Indian equity benchmarks closed with mixed results on Tuesday, as declines in information technology shares offset gains in financial, FMCG, and metal stocks.
Market sentiment remained subdued ahead of the weekly expiry of Nifty derivatives contracts.
The Sensex halted its two-day rally, dipping 0.05% to close at 85,524.84.
The Nifty, however, extended gains for a third consecutive session, rising marginally by 0.02% (4.75 points) to finish at 26,177.15.
Technical analysts observed strong support for the Nifty in the 26,000–26,100 range, suggesting the index could maintain its upward momentum if it holds above this level.
On the Bombay Stock Exchange, ITC, UltraTech Cement, and Tata Steel led gains amid buying interest in FMCG and metal sectors.
Conversely, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, and Bharti Airtel weighed heavily on the index as top decliners.
The National Stock Exchange mirrored this trend, with Coal India, Shriram Finance, and ITC among notable gainers, while Infosys and Bharti Airtel limited broader advances.
Broader indices showed divergence: The Nifty SmallCap 100 rose 0.37%, while the MidCap 100 ended flat.
Sectorally, IT stocks dragged markets down with a 0.80% sectoral decline, while media shares surged 0.84%. Metal and FMCG sectors also contributed positively, cushioning broader losses.
The Indian rupee traded flat for the second consecutive session, with year-end portfolio adjustments balancing early weakness.
Currency analysts noted the USDINR pair may consolidate between 89.10 and 90.30, requiring a break below 89 to signal trend reversal.
