India on Friday said it has formed a committee that will monitor the current situation on the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB) in the wake of the violence that the neighbouring nation is witnessing and even led to the fall of the former PM Sheikh Hasina-led government.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah posted on X: “In the wake of the ongoing situation in Bangladesh, the Modi government has constituted a committee to monitor the current situation on the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB).”

Shah said the committee will maintain communication channels with their counterpart authorities in Bangladesh to ensure the safety and security of Indian nationals, Hindus, and other minority communities living in the country.

“The committee will be headed by the ADG, Border Security Force, Eastern Command,” Shah said.

Signalling the beginning of a new era after 15 years of Sheikh Hasina’s regime, Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus took oath as the head of the interim government in Bangladesh on Thursday.

“I will uphold, support and protect the constitution and will perform my duties sincerely,” Yunus said at the swearing-in event.

The 84-year-old, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for pioneering microcredit and microfinance, which he put into action through the Grameen Bank, was sworn in hours after he returned to Dhaka from Paris, where he had been undergoing medical treatment.

The oath was administered by President Mohammed Shahabuddin at his official residence, Bangabhaban.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his best wishes to Yunus and said India is hoping for an early return to normalcy in Bangladesh, which would also ensure the safety of Hindus and other minorities.

“My best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus on the assumption of his new responsibilities. We hope for an early return to normalcy, ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities. India remains committed to working with Bangladesh to fulfill the shared aspirations of both our peoples for peace, security and development,” PM Modi wrote on X.

Former PM Sheikh Hasina was forced to quit and escape to India on Monday amid violent protests which left hundreds of people dead in the country.

  • Paris Olympics: Indian men’s hockey team win bronze, Sreejesh retires

The Indian Men’s Hockey team made history on Thursday as they clinched the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 to bring joy to over 1.4 billion countrymen after two days filled with disappointments. Following the win, goalkeeper and former captain PR Sreejesh retired from the sport.

Harmanpreet Singh led from the front, scoring both goals as India came back from behind to beat Spain 2-1 in the bronze medal clash.

Harmanpreet (30th, 33rd minutes) scored twice off penalty corners after Spain’s captain, Marc Miralles, caught everyone off guard by giving his team an early lead in the 18th minute with a penalty stroke.

India bounced back quickly, showing some serious mental toughness to grab another spot on the podium at the world’s biggest sporting event. This comes just three years after they broke a 41-year medal drought by winning bronze in Tokyo.

Spain had taken the lead through Miralles in the first quarter before the Indian skipper brought his team back into the contest in the second quarter.

Harmanpreet put India ahead in the third quarter after which the former world champions managed to keep their one-goal cushion, seeing off some nervy moments and late attacks from the Spanish team to end up victorious.

India managed to give a near-perfect send-off to legendary goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who had announced his retirement from international hockey before the Olympics began.

The 36-year-old Sreejesh came up with some excellent saves throughout the tournament and managed to leave his mark in the final game of his illustrious career that spanned 18 years.

This is India’s second successive Olympic bronze after Tokyo 2020 and 13th medal overall in the Summer Games. India, which is the most successful hockey team in history, has won 8 golds, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals at the Olympics.

This is the second time after 1968 and 1972 Games that India has bagged back-to-back medals at the Olympic Games.

Indian Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Wednesday informed the Lok Sabha that the country’s Indian Olympic Association has lodged a strong protest with the United World Wrestling over the disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat from the Olympics which left the nation heartbroken.

“She was disqualified after her weight was found to be 100 gms more than 50 kgs,” the Minister said.

He further said: “The Indian Olympic Association has lodged a strong protest with the United World Wrestling (UWW).”

“IOA President PT Usha is currently in Paris and PM Narendra Modi spoke to her and asked her to take the necessary steps,” he said.

The Minister said Phogat was provided with all necessary facilities, including a personal trainer, for her training.

Vinesh, who was competing in the 50 kg freestyle wrestling category, is set for a disqualification for crossing the weight limit by 100 grams.

Though she normally competes in the 53 kg category, Vinesh brought down her weight to 50 kg for the Olympics.

As per reports, Vinesh skipped meals, trained hard and spent sleepless nights to fit in the criteria.

The efforts went in vain after the Olympic Committee refused to give more time to Vinesh despite requests from the Indian officials.

She was disqualified on the second day of weigh-in.

India on Tuesday basked in joy after Vinesh defeated Yusneylis Guzman Lopez of Cuba by 5-0 to enter the Olympics 2024 women’s wrestling 50kg final.

She stunned world no. 1 and defending champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the Round of 16, before edging out Ukraine’s Oksana Livach in the quarterfinals.

Vinesh was set to take on Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzman Lopez for a place in the final.

Indian Embassy Rescues 14 Youths from Laos Cyber-Scam CentresIndian Embassy Rescues 14 Youths from Laos Cyber-Scam Centres

In a recent development that underscores the perils of fraudulent overseas job offers, the Indian Embassy in Laos has successfully rescued and repatriated 14 Indian youngsters. These individuals were ensnared in cyber-scam centres operating in the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the Bokeo province of the Southeast Asian country. This rescue operation, announced on August 7, is the latest in a series of similar efforts by the Embassy.

The rescued individuals were lured to Laos under the guise of lucrative job offers. These offers, often for positions such as ‘Digital Sales and Marketing Executives’ or ‘Customer Support Service’, were made by dubious companies involved in call-centre scams and crypto-currency fraud. The recruitment process involved simple interviews and typing tests, with the promise of high salaries, hotel bookings, return air tickets, and visa facilitation.

However, the reality that awaited these individuals was far from the rosy picture painted by the recruiters. The victims were illegally transported across the border into Laos from Thailand, where they were initially promised employment. Once in Laos, they were held captive and forced to work under harsh and restrictive conditions in the Golden Triangle SEZ.

In response to these alarming incidents, the Indian Embassy in Laos has been proactive in issuing repeated warnings and advisories to Indian workers considering employment in Laos. The Embassy has urged individuals to exercise extreme caution and verify the credentials of recruiting agents and companies before accepting any job offers in Laos.

The advisory also highlighted the legal implications of such fraudulent activities, stating that Visa on Arrival in Thailand or Laos does not permit employment and the Lao authorities do not issue work permits to Indian nationals coming to Laos on such visas. It further warned that those convicted of human trafficking crimes could face sentences of up to 18 years in prison in Laos.

The Embassy’s advisory detailed instances of Indian nationals being taken hostage by criminal syndicates involved in illegal activities. These individuals were subjected to strenuous working conditions, constant physical and mental torture, and were often forced into illegal work.

This issue is not isolated to Laos. Similar incidents have been reported in other Southeast Asian countries. For instance, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in India recently made the sixth arrest in a human trafficking and cyber fraud case, where recruited youth were sent overseas to work in alleged fake call centres involved in online crimes. The investigation revealed an inter-State organised human trafficking syndicate with international linkages.

In another instance, the Tamil Nadu government’s Commissionerate of Non-Resident Tamils’ Welfare warned of strict legal action against agents/agencies sending people abroad for work without being registered with the Union government. This highlights the widespread nature of the problem and the need for coordinated international efforts to combat it.

The Indian Embassy in Laos, in its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of Indians, continues to work tirelessly with Lao authorities to rescue and repatriate individuals caught in such situations. The Embassy’s efforts serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of fraudulent job offers and the importance of exercising caution when considering overseas employment. The incidents underscore the need for potential job seekers to remain vigilant and thoroughly verify the credentials of overseas job offers.

  • Sheikh Hasina sought approval to come to India at very short notice: Indian EAM S Jaishankar tells Parliament on Bangladesh crisis

Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday informed the Rajya Sabha that Sheikh Hasina requested approval to come to India at a ‘very short notice’ in the wake of the anti-government violence in Bangladesh which led to her ouster and escaping from the South Asian nation.

Hasina resigned and arrived in India after running away from her country, where she served as the longest Prime Minister and even returned to power for another term by winning the general polls in January.

Sources told The Indian Express she was taken to a “safe house”, and is likely to travel to the United Kingdom (UK).

Speaking in the Upper House of the Indian Parliament, Jaishankar said: “Demonstrators converged in Dhaka despite the curfew. Our understanding is that after a meeting with leaders of the security establishment, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina apparently made the decision to resign.”

He said: “At very short notice, she requested approval to come for the moment to India. We simultaneously received a request for flight clearance from Bangladesh authorities. She arrived yesterday evening in Delhi.”

Indian government is in touch with nationals currently present in Bangladesh

He said New Delhi is in touch with the Indian community members in Bangladesh.

He said 9,000 students are still present in Bangladesh.

“We are in close and continuous touch with the Indian community in Bangladesh through our diplomatic missions. There are an estimated 19,000 Indian nationals there, of which about 9,000 are students,” he said.

“The bulk of the students have already returned to India in the month of July on the advice of the High Commission. In terms of our diplomatic presence, in addition to the High Commission in Dhaka, we have Assistant High Commissions in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna and Sylhet,” the EAM said.

“It is our expectation that the host government will provide the required security protection for these establishments. We look forward to their normal functioning once the situation stabilizes,” he said.

Jaishankar said the situation in Bangladesh is still evolving.

Hasina arrived at Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad after fleeing Bangladesh amid political turmoil.

Remarks on the situation of minorities in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina’s ouster and ongoing violence

Jaishankar said the Indian government is monitoring the situation of minorities in Bangladesh following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina with reports emerging that several Hindu houses and temples have been targeted by fundamentalists in the neighbouring country.

“There are reports of initiatives by various groups and organisations to ensure their protection and well-being. We welcome that, but will naturally remain deeply concerned till law and order is visibly restored. Our border guarding forces have also been instructed to be exceptionally in view of this complex situation,” Jaishankar said.

Several unverified videos are currently circulating on social media where Hindu community members could be seen attacked by fundamentalists.

Two Hindu councillors were among the 100 people killed in Sunday’s violent clashes across Bangladesh.

According to The Daily Star report, mobs targeted Hindu houses and business establishments in 27 districts of the country.

    What happened on Monday?

Earlier on Monday, the 76-year-old, five-time Prime Minister, was forced to resign from her position after more than 300 people died in violent protests over a quota for government jobs in that country.

The Bangladesh Army, which gave Sheikh Hasina 45 minutes to resign after her government couldn’t control the violence, took charge of the country.

In a televised address Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman said the military will form an “interim government” and told protesters to stand down.

“There is a crisis. I have met Opposition leaders and we have decided to form an interim government to run this country. I take all responsibility and promise to protect your life and property. Your demands will be fulfilled. Please stop the violence,” the Army chief said.
