One of the fining-dining restaurants housed within Raffles Hotel Singapore, the wood-fire-driven Butcher’s Block presents an avant garde interpretation of traditional cooking methods close to nature. From March to May this year, Butcher’s Block brings the ‘Spring IMUA experience’ to Singapore foodies, as a tribute to nature’s awakening.

Butcher’s Block is helmed by Chef de Cuisine Jordan Keao, born and raised in Hawaii, where cooking, fishing, hunting, and farming are a part of everyday life. The restaurant exhibits the highest quality of produce, meats, and seafood sourced from around the world and translated through fire.

Drawing inspiration from Hawai’i’s natural splendour and guided by the spirit of IMUA — ‘move forward with strength and spirit’ — this menu experience mirrors the season’s blooming transformations. Chef Jordan has a commitment to sustainable, whole-animal butchery and zero-waste principles.

A quartet of Chef’s snacks promises an expressive medley of island-inspired flavours.

Begin with the popular duo of Big Eye Ahi Tuna Poké, a refined take on the well-loved Hawai’ian poké classic, and Wagyu Beef Pipikaula, which spotlights a deeply umami Blackmore rump and chuck roll cured in aged garlic shoyu and dry-aged for 25 days.

Newly introduced, the Grilled Asparagus Rosti showcases the definitive Spring produce lacto-fermented for over 36 hours before being grilled and assembled with parsnip puree and Agria potato rosti.

Another new snack takes the form of Taramasalata, which is inspired by Chef Jordan’s childhood days spent with his uncle, who was a fisherman. The collar of the Ahi tuna is first smoked before being made into a pate with the same consistency as taramasalata, and piped into a pain souffle pillow made with laksa leaf powder.

The essence of Hawai’i’s spring flavours comes to life with Lomi Lomi, a term derived from the Hawai’ian term to massage. This celebrates a three-century-old side dish where fish was salted and preserved. Chef Jordan’s inventive rendition highlights smoked Japanese hamachi cured in paprika, paired with tomato sorbet and agua chile for a zesty tang. Finally, crispy Jerusalem artichoke tops the dish for a textural crunch.

For dinner, guests may also delight in Western Plains Kalua Pork Ravioli, an innovative interpretation of the traditional Hawai’ian dish of Kalua Pork presented as a ravioli containing Western Plains pork shoulder that had been wrapped in banana leaf and slow roasted overnight. Cooked over the wood-fire, the dumplings are enlivened with taro leaf, sweet potato puree and fermented red cabbage, seamlessly marrying the flavours to perfection.

Epicurean journey through the island’s heart

Continue the bountiful feast of springtime with an array of main courses, including the signature Huli-Huli Dry-Aged Duck, a dish that embodies the island’s vibrant and unique identity.

Malaysian farmed duck is first dry-aged whole for a week, then butchered into different parts: the breast undergoes further dry-ageing, then meticulously ‘huli’ (turned) over ambient heat above the fire and glazed with a luscious caramelised shoyu reduction. The duck leg is slow-cooked into a confit, and presented with a jus made from roasted duck bones. This reimagined classic pays homage to the smoky, flamekissed flavours of traditional Hawai’ian barbecue infused with the bounty of the season.

Grilled Murray Cod takes centre stage, featuring the fillet of this sustainable, fatty fish paired with a turmeric-accented mousseline made with the trimming and collar from the same fish. Accompanied with beautifully charred kale alongside a luxurious bottarga cream and rich Koshihikari rice risotto, the dish delivers a symphony of umami complexities.

Blackmore Farms Trio is a true reflection of Chef Jordan’s culinary prowess in wood-fired techniques and whole-animal butchery.

Marvel at the artful presentation of prized Blackmore Farm wagyu showcased in three distinctly new ways — a grilled chef’s select cut, a luxurious beef bone marrow custard, and a beef fat financier — all created from the same half cow that the restaurant regularly brings in. English pea purée, shaved fennel and pea tendrils complete the dish with added freshness and texture.

  • Exploring DC technology for electrification • EVreporter

Schaltbau launches Eddicy bidirectional contactors at Elecrama 2025. In this interview, Steffen Munz, Group CEO of Schaltbau GmbH, discusses the relevance of the newly launched brand and the importance of advanced contactors for the electric mobility and energy storage industry.

Schaltbau is and has been a leader in direct current (DC) technology for over 95 years during which we have become a trusted supplier of the rail industry worldwide. To cater to the uniquely poised high growth industrial segment, Schaltbau has launched the new Eddicy brand.

With our Eddicy solutions and products, we are dedicated to now also advancing electrification in the energy and e-mobility sectors, providing safe, sustainable and energy-efficient solutions.

It is our DC expertise. Today, DC technology is experiencing a renaissance with the energy transition because it can also be used wherever energy is charged or stored. Schaltbau manufactures contactors, connectors and switches that are required for switching DC circuits – also in energy and e-mobility applications.

Our decades of experience in DC technology is currently a globally sought-after competence. Further, our solutions and products, which meet the challenging rail standards, easily comply with the reliable and stringent demands for the new energy and e-mobility applications.

Not only is the rail industry growing, as old diesel locomotives are being replaced by electric ones: our Eddicy DC products are now required for everything that is to be operated electrically and with renewable energies: Cars, buses, trucks, ships, agricultural machinery, forklift trucks and much more.

Then there are applications that produce energy, such as solar parks where our contactors are used in the inverter applications, or for storage of renewable energy or charging of electric vehicles. And DC grids will also play a much more prominent role in industrial manufacturing.

By providing reliable and forward-looking solutions, Eddicy empowers industries to harness the full potential of electrification – from a business, energy efficiency and sustainability perspective.

Our purpose is to enable the economy and society to unlock the full potential of electrification.

The benefit of DC technology is that it can be used more efficiently without the usual losses that occur when direct current is converted into alternate current (AC) and vice versa.

In that sense, the benefit for customers is that our products help them increase energy efficiency and performance while safely connecting and disconnecting direct current loads. In addition, Schaltbau products provide reliability that ensures non-stop performance, which is critical for new energy and e-mobility applications.

EV Charging stations is an important application that immediately comes to mind. Charging with direct current enables electric vehicles to cover long ranges in a relatively short charging time.

Extremely important here is the use of galvanic isolation – which our solutions provide – to ensure safe charging processes. In the event of a fault, this function interrupts the flow of electricity under full load both in the charging station and the vehicle. This requires the contactors to be capable of not only to carry the full load currents but also be capable of switching ON-Load at the rated currents. This will be particularly vital when ultra-fast charging stations become available. They can operate with a voltage of up to 1000 volts and deliver a charging current of up to 500 amps – making charging as fast as refueling and fulfilling the highest safety requirements.

It’s hard to overestimate India’s relevance as the fifth largest and fastest-growing economy in the world and its share in world trade and global supply chains. We witness the Indian market for electric vehicles (EVs) to grow exponentially, and the government’s initiatives are driving this growth, aiming for 30% of private car sales to be electric by 2030. Our aim is to support longer ranges, faster battery charging and energy efficiency to increase e-mobility adoption. And our local production capabilities ensure that we can meet the growing demand for high-quality electrical components which are manufactured in India.

Schaltbau India Pvt. Ltd. is a 100% subsidiary of Schaltbau GmbH, Germany. The company was established in September 2009 and is an ISO 9001:2008 certified company.

Schaltbau India adopted the “Make in India” initiative way back in 2014 with the establishment of the manufacturing unit at Navi Mumbai. In 2022, Schaltbau India further expanded its manufacturing base in India by setting up a state-of-the-art second facility in Manesar, Haryana. These plants not only have manufacturing but also in-house type test facilities which enable us to cover complete life cycle management from design to end of life of our products.

Schaltbau India’s locally manufactured products qualify as a “Make in India” source and have been approved by industrial clients in the Rail and EV sectors.

Abu Dhabi, UAE – Responding to overwhelming demand, Etihad Airways has announced an increase in its upcoming service between Abu Dhabi and Atlanta, expanding from four times weekly to a daily flight. The route, which launches on July 2, will be the only direct connection between the UAE and Atlanta, enhancing travel convenience for passengers.

The flights will operate from Zayed International Airport (AUH) to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) using the airline’s state-of-the-art Airbus A350-1000. The aircraft features 44 Business Class seats and 327 Economy Class seats, promising a premium travel experience for passengers.

Jurriaan Stelder, Senior Vice President of Network and Alliances at Etihad Airways, emphasized the strong interest in the route since its announcement last November. “We’ve seen great interest from guests, and that’s why we have decided to step up to daily flights on this already very popular route,” he said.

The direct flights will also facilitate seamless one-stop connections for passengers traveling between Atlanta and key South Asian destinations, including Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Karachi. Additionally, travelers can take advantage of Etihad’s U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Preclearance facility in Abu Dhabi, allowing them to complete immigration formalities before departure and arrive in the U.S. as domestic passengers.

Atlanta, known for its vibrant cultural scene and booming business sector, is a key addition to Etihad’s expanding global network. The move to daily service is part of the airline’s broader growth strategy, which includes 13 newly announced routes worldwide this year.

Tickets for the Abu Dhabi-Atlanta route are now on sale, with fares starting at AED 1,925 for Economy Class and AED 10,010 for Business Class.

  • Tesla begins hiring in India following Modi-Musk meet

    NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

New Delhi, India, February 18, 2025: Tesla, the global electric vehicle (EV) giant, has officially begun hiring in India, marking a significant step toward its long-anticipated entry into the country. The company recently posted job openings on its LinkedIn page for 13 positions based in Mumbai and Delhi, covering roles in sales, customer support, service operations, and business support.

Among the listed positions are Store Manager, Service Advisor, Parts Advisor, Service Manager, and Service Technician, indicating Tesla’s intent to establish retail and service infrastructure in key Indian cities. This move follows a high-profile meeting between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington, which appears to have accelerated the company’s expansion plans.

Tesla has been eyeing the Indian market for several years, but its entry was delayed due to high import tariffs and regulatory challenges. However, recent policy changes, including reductions in import duties for EV manufacturers committed to local production, have created a more favorable business environment. The hiring spree suggests Tesla is now ready to move forward with setting up showrooms and service centers, bringing its electric vehicles closer to Indian consumers.

India, the world’s third-largest automobile market, presents a lucrative opportunity for Tesla’s growth.

Samsung SDI Co., South Korea’s second-biggest battery maker, said it will raise 2 trillion won ($1.37 billion) through a stock sale as part of its broader growth strategy.

Its board of directors approved the capital increase aimed at “preemptively” securing a capital to prepare for a rebound in the car battery market, the company said in a press release.

Samsung SDI said it will issue some 11.82 million common shares at 169,200 won per share, with the final stock price set to be decided on May 22, reports Yonhap news agency.

The newly issued shares will be initially sold to the firm’s existing shareholders, with their listing scheduled for June 19 after subscription rounds from May 27 to June 3, the company said.

Samsung SDI plans to utilise the proceeds from the rights issue to invest in a joint venture with General Motors Co. in the United States, expand output capacity at its plant in Hungary and invest in facilities for its solid-state battery line in Korea.

Furthermore, the company will review various financing options, including utilizing its existing assets, to overcome the electric vehicle (EV) “chasm,” which occurs before the widespread adoption of EVs.
