Speaking on the occasion, Jayesh Ranjan expressed his delight at seeing working professionals pursuing further education to improve their qualifications, enhance job prospects, change designations, or even shift careers to pursue entrepreneurial journeys. He noted that management education provides the essential tools for handling various business and management-related challenges. “India, under PM Modi, is poised to become a $5 trillion economy soon. Similarly, Telangana’s Chief Minister, Revanth Reddy, envisions making Telangana a $1 trillion economy in the next 10 years. Before the convocation, a panel discussion was organized on the topic “Will Online Education Be the Future of Education?”. The panellists included Dr Usha Yanamandra, Founder and CEO of Katalyst and Social Intelligence Expert; Anuradha A, Executive Partner & HYD Location Leader at IBM; Shishir Bansal, Additional Director General at Central Public Works Dept, Govt of India; Thrimurthy Oduri, Faculty Member of Nelson Business School (an alumnus of IIT-Kharagpur); and Aditya Deendayal, Executive Director of Alankrita Resorts and VP-TCEI. The discussion was moderated by Saumik Pal, AVP of Cyber Security at an MNC.

The panellists largely favoured online education, with the majority agreeing that it would play a significant role in the future of education. However, Shishir Bansal expressed concerns, suggesting that online education may not be sustained long-term and that it might not be beneficial for society in all contexts. He posed a rhetorical question, asking the audience to consider whether they would prefer online doctors over offline doctors.

Addressing concerns about the social development of students and strategies to mitigate such issues, Aditya Deendayal highlighted the importance of interaction with instructors and peers. He suggested that active participation in online forums, group projects, and virtual study groups could help combat isolation. Additionally, utilizing social features of learning platforms and joining course-related online communities can foster a sense of belonging.

Other panellists observed that online education is cost-effective and allows for learning at one’s convenience. “Whether you like it or not, online education is going to be the mainline education in the future,” they remarked.

Moderator Saumik Pal added that the Government of India offers several online education programs, including SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds), which provides affordable, quality online courses across various disciplines.

“Today, you can earn a degree from the comfort of your home, at your own pace, and often at a fraction of the cost of traditional education. However, this shift does raise questions about employment prospects. Many students wonder if their online degrees will be accepted in the job market, particularly by multinational companies. The answer is yes – degrees completed online are recognized and valid for jobs in multinational companies and higher education opportunities,” Pal reassured the audience.

  • Serial cheater arrested in Singapore for fake-selling Sentosa tickets and other items online

Universal Studios in Resorts World Sentosa
Universal Studios in Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore, is one of the most popular theme parks in South-East Asia. The online scammer was fake-selling tickets to such in-demand theme parks in Sentosa, among other things, and then failing to deliver those admission tickets to the duped buyers. Representative photo courtesy: Instagram/universalstudiossingapore

A 32-year-old man has been arrested in Singapore for his suspected involvement in a series of cheating cases, according to a media release issued yesterday by the Singapore Police Force. He was allegedly scamming people by fake-selling, among other things, tickets to theme parks at Resorts World Sentosa.

The release said that between August 10 and 14 this year, the police received several reports from victims who were purportedly cheated by an online seller.

This online seller had advertised the sale of Japanese Anime trading cards and admission tickets to theme parks at Resorts World Sentosa on Facebook and Carousell. The man allegedly failed to deliver the items after payments were made.

Through follow-up investigations, officers from the Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on August 15. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man was believed to be involved in other similar cases.

The man is being charged with cheating in court today, under Section 420 of the Penal Code 1871. The offence of cheating carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine under Singapore law.

The police advised members of the public to take the following precautions when making online purchases:

    ● If the price is too good to be true, it probably is. Purchase only from authorised sellers or reputable sources, especially for high-value items.

    ● Opt for buyer protection by using in-built payment options that release payment to the seller only upon delivery. Whenever possible, avoid making advance payments or direct bank transfers to the seller as this method does not offer any protection.

    ● Scammers may entice buyers to contact them directly through messaging platforms such as WhatsApp or WeChat by offering a better or faster deal if bank transfer payments are made directly to them. They may also use a local bank account or provide a copy of a NRIC/driver’s licence to make a buyer believe that they are genuine sellers. Do not fall for it.

For more information on scams, members of the public can visit scamalert.sg or call the Anti-Scam Hotline at 1800-722-6688. Anyone with information on such scams may call the Police Hotline at 1800-255-0000 or submit information online at www.police.gov.sg/iwitness.

  • America considering dismantling Google over illegal online search monopoly: Reports

Days after an Indian American judge came down hard on web giant Google over its malpractice of monopolising search on the Internet, the US is considering breaking up the California-based company, reports said.

“The move would be Washington’s first push to dismantle a company for illegal monopolization since unsuccessful efforts to break up Microsoft Corp. two decades ago,” Bloomberg reported on Wednesday.

“Less severe options include forcing Google to share more data with competitors and measures to prevent it from gaining an unfair advantage in AI products, said the people,” the report added.

The New York Times reported that officials from the US’ Justice Department (DOJ) are “considering what remedies to ask a federal judge to order against the search giant”.

“They are discussing various proposals, including breaking off parts of Google, such as its Chrome browser or Android smartphone operating system,” it reported.

Judge Amit P. Mehta of the US District Court for the District of Columbia is overseeing the case. Mehta has asked the DOJ and Google to come up with a process for determining a fix by September 4. The judge has scheduled a hearing two days later, on September 6, 2024, to discuss next steps, reports said.

Google could have to share its data with rivals, or, and, abandon deals that made its search engine the default option on various devices. Reports said that the US is looking to curb Google’s power.

In the last four years, companies like Apple, Meta and Amazon have been sued by US Federal antitrust regulators for maintaining monopolies illegally.

  • Daily online grocery demand slows down, FMCG sales growth drops: Report

Food & grocery delivery, digital payments top Indians' priorities on smartphones

Food & grocery delivery, digital payments top Indians’ priorities on smartphonesIANS

As stocks of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies keep growing, the sector growth has slowed down due to less packaged food consumption among the Indians and slowdown in daily online grocery demand on various digital platforms, according to a report.

Latest insights from leading market consulting and intelligence firms Kantar and NielsenIQ, the FMCG sector growth slowed to 4 per cent in the April-June quarter (Q1 FY25), compared to 12.2 per cent in the same period last fiscal.

The reasons cited in the data are price drops, reduced packaged food consumption (amid severe heatwave) and daily household products and groceries not selling as fast on various quick grocery delivery platforms as compared to last year.

The urban market did not record growth for three straight quarters, and is contending with a huge Q2 2023 base. The falling Urban curve coupled with a strong base is likely to constrict the numbers for the next quarters.

    market

Urban market did not record growth for three straight quartersIANS

Rural growth again outpaced urban areas and big FMCG companies maintained better performance than smaller firms. Consumption gaps between urban and rural markets are narrowing down.

In the Union Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman decreased income tax and increased standard deduction rebate, a move that is likely to boost FMCG sector growth.

According to the Kantar FMCG pulse report for Q2, rural India has bounced back as a buyer of FMCG such as soaps and soft drinks.

The start to 2024 from a rural perspective has been brilliant, with rural growth overtaking urban’s; and the rural worm is looking upward, the report mentioned. This growth in the rural areas has been fuelled by region-centric measures announced by the government in the interim budget earlier this year, which provided stability.

Although inflation may have slowed down to acceptable levels, it still has an impact on the consumer.

Looking ahead, the FMCG market in India remains resilient despite challenges and is poised for a 4.5-6.5 per cent growth in FY24, according to a recent NielsenIQ ‘FMCG Quarterly Snapshot’.

“The industry’s ability to navigate complexities and adapt to evolving market dynamics underscores its significance in the Indian economy, offering promising opportunities in the future,” the earlier report mentioned.

  • Jamtara Cyber Crime Kingpins: 4 Arrested for Widespread Online Fraud Across India

In recent times, several incidents of cyber fraud have been reported in various districts of Uttar Pradesh, specifically targeting Indraprastha Gas and Green Gas connection holders as well as electricity connection holders. On August 5, 2024, the Cyber Crime Police team achieved significant success by arresting four inter-seasoned cyber criminals near Jajmau Bridge, Kanpur. During the arrest, 12 mobile phones and pre-activated SIM cards with fake IDs, used in the frauds, were recovered. The four cybercriminals arrested are residents of Jamtara, Jharkhand. They used to send specially designed APK files via WhatsApp messages to the mobile numbers of individuals who had Green Gas, Indraprastha Gas, and electricity connections. By obtaining crucial data through these APK files, they would fraudulently withdraw money from their victims’ bank accounts using online banking and payment wallets/apps. The money obtained through cyber fraud was then withdrawn from various ATMs located in Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Sikkim. They would also use these fraudulently obtained funds to pay electricity bills, recharge mobile phones, and at petrol pumps, and subsequently divide the cash among themselves.

The four arrested cyber criminals are originally from Deoghar and Jamtara, Jharkhand, but they were living in rented rooms in Madhubani, Bihar, to avoid being traced.
