2 min read

Indian stock markets concluded the last trading session of the year with notable gains, driven by widespread buying activity across major sectors, though information technology shares continued to face downward pressure.
Closing figures showed the Sensex rising 545.52 points (0.64%) to settle at 85,220.6, while the Nifty climbed 190.75 points (0.74%) to finish at 26,129.6. Market experts emphasized that maintaining levels above 26,000 remains critical for continuing the current upward trajectory, keeping the potential retest of the all-time high of 26,320 in play.
“A clear break above the 26,200–26,230 resistance zone may pave the way for accelerated momentum toward 26,300–26,500 levels,” market strategists noted.
The Nifty recorded its tenth straight annual gain with a 10.5% increase during 2025, while the Sensex registered a robust 9.06% yearly advance.
Several blue-chip stocks witnessed strong demand on the BSE, with Tata Steel, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Titan, and Axis Bank emerging as prominent gainers. Conversely, technology majors like TCS, Tech Mahindra, and Infosys faced selling pressure, alongside declines in Bajaj Finance, Sun Pharma, and ICICI Bank.
Broader market indices outperformed benchmark gauges during the session. The Nifty MidCap 100 index climbed 0.95%, while the Nifty SmallCap 100 index advanced 1.11%. For the full year 2025, the MidCap index extended its winning streak to six consecutive years with a 5.7% gain, while the SmallCap index declined 5.6%, halting its two-year rally.
Across sectors, market performance was broadly positive. Except for the Nifty IT index, which dipped 0.3%, all sectoral indices closed with gains. The Nifty Oil and Gas index led sectoral advances with a 2.66% jump. Significant buying activity was observed in banking, realty, metal, consumer durables, media, and chemical stocks, with each sector climbing over 1% by session close.
Market participants noted that the strong finish reflected optimistic investor sentiment as domestic markets wrapped up the annual trading period on a positive note.
