  • GRP, RPF will have to buy train tickets for travelling during duty – Indian Railway

GRP and RPF personnel will have to obtain valid permission or purchase tickets for train travel. Just carrying identity cards is not enough, the Railway Claims Tribunal has said while dismissing a compensation plea filed by a constable.

He had claimed that he was on official duty when he fell from the train. The Ahmedabad bench of the tribunal also pointed out the casual attitude of the railways with regard to the circular for issuing duty card passes to GRP personnel who have to travel frequently.

The constable had demanded compensation of Rs 8 lakh

GRP constable Rajesh Bagul had filed a petition in the tribunal seeking compensation of Rs 8 lakh with interest from the Railways. He claimed that he was on duty on the day of the accident. According to the petition, Bagul had gone to Surat Railway Police Station for official duty on November 13, 2019.

He was returning from Surat to Bharuch by Surat-Jamnagar Intercity train. During this, he fell at Palej station, due to which he suffered serious injuries to his left leg and a part of the leg had to be amputated.

    The tribunal gave its verdict

Rejecting the petition, Tribunal Member (Judicial) Vinay Goyal said that Bagul has failed to produce any valid travel permission to prove his official travel claims. He said that in the absence of a valid travel permission, the applicant cannot be considered a genuine traveler. Along with this, he stressed that the Railways should follow the circular issued regarding granting valid travel permission to GRP and RPF officers.

  • SGU Highlights Diversity and Inclusion in Medical Education for Indian Future Doctors

India, August 1st, 2024: As India continues to advance its healthcare system, the need for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in medical education has become increasingly important. St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine, located in Grenada, West Indies, is at the forefront of promoting DEI within its academic programs to ensure a more inclusive and effective healthcare system that can benefit diverse populations, including those in India.

The lack of diversity among healthcare practitioners can limit the effectiveness of medical care. When patients are unable to find providers who understand their cultural background, beliefs, or lifestyle, there is a risk of miscommunication and inadequate treatment.

Dr. G. Richard Olds, President Emeritus, SGU, said: “In general, you want your healthcare workforce to resemble the population they serve. Diversity among medical school faculty is also essential since medicine is a mentoring profession.”

Despite global progress in diversifying medical school applicants, medical school faculties often remain predominantly homogenous. This poses a problem for healthcare disparities experienced by underrepresented populations.

Access to healthcare is another critical issue. In India, rural areas often face significant barriers to healthcare services, much like in other parts of the world. Dr. Olds points out that physicians are most likely to practise in areas where they trained or grew up, yet globally, less than five percent of medical students come from rural areas, while a significant portion of the population lives there. This highlights the need for MD programs that support students from diverse economic backgrounds, enabling them to pursue medical careers.

SGU is dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment. The university provides students with cross-cultural experiences and resources, including academic guidance and financial support, to help them succeed. By prioritizing DEI, SGU aims to produce culturally competent physicians who are well-prepared to meet the needs of a diverse patient population, including those in India.

For Indian students seeking a holistic medical education that emphasizes DEI, the immersive cultural experiences and diverse student body at SGU can better prepare them for a career in a global healthcare environment.

SGU invites prospective students and stakeholders in India to join its mission to enhance DEI in medical education. For more information on the programs and tracks available through its School of Medicine, visit SGU’s website.

  • Bangladesh anarchists tried to create “Sri Lanka-type violence”, says Sheikh Hasina to Indian envoy

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today told the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka that “anarchists” were behind the recent mayhem in her country and that the aim was to topple her government.

Bangladesh recently made headlines around the world for the violent clashes between the police and mostly student protesters. The latter demanded an end to the quota system that reserved 30 per cent of government jobs for relatives of 1971 freedom-fighters.

“Actually, they (the anarchists) planned to create Sri Lanka-type violence and oust the government,” said Sheikh Hasina, when Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma called on her at her official residence Ganabhaban.

Sri Lanka was hit by an unprecedented economic crisis in 2022 when inflation skyrocketed, foreign reserves dwindled, and the country ran short of fuel, food and medicines. The economic turmoil led to months of public protests that eventually toppled the government of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Earlier in the day, Hasina said that her government had sought co-operation from the United Nations and other international organisations to conduct “a fair and proper investigation” into the recent nationwide violence, in order to punish the real culprits involved in the attacks.

Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Md Nayeemul Islam Khan briefed the reporters after the meeting between Hasina and Verma.

Hasina, who was re-elected for a record fourth term in January 2024, said that the recent movement for quota reform was “not a [normal] movement at all”; rather “at one stage, it had turned into almost a terrorist-like attack”. She was quoted as saying this by the state-run BSS news agency.

The Bangladesh unrest in mid-July killed at least 150 people, injured several thousands, and damaged major government installations.

The protests subsided after the apex Appellate Division of unitary Bangladesh’s Supreme Court on July 21 ordered a massive quota reform, keeping only 7 per cent of reserve posts instead of the existing 56 per cent.

The government subsequently issued a Gazette notification in line with the order, saying that 93 per cent of jobs would be open to candidates on merit.

India had described the violent protests in Bangladesh as an “internal” matter of the country.

While talking about bilateral ties with the neighbouring countries, Sheikh Hasina said that the doors of Bangladesh were open for strengthening connectivity with India, Nepal, and Bhutan.

The Indian High Commissioner also offered his condolences for the loss of life and property during the protests. He welcomed the steady restoration of normalcy and gradual resumption of economic activities in Bangladesh.

Verma said that India, as the closest neighbour, always gave its support to the government and people of Bangladesh for a vision of progress and prosperity.

The successful visit of Prime Minister Hasina to India had led to substantial outcomes that consolidated past achievements and created a blueprint for future co-operation, added the envoy. “And based on the two countries’ national development visions — Vision 2041 for Bangladesh and Vision 2047 for India — both countries entered into a new era of co-operation,” he said.
