An advertisement for state-run Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), that evoked eerie memories of the 9/11 attacks in the USA, triggered a massive row, forcing PM Shehbaz Sharif to order an investigation, media reports said.

The advertisement in question was created to celebrate the resumption of flight service between Pakistan’s Islamabad city and French capital Paris.

The PIA shared the image on X which showed a flight heading towards the Eiffel Tower.

With the French flag in the backdrop, the image was shared with the caption: “Paris, we’re coming today.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar informed the Senate about the premier’s decision, reported The News International.

On 9th September 2001, shocking the world, two planes hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists crashed into Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.

The attack mastermind, Osama Bin Laden, was killed during a military operation in Pakistan’s Abbottabad city on May 2, 2011.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has lifted its ban on Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) from operating in the EU bloc in November last year.

EASA suspended PIA’s authorisation to operate in the EU in June 2020 over concerns about the ability of Pakistani authorities and its Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) to ensure compliance with international aviation standards.

The exploration and production (E&P) segment of India’s oil and gas sector will throw up an investment opportunity of at least $100 billion by 2030, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Thursday.

Addressing the ‘Urja Varta 2024’ at Bharat Mandapam here, he said, “Despite our progress much of our exploration and production potential still lies untapped within India’s 26 sedimentary basins. Despite the abundant geological resources available to us.”

“Our efforts in the past have been far short of what needs to be done in the E&P sector,” he added.

The minister also highlighted that, as of now, 10 per cent of the country’s sedimentary blocks are under exploration. Following the completion of the 10th Open Acreage Licensing Programme (OALP) round, 16 per cent would come under exploration, he added.

The Union Minister said that the government was able to control oil prices due to neutral policies.

The minister also referred to the increased purchases of oil from Russia that have helped India to keep fuel prices under control.

“There was a global turmoil. We could have followed what the West was advising us to do and not sourced oil from a particular country and then oil prices would have shot up,” the minister said.

Finance Ministry notified the GSTR-1A form on July 10, these would be the benefits

New Delhi. There is an important news for traders across the country who file GST returns. The Finance Ministry has notified the GSTR-1A form, which will give taxpayers the option to amend the outward supply or sales return form.

The GST Council last month recommended providing a new optional facility through the GSTR-1A form to allow taxpayers to amend details and/or declare additional details in the GSTR-1 form for a tax period.

However, GSTR-1A has to be filed before filing returns in GSTR-3B for this tax period. The Finance Ministry notified the GSTR-1A form on July 10. Rajat Mohan, Executive Director, business consultancy firm Moore Singhi, said that the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has significantly enhanced the GST compliance framework with the optional facility of GSTR-1A form.

These will be the benefits

He said, “By providing the facility of timely correction, Form GSTR-1A ensures that the correct tax liability is auto-populated in Form GSTR-3B, thereby reducing errors and leading to a streamlined compliance process.”

Abhishek Jain, Head of Indirect Tax and Partner, KPMG, said that the provision to allow correction in GSTR-1 is a welcome move. This will help businesses to prevent unwanted disputes (especially inadvertent errors) arising on regular matching between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B.

Taxpayers with annual turnover up to Rs 5 crore can file GSTR-1 within the 13th day of the end of the quarter, while GSTR-3B is filed between the 22nd and 24th day of the next month. Let us tell you that the GST Council makes changes from time to time regarding the Goods and Services Tax in its meetings. In this, the interests of the customers as well as the traders are also kept in mind.

Two Singaporean Indians jailed for scamming US victims out of a million dollars

Two Indian-origin Singaporean men were sentenced to jail for scamming victims in the United States through at least 50 companies. Two of these Singapore-registered companies received USD 1.063 million (SGD 1.43 million) of scam victims’ money into their bank accounts, and the money was then routed to bank accounts in China and the United Arab Emirates.

Ishan Sharma, 34, was sentenced to four weeks’ jail. He pleaded guilty to two charges under the Companies Act after instigating his friend Kandhiban Letchumanansamy, 36, into not exercising reasonable diligence when the latter was a director at both firms, The Straits Times reported.

Kandhiban was sentenced to a week’s jail. He pleaded guilty to one charge under the same Act after he failed to exercise any supervision over the companies’ affairs.

Court documents did not state how the offences came to light, according to the newsreport.

Stressing that Sharma was the “directing mind” behind these arrangements, Deputy Public Prosecutor Matthew Choo told the court that the offender earned SGD 12,000 in total for his offences linked to the two companies, which received more than USD 1 million from scam victims.

At the time of the offences between 2019 and 2020, Sharma was a chartered accountant.

In 2017, he found out that Kandhiban was unemployed and offered the older man a job at a firm called Karmic Circle, with a monthly salary of SGD 500. As part of the arrangement, Kandhiban had to be listed as a director of incorporated companies. He agreed to the deal.

DPP Choo said, “Kandhiban knew that he was meant to be a ‘silent director’ and would have nothing to do with the operations or activities of the companies.”

Due to his arrangement with Sharma on being a ‘silent director’, Kandhiban became the listed director of more than 50 companies between 2019 and 2020.

Sometime before June 2019, a man known as Aashish Nanda introduced Sharma to Indian national Rahul Batra, the court heard.

Nanda also told Sharma that Batra wanted to incorporate a company in Singapore.

Sharma then corresponded with Batra twice over the phone, before he proceeded with the incorporation of Quartz Resources.

“Ishan (Sharma) and Kandhiban only met Rahul (Batra) in person in June 2019 after the incorporation of Quartz Resources, where Rahul paid (Sharma) SGD 6,000 in cash for the services rendered and for the opening of Quartz Resources’ corporate accounts,” said the prosecutor.

Kandhiban then signed an agreement with Batra to be a nominee director of Quartz Resources. The agreement included a clause stating that Kandhiban should not be involved in the firm’s management and operations.

Quartz Resources was incorporated on June 7, 2019, and Sharma’s home was listed as its registered office address. Kandhiban and Batra were listed as its directors, while Sharma was listed as its secretary.

Later that month, three corporate bank accounts were opened under Quartz Resources’ name, with Batra as their sole signatory.

The DPP said that Kandhiban did not have access to the bank statements, did not request the statements, and did not review the transactions performed through the accounts.

Two of Quartz Resources’ bank accounts later received more than USD 583,000 from five scam victims.

Sharma and Kandhiban went on to commit similar offences linked to Kiora Worldwide, which was incorporated on November 3, 2019.

For this case, the court heard that some time before November 2019, Aashish Nanda introduced Sharma to another Indian national, identified as Suchit Wadhawan.

Sharma met Wadhawan in person only in November 2019, after the incorporation of Kiora Worldwide. The Indian national paid him SGD 6,000 in cash for items, including services rendered.

Kandhiban and Wadhawan were listed as the directors of Kiora Worldwide, while Sharma was listed as its secretary.

Two of Kiora Worldwide’s bank accounts later received nearly USD 480,000 from three scam victims.

The money received in the bank accounts belonging to Kiora Worldwide and Quartz Resources were remitted to accounts belonging to other companies in countries including China and the UAE. The scam proceeds were not recovered.

Hypergrowth Global Karnataka will focus on high-growth startups, recognising them as drivers of economic growth and competitiveness, and creators of sustainable jobs and societal well-being.

The programme addresses a significant support gap for fast-growing scale-ups, as most efforts traditionally concentrate on early-stage startups.

The initiative aims to propel the best Bengaluru-Karnataka-based tech companies into successful global commercialisation and expansion into international target markets.

This comes on the heels of the Bengaluru-Karnataka startup ecosystem being highlighted in the 2024 Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER), which was also launched at the conference this week as an initiative between Startup Genome and the Karnataka Digital Economy Mission.
