IndiGo flights to Mumbai, Delhi depart with 400 passengers stranded at Istanbul Airport for 2 days

It was a relief for 400 Indian flyers who were stuck at Turkey’s Istanbul Airport for at least two days after their flights — belonging to the Indian airline company IndiGo — were delayed.

As per latest reports, flights to India’s national capital, Delhi, and financial capital, Mumbai, have finally departed. While IndiGo officials have apologised for the delay, passengers have come hard on the airline company.

The delay was a result of a technical snag, reports said. The Istanbul to Delhi flight, which was scheduled to take off at 8.10 pm on December 12, was initially delayed to December 13 at 1.30 pm. Passengers complained they were left at the facility with little information or support from IndiGo staff.

Similarly, the Istanbul-Mumbai flight was originally set to depart at 8.15 pm on December 12. This was later pushed to 11.00 pm on the same day, and revised further to 10 am on December 13.

Soon, angry passengers took to social media to report the issue and vent their anger.

Many also called for refunds, which some questioned the airline’s behaviour, stating that the airline’s customer care wasn’t reachable.

IndiGo, on its part, blamed everything on the technical issue, while stating that stuck customers were provided with refreshments and accommodation, where possible. In its official statement, the airline said: “Due to technical issues, IndiGo flights from Mumbai and Delhi to Istanbul experienced delays. This led to cascading delays in the return sectors. All necessary steps were taken to ensure customers were apprised, and they were provided with refreshments and accommodation, where possible. We regret the inconvenience caused to customers and appreciate their understanding and patience.”

This incident doesn’t bode well for the India’s largest airline. In the 2024 global rankings released by AirHelp, a European Union claims processing agency, IndiGo ranked 103rd out of 109 airlines.

Mahindra to contest ‘BE 6e’ Trademark against IndiGo in court, renames electric SUV brand to ‘BE 6’

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has announced its decision to rename its new electric vehicle (EV) brand to ‘BE 6’. This comes amid an ongoing legal battle with InterGlobe Aviation, the owner of IndiGo airlines, over the trademark ‘BE 6e’. Despite the renaming, Mahindra intends to continue contesting IndiGo’s claim in court.

IndiGo, India’s largest domestic airline, has sued Mahindra for using the ‘6E’ branding, which is widely recognized as IndiGo’s call sign. Mahindra argues that the claim is baseless and plans to challenge it vigorously during court proceedings.

“Our priority is ensuring an excellent customer experience as we take our product to the market. We would not like to get distracted from our vision of popularising electric transport in India,” Mahindra stated. The company also expressed disappointment over the conflict, emphasizing that both Indian multinationals should support each other’s growth rather than engage in disputes.

Mahindra has decided to brand its product as “BE 6” to avoid distraction from its core mission. The automaker stressed that IndiGo’s claim, if unchallenged, could set a negative precedent by monopolizing alphanumeric two-character marks, which could restrict other companies across various industries.

The company highlighted past objections from Tata Motors regarding InterGlobe’s use of the IndiGo mark, noting that InterGlobe uses the mark across different industries and businesses. Mahindra unveiled its electric-origin SUVs, the BE 6e and XEV 9e, on November 26, 2024.

Mahindra has applied for trademark registration under class 12 (vehicles) for “BE 6e” and has the “BE” mark registered in the same class, representing its “born electric” platform. The automaker insists that “BE 6e” differs fundamentally from IndiGo’s “6E,” eliminating any risk of confusion due to the distinct industries and styling.

The BE 6e is part of Mahindra’s futuristically designed sports e-SUV lineup, which includes models like BE 5e and BE 7e. Mahindra’s other EV brand, XEV, recently launched the XEV 9e.

Despite the renaming, Mahindra remains committed to contesting IndiGo’s claim and securing its right to the ‘BE 6e’ brand name. The company believes that the dispute should not detract from its mission to advance electric transportation in India.

IndiGo And Mahindra Electric’s ‘6E’ Trademark Battle Goes To Court

The entry-level variants of BE 6e and XEV 9e are priced at Rs. 18.9 lakh and Rs. 21.9 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively

After InterGlobe Aviation, which operates IndiGo airline, filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against Mahindra Electric for using ‘6E’ in its new car, the automaker has contended they do not see any conflict and are engaged in discussions with the budget airline to find an amicable solution.

InterGlobe Aviation filed the trademark infringement lawsuit in the Delhi High Court for using ‘6E’ in its new car called Mahindra BE 6e , which is expected to be released in February. The case will come up for hearing on December 9.

In a statement, Mahindra said that it had announced its electric origin SUVs the BE 6e and XEV 9e on November 26.

“Mahindra has applied for trade mark registration under class 12 (vehicles) for ‘BE 6e’ a part of its electric origin SUV portfolio. We don’t see a conflict as Mahindra’s mark is ‘BE 6e’ not the standalone ‘6E,’” said the automaker. It differs fundamentally from Indigo’s “6E,” which represents an airline, eliminating any risk of confusion. The distinct styling further emphasizes their uniqueness, said Mahindra in its statement.

“We have taken on board the concerns that InterGlobe Aviation Limited have to infringement of their goodwill, which was not our intention. We are engaged in discussions with them to find an amicable solution,” the automaker added. Last week, M&M expanded its electric vehicle portfolio in the country with the introduction of two all-new models. The entry-level variants of BE 6e and XEV 9e are priced at Rs. 18.9 lakh and Rs. 21.9 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively.

The company said that BE 6e comes with a range of 682 km while the XEV 9e features a range of 656 km.

IndiGo refutes report which rated it among world’s worst airlinesIANS

Low-cost airline IndiGo on Wednesday refuted findings of a report which claimed that IndiGo has been ranked among the world’s worst airlines this year.

The ‘AirHelp Score report 2024’ placed the domestic carrier near the bottom at 103rd place out of 109 analysed. The report also ranked Air India at 61st and AirAsia at 94th.

In a statement, IndiGo said that India’s aviation regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), publishes data on airline punctuality and customer complaints monthly.

“IndiGo has consistently scored high on punctuality and has the lowest customer complaint ratio for an airline of its size and scale of operations,” said the airline.

It further stated that the data published in the survey by AirHelp, an EU claim processing agency, “does not report the sample size from India, and neither takes into account the methodology or compensation guidelines used by the global aviation industry – casting a doubt on its credibility”.

“As India’s most preferred airline, IndiGo refutes the findings of this survey and reiterates its promise of on-time, affordable, courteous and hassle-free travel experience for its customers,” said the aviation major.

According to the DGCA data, during the nine-month period (January-September), budget carrier IndiGo carried more than 7.25 crore passengers, clocking a market share of 61.3 per cent, followed by Tata Group-run Air India flying over 1.64 crore passengers with 13.9 per cent share.

With its fleet of more than 380 aircraft, the airline is operating around 2,100 daily flights and connecting over 85 domestic destinations and more than 30 international destinations.

Brussels Airlines, Qatar Airways and United Airlines occupy the top three spots in the AirHelp report.

The annual report by AirHelp, a company specialising in passenger compensation claims, covered data from January to October. It used factors such as global customer claims, on-time performance, and feedback from travellers across 54 countries – assessing aspects like food quality, seating comfort, and crew service – to rank the airlines.

IndiGo takes legal action against Mahindra Over ‘6E’ trademark dispute

India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against Mahindra Electric Automobile Limited. The dispute centers around the use of ‘6E’ in Mahindra’s forthcoming electric vehicle, the Mahindra BE 6E, slated for release in February 2025. IndiGo argues that the ‘6E’ callsign is a crucial part of its brand identity, and its use by Mahindra could lead to consumer confusion.

Why Is IndiGo Suing Mahindra?

IndiGo uses the callsign ‘6E’ extensively for its branding, including services like 6E Prime, 6E Flex, and 6E Add-ons. The airline registered the trademark ‘6E Link’ in 2015, covering various categories such as advertising, airline transport services, and printed materials.

Conversely, Mahindra has recently received approval to register ‘BE 6E’ under Class 12, which pertains to motor vehicles. IndiGo contends that this overlap could dilute its brand identity and mislead consumers.

Current Legal Status

The case was initially presented to Justice Amit Bansal, who recused himself from the hearing. The next hearing is scheduled for December 9, 2024. IndiGo’s legal team, led by Senior Advocate Sandeep Sethi, disclosed that Mahindra has opened discussions to resolve the matter amicably.

Potential Impact of the Case

The outcome of this lawsuit could set a significant precedent for intellectual property rights in India, especially regarding trademark overlaps across different industries. It underscores the increasing challenges companies face in safeguarding their brand identity amidst expanding and intersecting markets.

70 threats have come this week

DGCA, IndiGo conduct validation flight of new navigation tech at Kathmandu airport

DGCA, IndiGo conduct validation flight of new navigation tech at Kathmandu airport

IANS

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Wednesday said it has successfully conducted a validation flight of the Required Navigation Performance with Authorisation Required (RNP AR) procedure at the Kathmandu airport which involved an IndiGo aircraft.

The RNP AR approach, which is a new navigation technology, offers several advantages, including enhanced safety through greater precision accuracy and more stabilised approach.

“Indigo successfully conducted its first flight utilising the RNP AR approach on an A320 aircraft. An all-women inspectors’ team from DGCA and Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal were on board to oversee the validation flight,” said the aviation regulator.

The RNP AR approach reduces operational inefficiencies, such as the need for multiple step-downs in non-precision approaches, and lowers the landing minima.

Pilots must undergo specialised simulator training to operate and conduct RNP AR approaches, and the aircraft must be properly equipped and capable of executing this advanced approach.

According to the DGCA, the key benefits include increased safety in complex environments, enhanced operational efficiency, lower fuel burn and reduced carbon footprint and financial savings through minimised crew and flight time losses.

“This approval underlines DGCA’s commitment to advancing aviation safety standards and operational excellence, ensuring safer and more efficient flights at one of the world’s most demanding critical airports,” said the DGCA.

Late last month, budget carrier SpiceJet was placed under “enhanced surveillance with immediate effect” by the DGCA after passengers were not allowed to board the airline’s flights in Dubai as it had not paid its airport dues.

Based on reports of cancellation of flights and financial stress being experienced by SpiceJet Airlines, a special audit of SpiceJet engineering facilities was conducted which has revealed certain deficiencies,” according to the aviation regulator.

A SpiceJet spokesperson had attributed the cancellations to “operational issues” and said affected passengers were accommodated on subsequent flights or other airlines, or given a full refund.

Indigo launches daily direct flights to culturally vibrant Jaffna from India

IANS

IndiGo, a leading budget airline, has recently launched daily direct flights to Jaffna, a culturally rich city in the northern province of Sri Lanka. This new route marks the 34th international and 122nd overall destination in IndiGo’s rapidly expanding 6E network. The airline’s second destination in Sri Lanka after Colombo, this strategic move is expected to strengthen the cultural and trade ties between India and Sri Lanka, which have been marked by cooperation in the fields of commerce, infrastructure development, and air connectivity.

The significance of this new route cannot be overstated. It is poised to enhance trade and tourism between the two nations, offering a shorter travel time of just 75 minutes from Chennai to Jaffna. Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, emphasized the strategic importance of this route, stating, This short but significant flight is a strategic addition, which is poised to further enhance trade and tourism between India and Sri Lanka.

The demand for travel between Chennai and Jaffna is evident, with over 21,000 passengers flying the route in just nine months last year. The Chennai-Jaffna daily flight is scheduled to depart at 13:55 pm, with a scheduled arrival at 15:10 pm. IndiGo’s new direct flight is expected to provide a timely boost to Sri Lanka’s tourism revival, offering seamless connectivity and tapping into a key market. Jaffna, with its rich history and cultural significance, is a vibrant city that reflects the resilience and diversity of its people. Its vibrant Tamil heritage is reflected in its traditions, festivals, and historical landmarks.

Visitors to Jaffna can explore iconic sites such as the Jaffna Fort, an architectural testament to the region’s colonial past, and the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, a revered Hindu temple that holds both religious and cultural importance. The city’s unique heritage is expected to attract tourists from India and beyond, contributing to the local economy and fostering people-to-people connections.

Beyond its economic impact, this air link will serve as a cultural and social bridge, making it easier for families to reunite, students to access education, and tourists to discover Jaffna’s unique heritage. The company believes that this new route will not only boost tourism but also foster stronger ties between the two nations.

This development is reminiscent of similar historical events where air connectivity has played a crucial role in strengthening ties between nations. For instance, the launch of direct flights between India and the United States in the early 2000s significantly boosted trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between the two countries. Similarly, the introduction of direct flights between India and Australia in 2013 led to a surge in tourism and trade, strengthening bilateral relations.
