Motorcycle ‘planted’ in road accident case for insurance claim from ICICI Lombard

In an uncommon incident, a motorcycle was falsely “inserted” into a road‑accident claim in Assam in order to obtain insurance money from ICICI Lombard General Insurance.

The insurer reports that a Special Investigation Team (SIT), which examined a 2015 accident case to illicitly claim benefits from ICICI Lombard, has uncovered the insertion of the motorcycle.

ICICI Lombard carried out a thorough review of a motor‑vehicle accident case from Bongaigaon, Assam, that occurred in 2015. The case centred on an alleged collision between a motorcycle and a bicycle.

Doubting the accuracy of the details, the insurance firm launched an extensive on‑site verification. The turning point arrived when the company retrieved the relevant Police General Diary Entries (GDE) via an RTI request.

Cross‑checking the official records showed that the vehicle covered by ICICI Lombard had been substituted for the motorcycle that actually participated in the crash.

ICICI Lombard approached the Guwahati High Court to present the fraud evidence and referred the matter directly to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam, which was formed following the Supreme Court’s directive in the Safiq Ahmad versus ICICI Lombard GIC case.

The investigation team identified clear inconsistencies between the vehicle registration number recorded in the initial Police General Diary Entry and the registration number appearing in the later FIR, confirming that the insured motorcycle had been fabricated into the incident to fraudulently obtain compensation by tampering with accident records.
