Government Revises Onion Procurement Price to Rs.1,650 per Quintal to Support Farmers

New Delhi: To bolster onion procurement and improve farmer incomes, the government has updated the Minimum Assured Procurement Price (MAPP) for storable onions to ₹1,650 per quintal, effective from June 13, 2026.

The decision emerged after a review meeting led by officials from the Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA), which centred on refining procurement processes and protecting farmer interests under current market conditions.

Officials said the new procurement price reflects prevailing mandi rates and quality standards for onions earmarked for storage. The rise should give farmers stronger price confidence and aid the government’s goal of keeping sufficient buffer stocks.

Besides adjusting the MAPP, the government has updated its pricing approach to better respond to market shifts. The revised framework aims to streamline procurement decisions and guarantee farmers fair pay aligned with market conditions.

This step highlights the government’s dedication to bolstering agricultural marketing, stabilizing onion availability, and enhancing farmer income security. As a key horticultural commodity in India, onion procurement helps balance farmer welfare with consumer needs.

Officials noted that the updated procurement process will facilitate timely buying, promote price stability, and strengthen the resilience of the agricultural supply chain.
