  • Indian Oil and Sun Mobility form JV to expand battery swapping network in India • EVreporter

    On June 5, 2024, Indian Oil entered into a joint venture with Sun Mobility to establish one of the largest battery-swapping networks in India by 2030. This initiative aims to promote the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) by enhancing infrastructure. IndianOil and Sun Mobility will form a 50:50 joint venture to scale up battery swapping solutions in India.

    The joint venture will conduct the following business activities:

    • Deploy and operate Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) solutions for two-wheeler, three-wheeler, and four-wheeler vehicles with a gross vehicle weight lower than 2 tonnes (Small Format Electric Vehicles – SFEV).
    • Retrofitting to convert vehicles to SFEV using docks and batteries, enabling their operation as electric vehicles for SFEV-BaaS over a network of swap points, including IndianOil retail outlets.

    The joint venture plans to expand to over 10,000 battery-swapping stations across 40+ cities, aiming to serve over a million customers. This will offer Battery as a Service (BaaS) nationwide, addressing concerns about battery cost, maintenance, replacement, and charging time. The initiative is expected to boost EV adoption, create jobs, and support local businesses within the EV ecosystem. It also aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote cleaner transportation solutions.

    IndianOil’s investment in Sun Mobility will support the development of battery-swapping technology, large-scale local manufacturing, and expansion to global markets. Sun Mobility will focus on research, development, manufacturing, and improving battery swapping solutions, while the joint venture will manage network deployment, operations, and business development.

    Currently, Sun Mobility supports more than 25,000 electric vehicles in India across 20 cities, using over 630 stations and 50,000+ smart batteries. It facilitates over a million swaps per month for various two—and three-wheeler customers. The consolidated revenue of Sun Mobility Pte Ltd Singapore (SMS) for FY23-24 is over USD 11.5 Million.

    The joint venture will leverage IndianOil’s network of over 37,000 fuel stations and Sun Mobility’s battery-swapping technology to provide accessible and convenient battery-swapping services nationwide.

  • Relux Electric secures INR 250 crore project funding to expand charging network on highways • EVreporter

    EV charging infrastructure provider Relux Electric has announced that it has secured INR 250 crore of cumulative project funding from a group of private real estate and infrastructure investors to expand its network of EV charging stations on the highways of South India. The company will utilise the fund to create 20 new charging stations within the next 8 months. 

    Relux Electric is currently operating 100+ charging stations in south India. Located alongside highways and at strategic locations within cities, these charging stations cater only to private vehicles. However, the company is soon launching a new vertical for fleet operators and commercial vehicle owners to set up AC charging stations in their locations. 

    Managing Director and CEO Karthikeyan Santharam said Relux has identified land parcels on busy highways such as NH 44, NH 45, and NH 556. The company will procure lands and set up the charging stations, each occupying an area of 1 to 1.5 acres. Boasting a minimum capacity of 1 MW each, the hypercharging stations can let as many as 10 small to medium-sized cars, 10 high-end cars, 2 buses and a truck charge simultaneously. The charging stations will also have amenities such as eateries and shopping centres. The charging stations guarantee a 10-minute charging time for three-wheelers and an 18-minute charging time for four-wheelers.

    The company is also expanding in Eastern and Western India, having built a strong presence in the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. The statement claimed that Relux Electric is valued at about INR 800 crore and retains 100% equity.

    Relux Electric has chosen the route of project funding for the current round of expansion, which is based on revenue sharing. However, as Relux Electric has an aggressive plan to exponentially increase the number of charging stations in its network within a year, the company is already in discussions with investors. It is willing to explore various funding options. Further, the company statement added that Relux still has control of the entire 100% equity even after this project funding.

    “We are able to make operational profit from day one as our focus is always on maximizing utilization – rather than on increasing the strength of the network. We are also committed to developing our own team for R&D, and operations & maintenance. As an Original Design Equipment company, we procure charging equipment based on our own designs. These factors make it possible for us to keep the downtime to a bare minimum of a few hours and ensure higher utilization of assets – up to 40%, which is double the industry average”, added Karthikeyan.

    On the launch of the new vertical, Mr Karthikeyan said it would focus on signing up builders of residential and commercial complexes, fleet operators and travel agencies to use our dedicated Hubs for their needs. “We don’t want to club personal and commercial vehicles in the same place, which affects the reputation and operation difficulties of space providers”, he signs off.

  • AIR INDIA ADDS ZURICH TO ITS GROWING EUROPEAN NETWORK


    Air India will start a non-stop service between Delhi and Zurich starting 16 June 2024

    GURUGRAM: Air India, India’s leading global airline, will start a non-stop service between Delhi and Zurich starting 16 June 2024, marking the airline’s entry in Switzerland and taking the total number of cities served by Air India in mainland Europe to seven.

    Using its two-class configured Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, Air India will operate on the new European route on four days every week – Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

    Air India’s new service will provide travelers in Switzerland, as well as those in southern Germany and western Austria with a non-stop option to travel to Delhi, and onward to destinations across Air India’s growing route network, particularly in the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and Australia.

    Air India flight AI151 will depart Delhi at 1405hrs, arriving in Zurich at 1915hrs. AI152 will depart Zurich at 2050hrs, arriving in Delhi at 0805hrs the next day. The schedule enables travelers to conveniently connect to Air India’s flights from Delhi to popular destinations, such as Bangkok, Colombo, Dhaka,Ho Chi Minh City, Kathmandu, Melbourne, Phuket, Singapore, and Sydney, amongst others.   

    Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer, of Air India, said: “This new route strengthens the ties between India and Switzerland, which are not only major trading partners but also boast a vibrant exchange of people. With over 250 Swiss companies operating in India, hundreds of Indian companies in Switzerland, and a growing Indian diaspora of nearly 18,000, these flights will cater to a strong demand for business and leisure travel in both directions.”

    “Switzerland, a consistently top-ranking European destination for Indian tourists, will now be even more accessible, with these flights further solidifying the economic and cultural bridges between the two nations,” Wilson added.

    Travelers can look forward to great comfort and care when traveling with Air India, from the warm Indian hospitality of its cabin crew to the choice of international and authentic Indian cuisine on board and complimentary beverages. 

    Air India currently operates a total of 60 weekly flights to and from six cities in mainland Europe, namely Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Milan, Paris, and Vienna.

    Bookings for flights to Zurich are being progressively opened across channels, including Air India’s website, and mobile app, via travel agents as well as online travel agents.
