  • LTA to spend SGD 900 million to ramp up Singapore’s bus network

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said it will spend up to SGD 900 million over the next eight years to improve Singapore’s public bus network. The LTA is launching the ‘Bus Connectivity Enhancement Programme’ and will make enhancements to the city-state’s bus network, in consultation with the Grassroots Advisers, it stated in an official news release.

As Singapore’s rail network is increasing, with the addition of three new stations to close the loop of the Circle Line in 2026, as well as upcoming rail lines like the Jurong Region Line (JRL) and the Cross Island Line (CRL), which will open in stages from 2027 and 2030, respectively, public buses will play an essential role in complementing the rail network.

It will provide residents convenient access to the rail system and alternative travel options, and serve as a primary mode of daily commute for many, the LTA said. It said the target is to have 8 in 10 households within a 10-minute walk from a train station.

“The pace of housing development has picked up in recent years, and we see changes in travel patterns and an increase in demand for bus services. As our newer housing estates continue to grow, some precincts are located farther away from existing town centres and MRT stations. New developments in more mature estates can also be better served, especially in areas with fewer existing bus services, or where the resident population has grown substantially and the passenger loads on the MRT and buses have increased,” the LTA stated.

What are the enhancements to Singapore’s bus network?

LTA will step up improvements to bus services, such as by adding more trips, adjusting routes or introducing new services in response to changing travel patterns. It will make more of such adjustments based on regular reviews of the bus network.

“One upcoming example is to extend a bus service to connect residents in Toa Payoh East to Caldecott MRT station, to improve connectivity from Toa Payoh East to the Thomson-East Coast Line and the Circle Line. We plan to introduce this bus service by the end of this year,” it said.

More peak-hour express bus services as an alternative option for residents will be introduced, to complement busier MRT lines. A new City Direct Service (CDS) will be introduced in Punggol from around October 2024, providing a direct route to the city.

LTA will adopt new approaches in planning for bus services, primarily in new estates.

“We will speed up the pace of introducing bus services in new towns to better serve early batches of residents who moved into new estates, in anticipation of growing demand. For example, we intend to bring forward the introduction of a new bus service, connecting residents in new and upcoming BTO developments in Yishun East to nearby Khatib MRT station. We aim to launch this service by end September 2024.

“For estates with areas located farther away from major transport nodes and town centres, we will introduce ‘express feeder’ bus services to enhance connectivity for residents. Compared to existing feeder services, these services will take more direct routes with fewer intermediate stops, reducing residents’ travel time for the first and last mile of their journeys from major transport nodes. An example is the introduction of a bus service in Tampines North in December 2024, which will provide a more direct connection for residents in Tampines North to Tampines MRT station,” it said.

The organisation will progressively identify and introduce more of these bus service enhancements in the coming months. The aforementioned amount will be used for the purchase of new buses, infrastructural improvements and operating cost for new services. Similar to existing bus services, part of the cost will be recovered through fares paid by commuters using the services.

“As we grow our bus network to serve new needs, it is important that we spend our resources prudently. LTA will continue to review and adjust our bus network where appropriate, to reallocate the savings to better serve commuters across different parts of Singapore,” it said.

  • French train network hit by ‘malicious’ arson attacks ahead of opening ceremony of Paris Olympics

Just hours before the grand opening ceremony of the Olympics, French railway company  SNCF on Friday said its high-speed  TGV network was hit by a series of ‘malicious acts’ which include arson attacks.

The malicious activities reportedly attempt to paralyse the high-speed network of the country at a time when the nation is hosting the grand sporting event with visitors from multiple nations and sportsmen arriving in the French capital city.

SCNF has asked travellers to avoid train travel.

SNCF is advising travellers “not to go to the station” – a reminder only the Atlantique, Nord and Est lines of the TGV network are impacted, BBC reported.

The journeys of about 800,000 travellers will be affected by what French authorities have called “coordinated malicious acts” on French train lines, France’s state railways company SNCF told CNN.

French Prime Minister  Gabriel Attal described the episode as an ‘act of sabotage.

“Early this morning, acts of sabotage were carried out in a prepared and coordinated manner on SNCF installations,” he said. “The consequences on the rail network are massive and serious,” the PM said.

” I think of all the French people, all the families, who were preparing to go on vacation. I share their anger and salute their patience, their understanding and the civic-mindedness they demonstrate,” he said. He said the French intelligence services and law enforcement are trying to find and punish the perpetrators of the criminal acts.

French transport minister condemned the development.

He posted on X: “Coordinated malicious acts targeted several TGV lines last night and will seriously disrupt traffic until this weekend. I strongly condemn these criminal actions which will compromise the vacation departures of many French people. A big thank you to the #SNCF teams, on the bridge to restore traffic conditions as quickly as possible.”

Eurostar, the high-speed train service connecting the United Kingdom with France, has been forced cancelled amid disruption.

“Due to coordinated acts of malice in France, affecting the high speed line between Paris and Lille, all high-speed trains going to and coming from Paris are being diverted via the classic line today Friday 26 July. This extends the journey time by around an hour and a half. Several trains have been cancelled,” Eurostar said in a statement to CNN.

Several industries across the globe, including banks, airlines, telecommunications companies, TV and radio broadcasters, and supermarkets, were hit after users reported a blue screen of death error screens on Windows platforms last Friday.

  • Singapore telecom: 3G service phase-out begins in Aug 2024, starting with M1 mobile network

The phase-out of 3G telecom services in Singapore — and the transition to 4G/5G — begins from August 1, 2024. The first mobile network operator to make the shift is M1, according to a media released issued today.

The release said: “In July 2023, mobile network operators (MNOs) had announced plans to retire their 3G networks. [The] IMDA indicated that before retirement, MNOs must ensure that their remaining 3G subscribers, both individual and enterprise users, are migrated smoothly onto 4G/5G networks. If this is achieved, the MNOs can start to retire 3G services from 31 July 2024.”

The IMDA is the Infocomm Media Development Authority, a Singapore Government agency that leads the nation’s digitalisation journey.

Today’s release informed that the Authority had been closely tracking the progress made by the mobile network operators in Singapore.

“Given that M1 has fully migrated all its individual and enterprise 3G subscribers to 4G/5G services, M1 will proceed to retire its 3G network beginning 1 August 2024,” said the release.

“Singtel and StarHub will give their remaining 3G subscribers more time to migrate and will continue to assist their customers. If smooth migration is achieved, Singtel and StarHub plan to commence retiring their 3G services from November 2024,” it added.

The release said that 3G mobile devices were no longer being imported into the Singapore market. “Since February 2024, [the] IMDA has stopped the import and sale of 3G mobile devices in Singapore to prevent further proliferation in the market.

“Retailers/service providers of non-telecommunication products/services that make use of 3G mobile connectivity, such as car manufacturers and fleet management service providers, were also informed of the planned retirement of the 3G networks. They are required to take the necessary mitigation measures, and to inform their users,” it said.

Measures to support 3G service phase-out

    ● 3G services were introduced more than 20 years ago in Singapore. The retirement of 3G will unlock spectrum capacity that can be invested in future-ready 5G networks, to provide a better mobile experience, and support enterprise digital transformation.

    ● More than 99.9 per cent of Singapore’s mobile subscribers are already on 4G/5G, with 3G subscribers making up less than 0.1 per cent. 5G subscriptions have also gained prevalence since its introduction in 2022, making up 20 per cent of total mobile subscribers today.

    ● To support their 3G subscribers, MNOs are required to provide a range of 4G/5G service plans and 4G/5G mobile phone options to assist them in their migration.

    ● MNOs have also been providing dedicated assistance to vulnerable groups, such as dedicated support for elderly subscribers, and delivery of new SIM cards to subscribers with mobility issues.

    ● MNOs are also required to support enterprise users and assist them to take the necessary steps to smoothly migrate to 4G/5G services.
