been particularly strong from the tri-state area (usually taken to be New York-New Jersey-Connecticut), it said.

“We’re committed to ensuring [that] as many people as possible can participate in this historic event,” said a key organiser of the event. “We’re going to do our best to expand seating arrangements and co-ordinate with our Welcome Partners to prioritise final seat allocations to those who will confirm they expect to attend.”

The IACU said that the ‘Modi & US’ event “promises to be a significant gathering celebrating the interconnected diversity of the Indian-American community”.

Attendees and participating organisations will include a wide range of religious communities, including members of the Jewish, Zoroastrian, Jain, Christian, Sikh, Muslim, and Hindu communities.

They would also represent a significant cross-section of India’s diverse languages, including Hindi, Telugu, Punjabi, Tamil, Bengali, Malayalam, Gujarati, and others, said the IACU.

In addition to an address by PM Modi, the event will showcase cultural performances and appearances by prominent Indian Americans in business, science, entertainment, and the arts.

A not-for-profit organisation, the Indo-American Community of USA (IACU) fosters understanding of and unity within the Indian-American community through cultural events and public programmes.

Previous Indian-American community events featuring PM Modi

Earlier this month, sources told the Press Trust of India (PTI) that preparations were in full swing for the community event in Long Island, coming 10 years after Modi addressed a massive community gathering at the famed Madison Square Garden in New York City in September 2014. That was just months after he had first taken charge as the Prime Minister of India and visited the city to attend the annual UN General Assembly session.

In 2019, the Indian prime minister addressed the mega community event ‘Howdy Modi’ at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, where he was joined by former President Donald Trump.

This year’s visit to the US comes just weeks before the country goes to the presidential polls in November, with a race to the top office between Trump and Democratic Presidential nominee Kamala Harris, the first woman of black and Indian heritage.

The high-level General Debate of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly will take place from September 24-30 this year. As per the provisional list of speakers for the General Debate issued by the UN on Monday, India’s “Head of Government” is scheduled to address the session in the afternoon of September 26.

The list is not final and the UN releases updated provisional lists of speakers in the weeks leading up to the session to reflect any modifications in attendance.

Modi took oath in June 2024 as the Prime Minister of India for a historic third term. He had last addressed the annual UNGA session in September 2021.

The Indian prime minister also visited the UN headquarters on June 21 last year, leading the historic Yoga Day commemoration at the North Lawn of the world body’s headquarters, before heading to Washington DC for a State Visit hosted by President Joe Biden.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will present his report before the start of the General Debate, followed by an address by the President of the 79th session of the General Assembly.

Guterres is also convening the ambitious Summit of the Future at the UN Headquarters during the high-level week, with the action days slated for September 20-21 and the Summit scheduled for September 22-23.

World leaders will convene at the United Nations to adopt the ‘Pact for the Future’, which will include a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations as annexes.

“The Summit is a high-level event, bringing world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future,” the UN said.

Foreign investors infused over Rs 1 lakh crore in Indian debt market in 2024 so farIANS

Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPI) have pumped over Rs 1 lakh crore into the Indian debt market in 2024 so far due to the country’s inclusion in JP Morgan’s Emerging Market Government Bond Indices in June this year.

FPIs remain bullish on the Indian debt market and they have invested Rs 11,336 crore so far in August.

According to National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) data, Rs 1,02,354 crore has been invested by FPIs in the Indian debt market since the beginning of 2024.

Foreign investors put in Rs 11,366 crore in August so far, Rs 22,363 crore in July, Rs 14,955 crore in June and Rs 8,760 crore in May.

Foreign investors are putting money in the debt market, but are pulling out from the equity markets.

FPIs have pulled out Rs 16,305 crore from Indian equity markets since the beginning of August.

The reasons for this are believed to be Yen Carry Trade, fear of recession in the US and ongoing geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East.

However, foreign investors have pumped Rs 19,261 crore into Indian equity markets in 2024 so far.

Foreign investors are putting money in the debt market, but are pulling out from the equity marketsIANS

The reason for strong buying interest in the debt market by foreign investors is the inclusion of Indian bonds in the JP Morgan Emerging Market Bond Index in June this year.

Indian bonds will have 10 per cent weightage in that index.

The weightage of India’s government bondswill be gradually increased in this index in a phased manner from June 28 to March 31, 2025, i.e. by one per cent each in 10 months.

JP Morgan announced the inclusion of Indian bonds in GBI-EM in September 2023.

There are many other reasons for the sharp rise in the foreign inflow in the Indian debt market, experts said, “a high growth rate, stable government, reduction in inflation, financial discipline by the government.”

India’s GDP growth rate was 8.2 per cent in FY 2023-24. It is expected to grow at the rate of 7.2 per cent in the current financial year.
