  • The Remarkable Recovery of a 5-Year-Old Boy from Chikungunya at Sahyadri Hospitals

Young Child Miraculously Defeats Life-Threatening Brain Infection and Organ Failure

PUNE: A five-year-old boy who suffered severe complications from a chikungunya infection, including brain encephalitis and multi-organ failure, was discharged from Sahyadri Hospitals MomStory this week, marking a significant triumph in pediatric medical care.

The child was initially seen by Dr Vinod Shelar, a Pediatrician at Chandan Nagar on August 18, due to a high fever but he started getting fits hence was urgently transferred to Sahyadri Hospitals MomStory Nagar Road – PICU, for specialized care.

“On arrival at MomStory, he had persistent convulsions and signs of severe brain infection including unequal pupils indicative of increased intracranial pressure. We noted the child’s condition required immediate intervention with ventilator support due to his unstable breathing and ongoing seizures, Continuous EEG monitoring also showed ongoing continuous convulsions that needed aggressive management to control it. This entity is called Non-Convulsive Status Epilepticus where convulsions are not seen but in the brain, there are ongoing convulsions.  Hence he was started on continuous infusion of medicine to control ongoing seizures and raised brain pressure. Slowly EEG started to normalize. This if not treated urgently can cause severe brain dysfunction,” said Dr. Sagar Lad, Senior Pediatric Intensivist at Sahyadri Hospitals MomStory.

“The initial outlook was concerning as further tests showed acute liver failure which is seen in less than 3% of patients with chikungunya infection and needs urgent medication for liver regeneration and very low platelet and white blood cell counts, making treatment more complex. He received blood and platelet transfusions. He also had low blood pressure and refractory shock required medicines to normalize Blood pressure. A real-time PCR test soon confirmed a severe chikungunya infection. The situation worsened when he developed hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, a rare and dangerous condition where the body’s immune system starts to damage its organs. These complications require strong treatment plans, including Intravenous Immunoglobulin and steroids, to effectively control the immune system’s excessive response,” explained Dr. Sagar Lad.

Dr. Pradeep Suryawanshi, Director of Neonatology & Paediatrics at Sahyadri Hospitals MomStory, stated, “During his stay, the child underwent continuous monitoring and multiple treatment adjustments to address the complex interplay of the infection and its broad impacts on his brain and other organs. The brain scans revealed widespread signs of encephalitis, a severe and uncommon condition in chikungunya cases.”

“After a tough but successful 14-day stay in the hospital with 2 weeks of ventilation the child made incredible progress and no longer needed the ventilator. His thinking and movement skills are almost back to normal, despite the severity of his case. He is now interacting well with the world around him,” said Dr. Suryawanshi.

On September 1, the child was discharged from the hospital. His condition had stabilized significantly, and he was able to return home with no ongoing neurological deficits.

“The family thanked the doctors and hospital staff deeply for their dedication and care, which transformed a critical situation into a story of survival and hope,” said Dr Prateek Kataria, senior consultant at the hospital.

The concerted efforts of a multidisciplinary team include Dr. Prateek Kataria, Dr. Preeti Lad, Dr. Sushmita Nimagadda, Dr Nikita Mankar, Dr Aaishwarya Dalal, Dr. Pranjali Fulari, Dr. Neha Kunturkar, and Dr. Dinesh Thakre, with critical support from pediatric liver specialist Dr. Snehvardhan Pandey and pediatric hematologist Dr. Kannan.

“Chikungunya is considered to be not a very serious infection in children but in this current situation in Pune, we are seeing very complicated chikungunya infection, especially in children affecting the brain causing convulsion, decreasing level of consciousness, and even coma. If not detected early can be life-threatening. Probably this is due to a change in the Virulence factor of the virus,” said Dr Sagar Lad.

  • Tata BlueScope Steel is Pioneering Plastic Recycling for a Greener Future

Fabricators gain additional income by participating in the collection and recycling of plastic guard films from color-coated steel sheets

PUNE: Tata BlueScope Steel, one of India’s leading producers of color-coated steel and building solutions, launched a sustainability initiative, in Rajasthan, aimed at collecting and recycling plastic waste, specifically the plastic guard film used with its flagship retail brand DURASHINE®.

DURASHINE® is a premium steel roofing product offering durable and aesthetically superior solutions for residential, commercial, and industrial applications.

These sheets are protected by a thin plastic guard film that prevents abrasion and scratches during transportation and storage, preserving their coating and paint finish. Tata BlueScope Steel encourages the immediate removal of this guard film after installation to ensure proper disposal and recycling.

  • Why Allocating 10% to Gold is a Smart Move According to Angel One

MUMBAI: Angel One Ltd.’s research shows that Gold will continue to shine as a preferred asset class in 2024 and advises investors to increase exposure to 10% in their portfolio. The leading player in the fintech sector provides an exclusive outlook on the precious metal, thereby fortifying its position as a partner of choice in investors’ wealth-building journey.

Prathamesh Mallya, Deputy Vice President, Research, Non-Agri Commodities and Currencies, Angel One Ltd, commented “We, at Angel One, are committed to sharing advanced research for our investors to make informed decisions and stay ahead of the curve. Gold has always had a sentimental value in our Indian society. In times of global economic uncertainty, gold would provide the perfect hedging solution against both currency fluctuations as well as inflation. We firmly believe that this study would aid as a tool to the investors in their wealth creation journey, particularly in times of economic uncertainty.”

Some additional study findings which affirm the golden era for the yellow metal:

YTD as of 23rd August 2024, Spot Gold prices have moved up by around 22 percent and MCX gold futures have moved up by around 14 percent. The double-digit gains in gold prices in 2024 are a clear indication that precious metal as an asset class is in flavor for investors across the globe.

Historically, it has been observed that the key guiding principle behind the allocation of gold as a part of the central bank portfolio is constructed according to three guiding principles safety, liquidity, and return.

Global official gold reserves rose by a net 290t in the first quarter of 2024, the highest Q1 total in data series back to 2000; 1% higher than the previous Q1 record set in 2023 (286t) and 69% more than the five-year quarterly average (171t). The chart above clearly shows the interest of global central banks in their accumulation of gold in 2024.

The investment demand as seen in the net additions of ETF holdings also signals that gold will shine for a much longer time even if the pandemic is under control.

With double-digit gains already in the year 2024, the important event that will drive gold prices further higher will come out of a combination of events starting from interest rate cuts in the US and further interest rates trajectory in Japan along with the outcome of the US elections. Angel One has been at the forefront of research-backed advisory for its clients. In alignment with that vision, Angel One presents the outlook for gold for 2024. The chart structure of gold prices indicates further moves higher towards the $2800/ounce mark. Accumulation zones for gold stand at around $2300/ounce mark for long-term investors. Prices on the MCX can be accumulated at around Rs.68000/10 gms mark for a target higher towards Rs. 78000/10 gms mark by the end of 2024. With the global output to contract and the economies in a deeper recession than most anticipate, gold as an asset class is a safe bet for investors across the globe.

PUNE: This Ganesh Chaturthi, With Love NGO, launched a heartwarming initiative to merge festivity with social responsibility. For every eco-friendly idol made at the workshops, a ‘Joybag’ filled with essential food grains was distributed to less privileged families, teaching the children of our community, the value of spreading joy to others.

The initiative reached some of the most vulnerable children at Epiphany School, where students living in dire circumstances received these Joybags.
