India is not competing with OpenAI’s Sam Altman or xAI owner Elon Musk in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) but aims to build AI use cases to transform the lives of its citizens and curb user harm, Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Wednesday.

Speaking at the Global Technology Summit organised by the Ministry of External Affairs and Carnegie India, the minister said that the government is formulating a comprehensive strategy on AI to build real-life use cases, as it works with several countries to develop guardrails around AI.

“Our goal is not to compete with Sam Altman or Elon Musk or win the next Nobel Prize, but to transform the lives of people with use cases. AI will be used to build capabilities in real-life use cases,” he said at the event.

“AI will play a very important role in agriculture, healthcare, security, language translation and inclusion,” the minister noted.

According to Chandrasekhar, the world is aligning with India’s stand to ensure safety and trust regarding the AI.

A global summit on India AI will be held in January, 2024 and focus would be AI-related talent, computing, chips, large language models and foundation models.

AI is the biggest and most impactful invention in recent times and it can transform healthcare, agriculture, governance, language translation and inclusion, he added.

  • Crackdown on deepfakes: Centre to issue advisories to social media firms for 100% compliance

Deepfakes: Centre to issue advisories to social media firms for 100% compliance

Deepfakes: Centre to issue advisories to social media firms for 100% complianceIANS

The IT Ministry will issue advisories to social media intermediaries in the next two days on ensuring 100 per cent compliance on tackling deepfakes and spread of misinformation on their respective platforms, Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Tuesday.

During the second ‘Digital India Dialogues’ meeting on misinformation and deepfakes with social media intermediaries, the minister reviewed the progress made since the meeting on November 24, when the Centre had given a seven-day deadline to platforms to tweak their policies as per Indian regulations in order to address the spread of deepfakes.

“Many platforms are responding to the decisions taken last month and advisories on ensuring 100 per cent compliance will be issued in the next two days,” said the minister.

“A new amended #ITRules to further ensure compliance of platforms, and safety and trust of #DigitalNagriks is actively under consideration,” Chandrasekhar added.

Deepfakes could be subject to action under the current IT Rules, particularly Rule 3(1)(b), which mandates the removal of 12 types of content within 24 hours of receiving user complaints.

The government will also take action of 100 per cent of such violations under the IT Rules in the future.

“The intermediaries are further mandated to remove such content within 24 hours upon receiving a report from either a user or government authority. Failure to comply with this requirement invokes Rule 7, which empowers aggrieved individuals to take platforms to court under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC),” the minister said.

“For those who find themselves impacted by deepfakes, I strongly encourage you to file First Information Reports (FIRs) at your nearest police station,” said Chandrasekhar, adding that the IT Ministry will help aggrieved users in filing FIRs in relation to deepfakes.

India is mulling regulation to tame the spread of deepfakes and other user harm that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can bring along.

The Delhi High Court on Monday sought Central government’s response in a PIL regarding the absence of regulations for AI and deepfake technologies in the country.

As the Indian government takes a tough stand on AI-generated fake content, especially deepfakes, Google said late last month the company’s collaboration with the Indian government for a multi-stakeholder discussion aligns with its commitment to addressing this challenge together and ensures a responsible approach to AI.

  • Byju’s pays remaining employees’ salaries for Nov after ‘technical glitch’

    Byju Raveendran, Founder Byju

Over the years the company has witnessed a remarkable success and growth with its valuation touching almost $6 billion in just seven years.

Edtech major Byju’s has paid November salaries of some of its employees after a “technical glitch” hampered the payment of some 1,000 workers.

Sources told IANS on Monday that the company paid salaries to the remaining employees on Monday. When reached, Byju’s did not officially comment. In an earlier statement, the company had said it was working to resolve the issue and pay the remaining employees.

“We have noticed a delay in processing salary for some limited employees (less than 5 per cent) due to an unexpected technical glitch. The issue is being rectified over the weekend and payment will be processed by Monday,” said a Byju’s spokesperson.

The salary delay for about 1,000 employees appears to have affected people across levels. However, employees affiliated with Akash Institute have not been impacted.

Days after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) issued show-cause notice to edtech firm Think and Learn Private Limited (parent company of Byju’s), and Byju Raveendran over alleged violation to the tune of Rs 9,362.35 crore, the company last week said it will continue to maintain complete adherence to all relevant FEMA regulations.

A BYJU spokesperson said: “We are in receipt of the notice from the ED which now definitively concluded their investigation and the same has been stated in their press release dated November 21.”

The BYJU official said that the queries received in the notice are solely technical in nature such as delay in filing Annual Performance Reports (APRs) with respect to duly compliant ODI investments of close to Rs 8,000 crore that arose from the delayed statutory audit (FY22).

“The company has, however, filed requisite intimation contemporaneously for all FDI which is received in accordance with the eligibility criteria in law and not affected by the alleged non-filing of APR. The company has also issued or allotted shares within the prescribed time against the FDI so received,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson had said that this is being clarified to dispel any misgivings about wrong doing in relation to receipt of FDI or allotment of shares.

Reacting to a query, the Minister said that the Bengaluru Tech Summit is not conducted for the BJP and he aspires to strengthen the position of IT city Bengaluru at the global level.

Kharge added that the guarantee schemes are in no way coming in the way of providing infrastructure to IT companies and ensuring development. The economic crisis is created by the pathetic economic policy of the Central government, he said.

“We are yet to receive the GST balance. Karnataka is getting Rs 18 for every Rs 100 given to the Union government, whereas north Indian states like Uttar Pradesh are getting Rs 120 and Rs 180. The Karnataka BJP unit must clarify whether they want guarantee schemes or not,” he added.
