  • WhatsApp rolling out channel alerts, search messages by date features on Android [details]

    whatsapp

    whatsappIANS

Meta-owned WhatsApp is rolling out a feature to search messages by date, channel alerts, and hidden navigation labels on Android.

According to WABetaInfo, these new features are presently available to some beta testers and will be rolling out to more users over the coming days.

The “channel alerts” feature was designed to improve the overall user experience for channel administrators by providing real-time insights about the suspension of their channels, along with the ability to restore the channel by sending a request to WhatsApp.

If someone owns a channel, the report noted that it would be worth opening “channel alerts” within the channel info screen to see if there is any violation.

    WhatsApp

The introduction of a channel alerts feature adds a new layer of transparency to the platform.

In addition, the communication platform is also rolling out other two features after installing the latest update of the app — new improvements for the user interface by implementing a feature to automatically hide navigation labels and the top app bar while scrolling down the screen, and the ability to search messages by date.

The feature to search messages by date will offer users an efficient and convenient way to navigate through their chat history, retrieving specific messages from a particular date and helping them save time, the report mentioned.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp has introduced disappearing voice messages, that will allow users to send a voice message that can only be listened to once before it disappears. It is similar to the “View Once” option for photos and videos introduced in 2021, to add another layer of privacy to your messages.

  • Google AI may soon tell your life story via using your photos, searches

OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Bard Spreading News-Related Misinformation: Report

OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Bard Spreading News-Related Misinformation: ReportIANS

Google is mulling to create a bird’s-eye view of users’ lives using their phone data, photos and searches and then applying AI technology, the media reported.

Titled “Project Ellmann,” the idea is to use large language models (LLMs) like latest Gemini model to utilise search results, find patterns in a user’s photos, create a chatbot and “answer previously impossible questions,” reports CNBC.

“Project Ellman is just one of many ways Google is proposing to create or improve its products with AI technology,” the report mentioned.

Google Photos has more than 1 billion users and 4 trillion photos and videos.

“Project Ellmann” could pull in context using biographies, previous moments and subsequent photos to describe a user’s photos more deeply than “just pixels with labels and metadata”>

“We can’t answer tough questions or tell good stories without a bird’s-eye view of your life,” according to the project.

“We trawl through your photos, looking at their tags and locations to identify a meaningful moment. When we step back and understand your life in its entirety, your overarching story becomes clear,” according to the project presentation.

“With ‘Ellmann Chat,’ imagine opening ChatGPT but it already knows everything about your life. What would you ask it?”

A Google spokesperson said that Google Photos has always used AI to help people search their photos and videos, and “we’re excited about the potential of LLMs to unlock even more helpful experiences”.

“This was an early internal exploration and, as always, should we decide to roll out new features, we would take the time needed to ensure they were helpful to people, and designed to protect users’ privacy and safety as our top priority,” the spokesperson added.

Google this week introduced Gemini, its most capable and general model yet with state-of-the-art performance across many leading benchmarks.

In the coming months, Gemini will be available in more of Google products and services like Search, Ads, Chrome and Duet AI.

According to Google, Gemini 1.0’s sophisticated multimodal reasoning capabilities can help make sense of complex written and visual information.

  • India has zero tolerance policy towards deepfakes: MoS IT

    Rajeev Chandrasekhar

    Rajeev ChandrasekharTwitter

As Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven deepfakes continue to alarm lawmakers around the world, the Indian government has stressed it has a zero tolerance policy towards any online information which is patently false, misinformation and against national security.

Responding to a question in Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued advisories to significant social media intermediaries or platforms, that they should ensure that their rules and regulations and the user agreement contain appropriate provisions for the users not to host, display, upload, modify, publish, transmit, store, update or share any information prohibited under IT Rules.

“They are advised to ensure expeditious action, well within the timeframes stipulated under the IT Rules, 2021, to remove or disable access to information/content that violates the aforesaid provisions of the IT Rules, 2021, upon receipt of court orders or notification from the appropriate government or its authorised agency or on complaint made by the impersonated individual or person authorised by him in this behalf,” the Minister explained.

The IT Ministry is in the process of issuing advisories to social media intermediaries on ensuring 100 per cent compliance on tackling deepfakes and spread of misinformation on their respective platforms.

Chandrasekhar said that in case of failure to follow diligence as provided in the IT Rules, 2021 by social media intermediaries, “They shall lose their safe harbour protection under Section 79 of the IT Act and shall be liable for consequential action as provided in IT Act, 2000, IT Rules, 2021, Indian Penal Code, 1860 and other applicable laws, as per the rule 7 of the IT Rules, 2021”.

“The Government has also established Grievance Appellate Committees under the IT Rules, 2021 to allow users and victims to appeal online on www.gac.gov.in against decisions taken by the Grievance Officers of intermediaries in case they are dissatisfied with the decision of the Grievance Officer,” the Minister informed.

India is mulling regulation to tame the spread of deepfakes and other user harm that AI can bring along. “The policies of the government are aimed at ensuring an open, safe and trusted and accountable Internet for its users. The government is cognisant of the benefits as well as risks associated with new and evolving technologies including AI which has immense potential to revolutionise various fields, but it also poses certain challenges and risks. The same technology of the AI may generate misinformation through deepfakes,” he added.

  • Apple joins AI race with releasing model framework for its silicon chips

As artificial intelligence (AI) takes centre-stage across companies, Apple’s machine learning research team has released frameworks and model libraries designed to run on its silicon chips.

The company released MLX, a machine learning framework designed for efficient and flexible machine learning on Apple silicon.

“The design of MLX is inspired by frameworks like PyTorch, Jax, and ArrayFire. A noteable difference from these frameworks and MLX is the unified memory model,” according to Apple on GitHub.

“Arrays in MLX live in shared memory. Operations on MLX arrays can be performed on any of the supported device types without performing data copies. Currently supported device types are the CPU and GPU,” the Apple ML research team added.

Awni Hannun of Apple’s ML team posted on X that just in time for the holidays, “we are releasing some new software from Apple machine learning research”.

“MLX is an efficient machine learning framework specifically designed for Apple silicon (i.e. your laptop!),” Hannun said.

MLX is a NumPy-like array framework designed for efficient and flexible machine learning on Apple silicon.

“The Python API closely follows NumPy with a few exceptions. MLX also has a fully featured C++ API which closely follows the Python API,” according to the Apple ML team.

Last month, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that the company is investing quite a bit in AI and will do it responsibly for product enhancements over time.

Cook said that the company views AI and machine learning as fundamental technologies and they’re integral to virtually every product that they ship.

“When we shipped iOS 17, it had features like Personal Voice and Live Voicemail. AI is at the heart of these features. And then, you can go all the way to the life-saving features on the launch end of the phone like fall detection, crash detection, ECG on the watch. These would not be possible without AI,” he told analysts during the company’s earnings call.

Cook said that Apple has work going on related to AI for quite some time.

“I’m not going to get into details about what it is, because we really don’t do that. But you can bet that we’re investing, we’re investing quite a bit, we’re going to do it responsibly and you will see product advancements over time,” the Apple CEO said.

In August, Cook said the tech giant has been working on generative AI and other models for years.
